Seymour Duncan Pickup question................

I have two Seymour Duncan pickups laying around that I'm thinking about putting in a Les Paul copy I'm getting in a trade,,,,, One has a sticker on it that says, "59 NJ the other has one that says "59 JB", is this a "set" and is the "JB" for the bridge position and the "NJ" for the neck position?

"59 JB" or "59 BJ"?

It sounds like the pups are the older type (pre ROHS sticker). If i understand it correctly, the 1st 2 characters are the model (in this case, both are '59s), the third character is the position (N for neck and B for bridge), and the last character is the initial of the builder or tester.

So, the "59 NJ" makes sense as a 59 for the neck. But "59 BJ" would make more sense than "59 JB".

A pic might help, if you can.

I may have written the letters backwards, I'll check when I can, and I take a picture of them as well and post it.........thanks for the reply.

I can't believe I did that,,,,,, Yes I wrote the letters backwards. It is "59 NJ" and "59 BJ". Are both ends of each supposed to have the black tape or is one end taped the way they come? I was told these came out of a mid 90's FM Special.

The tape is fine. Some of the older ones were taped individually on the coils, and then taped like you see. Not all are that way, but some definitely were... I have an old 59n from before the winders put their initials on them that is taped the same way. I have a number of other pups labeled like yours that have the tape go all the way around. So, it varies.

But back to yer original question - yes, the 59 n is the neck pup and the 59 b is the bridge pup. Both wound by the same person. :) Look to be in great shape as well. I personally like the old 59's quite a bit. I've been told the newer ones are all built the same, etc, but all the sets i've liked are the older pups. Maybe i just happened across a few oddball old ones that i happened to like, who knows...

Anyway, hope that helps.

The tape is the real deal NOS black paper from 1959... every '59 is supposed to get a bit of it.

All '59s are wound on Seth Lover's old Leesona winder too.

It's just one of those classy touches that Seymour uses to stay connected with the legends of the past.
