Best thing you've gotten from an HFCer
thecajunboy replied to MCChris's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I'll go with the friendship and help thing. That's the coolest I've gotten from here. I can learn so much about so many things here. And you crazy bastards will eat anything I put out there for you. Even the lizardsnot meatpies we brought to HFC Open House in 04. I'm lucky enough to have a brother and close friend within easy driving distance that play here too. That's cool. In a material way, I'd say the coolest was being a guest at the 1st not-so-annual Poe-Palooza, where we enjoyed free luxury acommodations, a trip to LeMoyne to meet Greg and some other fine folks from here, jam with the Nightwolf, and also a free pass to a beer tasting in Pittsburgh where we got to see a young girl hurl in a taxi cab. Hell, Poe even let me sleep upstairs where I was able to pee outta da window. Actually the only thing uncool about that trip was the sneaky bastard that had to defile the bathroom and subsequently the entire cabin on that flying wiener me and Jeffro had to ride in to get up there. -
Guitar Center having another sale.
thecajunboy replied to Submariner85's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I'm half and half on Guitar Center. For new stuff, they can keep it. I'm not interested in much. Used stuff. I hit every big sale they have and pass through whenever I can, just to look at the used stuff. It's usually priced stoopid high, but sometimes it's stoopid cheap. My Hamer Eclipse came from there for $199. I bought it the same day that a 4 digit Standard had sold about an hour earlier for $199 as well. I grabbed a Marshall combo that sells used for $650 any day for $225, and all I had to do was change the fuseholder. For the good deals you have to be vigilant and patient. -

Well finally after 15 long days, my son and I are back together after Katrina hit. Bubba (one of his many nicknames) had gone off with his mother for the weekend when Katrina decided to turn for the LA MS coast. I got a call from her on the Saturday before and was assured that he'd be safe and not to worry. For some dumbass reason I believed her. Normally she heads for Bay St. Louis with him on the weekends she gets him. Fast forward and the hurricane passes. Two and a half days later I get a text message from her brother and I read that Bubba and her are okay, and are heading for Jackson MS. I get a call the next morning from her and she tells me that they're okay, without power, and will be okay for awhile. Now keep in mind that at this point, this is all the information I was given. A few more days pass and I'm trying to get in touch with her and all I've got is a cell phone number. With the help of some HFCers and Hamer Museum folks, we're bombing the number with voice and text messages, all to no avail. On Saturday (or Day 6) she leaves a phone message that they have electricity, but no fuel. She doesn't leave a call back number. The cell phone barrage continues. I also fill 8 5 gallon cans with fuel to head up there and fetch Bubba and get her some gas to get back down this way. On Day 10 I finally get a land line number from her sister to call. I get a hold of her and find out that her car was flooded. I also find out that they weathered the storm in Gulfport, in a place where some dude said "We shouldn't get any water here". Oh yeah, that cell phone had gone for a swim, and all our calls were for naught. That night I couldn't nail down a firm plan to go get him so I hung up with plans to call again the next night. So it's Day 11 and I call back, and she's himming and hawing about where to meet and it sounded as if she didn't want me to meet her at the home she was staying in. Finally I just had to tell her that I was coming there and to have the boy ready. Day 12 and I race up to Jackson, find the place, and all is well. We start heading back. My son tells me what happened. I'll just list it in bullet form. Water came up to the windows of the house, fast. Had to use ax to hack their way out of house. Tried to get into boat, no luck. Walked through water about 4 1/2 feet deep. Wind was blowing like a mofo. Had to toss the kids over a fence during all this. Made it to another house where the water was just covering the floor. Spent two days with some other folks before heading to Jackson. Her car had gone completely underwater. In short, she could have easily gotten themselves dead. Good news is that Bubba's okay, and back in school. He's been somewhat eager to talk about it, and I don't think he's been affected greatly, at least not yet. Somebody tell me why I shouldn't bitchslap her off the planet.

Once again y'all, Thanks for all the help and kind thoughts. Austin hasn't lost anything here, where he spends most of his time. He may have lost some things that he has at his mother's place. Anything he needs, I can cover the cost of, besides, it might make Christmas shopping a little easier. Not that I wouldn't appreciate anything you guys would offer, but please don't try and pass the hat or anything like that. I'd much rather y'all pray for those in desperate need or donate money to help them out. Lord knows they need it many, many times more than me or Austin.

Just received a text message from my ex's brother. Austin (my son) is okay. They're making their way back toward Jackson Mississippi. Thanks guys, for all your thoughts, prayers, and help

Thanks for the quick replies. I've (we've) got a handful of HFCers ringing the number, but the circuits are all busy, same as from here. Gonna sit tight and wait.

I could use some help. This past weekend my son went off with his mother (we're divorced) to Bay St.Louis, Mississippi. I went fishing in Lake Ponchartrain Saturday morning only to return to evacuation orders. I spoke with my ex around noon, and I was set to go and retrieve him where ever he was , but she assured me that they would take care of themselves and she would make sure he was okay throughout the duration. I don't think either of us really thought it would turn out this bad, and assumed I could get him back a day or two after. Cell service is sucking eggs right now, and I can't dial long distance from my house. Consequently, I have no clue if they are okay, or their whereabouts. I don't even know if they evacuated. All I have is her cell number, and I can't get through. I'm trying to keep positive about this, but as time wears on, my worry level continues to rise. I'm not sure if I should post the phone number here, so please e-mail me for the contact info and offer any other advice you may have, here in this thread. Thanks in advance,

Polically active bands...whatcha think?
thecajunboy replied to Brownsound's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
lemme guess A you're a lousy singer B you're a good singer, but you're guitar playing is even better C As a young kid you ate some deep fried white spotted owl and got a neckbone lodged in your throat and severed a vocal cord, permanently rendering you as a terrible singer. I'm going with B. -

Bill, Yeah, we've probably got differing views, and I have no doubt that you and others like you truly love America, and you guys speak up in an effort to make things the way you think they should be, for a better America. I've just got a problem with turdlickers like Greenday, who likely don't know jackshit about what's really going on put controversial material out there just to sell records. -

Bill, I'm not so sure I can agree fully with what you've said. True, that dissent got us here, but note that the dissent was with the early settler's countries, so they came here. In that same thought pattern, those that really hate America should leave and find a better place. -
October Festivities.....
thecajunboy replied to Hamer Bass Head's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I'd really love to, but I'd likely hold out for an HFC next year. Plane fare ain't my favorite thing to spend money on. This will also give me the chance to head to Arlington in October and not crowd the schedule up too much. -
Make mine with an F hole.

I'm in for 3, and I'd be interested in a white offering.

So what's up with the back? Looks like the grain filler is almost white, or is that just the camera angle doing that? -
Mojo appreciated for Tres Aard...

Yeah Tres, hurry up and get better. -
Acoustic Axis, anybody? Indoor Storm?
thecajunboy replied to Pieman's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Yup, Eddie is certainly on a very short list titled "Best guitar salesmen". What made the experience on the G&L even better was that they were doing 50% off deals at the time. Making minimum profit with maximum customer service. I would not hesitate for a second to buy from them. -
Well, the morning started a little scary....
thecajunboy replied to BCR Greg's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
A long time ago, in a galaxy dar, far away, I awoke in the middle of the night with some nasal drip that had me coughing like a madman because of the tickling in the back of the throat. I decided to get up and try gargling with some Listerine in the hopes of getting some relief. Not unlike some of you other dingbats, I mistakenly grabbed a bottle of Mr. Clean. Gargle with that shit at 2 AM eh? Fun fun fun. Then there was the time I was cleaning an old amp's tolex with ammonia. Straight ammonia works damned good for this too. I was in the process of putting the bottle down when it happened. The top wasn't on the bottle, and I bent over (golf-style) with the bottle gripped by my thumb and forefinger. When the bottle was about an inch or so from the ground it slipped and proceeded to the floor. I happened to be looking straight at it when the stream of ammonia decided to jump right up out of the bottle and into my eye. This was followed by the half blind dash out of the garage to the hose pipe outside. I flushed for a good twenty minutes and ended up in the emergency room the next morning. Some creams and whatnot type of crap for my eye from the eye doctor get it all cleared up. -
I haven't spoken to Ted. I did Paypal him some money so I could get in that Outer Orbit thingy though.

eBay: which part of the word "Auction"...
thecajunboy replied to darc's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
This is why I include a standard disclaimer that I do not end auctions early, reveal the reserve price, or sell "off the bay", and that any e-mail with those requests will not be answered. I usually don't get much of those e-mails, and when I do, it's shitcan time. -
I'd take the neck off and buff it with 0000 steel wool. It'll polish up the frets nicely and more than likely dig out most of the crud. I'd stay away from the naptha and andy solvents, as they might affect the finish on the back of the neck if it gets there. If it's really cruddy, I'd still do teh steel wool trick, but I'd soak it first with Gerlitz Guitar Honey, or some other fingerboard product meant for oiling them. These are safe for the finishes and provide lubrication and a medium to transfer the grime from the wood to the rag that you'll keep wiping it up with as you go. Now of course you've got some differing opinions here, so you'll have to sort through them and see what you feel most comfortable with and what makes the most sense. As for linseed oil, Dan Erlewine recommends it, but not for cleaning. And he only recommends a specific kind, of which I can't recall, and it's not the one you get from Joe the Nimrod down at Home Depot. I've even steam cleaned a board once. It was on a '66 Jazz Bass that I hade picked up and needed to pull the block inlays out of to do some repair work. I used a household iron to produce the steam and as I was going I noticed how well it dissolved years of somebody else's finger grot. I did the entire board and oiled it afterward. It was a thing of beauty. Good Luck

There is absolutely no doubt why I like that guitar Lou. Nice!
