I first met Eddie in 1984 or 85. He was a dick, and I was crushed. Thankfully, Valerie was a blast to be around, and I hung with her. This was at the NAMM summer show in Chicago. The next year, I hung with Val again and we had lots of fun watching the throng line up to get autographs and give Eddie gifts. I have had the occasion to spend time with Eddie several times since then, backstage at shows and at various functions. Dave's an asshole, but you expect that. You don't expect Eddie to be such a tool. He's a bigger egomaniac than anyone that I've ever met, but isn't as obvious about it. Hell, even Yngwie's cooler than Ed. In Eddie's defense, he was the biggest, baddest, most influential guitarist since Hendrix, and he watched the world turn it's back on him. As a fellow alcoholic, I cannot imagine how I would have handled the stresses that he was dealt. He did make a mockery of Gary Cherone, and there was no reason for how that was handled. Gary's vocals were buried on the CD. Bottom line, Eddie's become a sad monument to a bygone era, and his inability to put grudges aside for the fans will be his biggest failing.
