  1. veatch is correct on the different body sizes. I, personally, like the slightly bigger body on the Newport, over an LP. Another thing to consider, with a Newport, is its weight. The spruce topped Newport is nice and light although, I can't comment on a maple topped one as I've never had the chance to play one, yet... The Newport is much lighter than almost any LP and it's also a bit lighter than any 335 I've owned, thus, making it easy on one's back when played for extended sessions.
  2. Thanks Hbom for the heads-up on the BE maple Newport on Reverb. It ticked most of the boxes for me as it had a nice full '59 neck profile and that really nice birds eye top.... Unfortunately, by the time I saw your message and asked the seller for some specific details, it had sold..... So, I will continue my quest.... Thanks again.
  3. Bump # 9... Here's a update that might be of interest to some of you who have chimed in on my quest for a maple topped Newport Pro. I, through my search for the guitar, came across the fellow who acquired the Newport that burningyen mentioned in his post. The guitar that pirateflynn once owned ended up here in the NW. The guy has since passed it along to someone else and from there, well, who knows.... Anyway, I just thought I'd pass along the history of that particular Newport Pro.... Here's a photo of the guitar and so, if anyone here might know its current location, maybe you could reach out as it is almost exactly what I had in my mind... Thanks again, Tim.
  4. Just back from a short get-a-way.... I'm still looking. Bump #8
  5. Thanks Teh.... And the search continues... Bump #7...
  6. Thanks Teh, You are the 1st one to reach out confirming my belief that there might be a few of them out there either hiding away somewhere or being played and appreciated. I will send you a message for more details although, with these big hands, I have to say that a bigger neck profile has always been my go to shape. Thanks again, Tim.
  7. Thanks Geoff, Does anyone know how many of the maple top Newports were built? As far as my quest goes, you never know, maybe someone who has one of these might read this post and decide that they might just want to part with theirs..... I'll probably keep this thread going for a while to see if I can come across one. I really do like my spruce Newport Pro, especially after adding the second vol & tone pots, and would like to add a maple Newport to the mix... Sometimes patience pays off and sometimes it doesn't but... Thanks again, Tim.
  8. Bump #5. Birdseye maple, 1 11/16" nut width, '59 neck profile, nickel hardware..... Is this too much to ask for? Thanks again.
  9. velorush, Thanks for sharing this video... A great way to start my day out here on the west coast.....
  10. Bump #2. Thanks for those of you who have posted in regards to my search. Some of the finer details I would like are: A nut width of a full 1 11/16". A full 50's neck profile. Having the tailpiece in the Gibson, traditional location would be a real plus as I just think that it looks "correct" although, I realize that they may have built only the one referred to in burningyen's post. Thanks again and the quest continues..... Have a good weekend.
  11. Thanks for the information on the various models of the Newport Pro.... I will make a few changes to the word description in my post. Thanks also to Camstone as "a picture is worth a thousand words"... That guitar has the features that I'm looking for.
  12. Hello, I would like to find a Newport Pro with either flame or birdseye maple top instead of a spruce top. I already have a really nice Newport Pro with the spruce top and have attached a couple of photos of that guitar. So, if anyone here on the HFC has one tucked away and might be considering parting with it, I would appreciate it if you would reach out to me.... Thanks in advance and thanks also to Gabe who pointed out some misconceptions, of the different models, on my part... Tim.
  13. draelyc,

I did the upgrade myself and it wasn't too technical.

My biggest concern before taking a deep breath and drilling the two holes was making sure they were reasonably far away from the original holes,  not so close to the side that the pots would touch, fairly even to the f-holes and that, when I was done, they looked "original"....

I built myself a plastic layout board (jig) that I could mount the pots and the switch to for soldering....

The layout was based on the three existing holes in the top.

In other words, after removing the volume and tone knobs, I laid the jig over the shafts of the 2 pots and the switch thus locating the 2 new holes to be drilled.

There was plenty of room through the bridge pickup cavity to feed the harness through....

It actually went smoothly with no big issues.

I would think that, since I had no big issues doing this "mod", any good  guitar tech wouldn't have any problem.

I still have the plastic template if you'd like me to get a copy of it to you....

Being a fan of separate vol and tone controls for each pickup, I have never understood why some builders (Hamer & PRS amongst others) give you only one vol and tone pot for two pickups.....

I really like the way it turned out.....

    Tim.

That sounds awesome!  And yes, I'd definitely be interested in the template, if there's a way to share it.  I don't mind the single volume control on my Mirage, since it's laid out more like a Strat anyway.  But I love the two vol. controls on my Studio and was a bit surprised that the otherwise very traditional hollowbody Newport just had the single controls. 🤷‍♀️

Sorry it took me a while to write back ~ didn't see the notification.

      Thanks!

      Christopher
