covers that are way better than the originals
edgar_allan_poe replied to DaveL's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Blinded by the Light by Manford Mann (Sp?) The Bruce Springsteen original sounds *nothing* like it. It is really the only cover I can think of that became the property of the covering band. Most people don't even know Bruce did that song. Molly Hatchets cover of Dreams by the Allmans is spectacular. Judas Priests cover of Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez is friggin epic when Ripper Owens does it. -
I have one and have zero idea what you are talking about. I also have a Huber wraptail and both are fantastic bridges. This guitar is friggin fantastic sounding.

Decided to share pics of my amp rig...

I'll bet your significant other *loves* you. -
Avoid.

Before you assess them give your ears time to adjust. If you have been using the Chinese stuff for a long time, then your ears are used to a certain tone and it takes a little time to properly assess the differences. This is actually something I hear quite often. What you may be hearing as "stiff" could actually be a by-product of your noise floor dropping. if you give it some time, you may find out that your amp has never sounded or responded better. It is also very possible that this particular tube doesn't play well in the circuit of your amp. I have a set of absolutely sweet NOS smooth plate Telefunkens that for some reason sound like shit in my Fargen Bordeaux. the NOS Mullards I have are only *slightly* better. But when I put some NOS Sylvanias...WHOAH!!! Jackpot! The point is....you just never know, but you do need to give it some time before you make a decision either way.

Any new Hamers in the works?

That will be sick. -
Here is a small photo and a commentary on the issue. Warning for language... http://www.drawerb.com/2007/08/14/eddie-va...ionist-history/

I can't believe you guys didn't hear about that. Evidently when VH got back together to do the last tour, they had the VHI picture up on their web page and Wolfgang was there instead of MA> The fans went ballistic and VH pulled it and said it was a joke. Most were not amused.
-
Hey don't get me wrong...I agree with you guys. Unfortunately that vast majority do not. The shit they pulled with putting Wolfgang on the cover of VHI was/is TOTAL bullshit of the highest order.
-
Understood, but how many of those backup vocal notes can you hit?
-
Exactly my point. How ill it be missing if it is there...even if it is done through harmonizers or tapes.
-
No doubt, but I can think of anyone who goes to see VH just for the bass player. People go see VH for Dave and Eddie.
-
Disagree. VH will always be about Roth and Eddie. I don't discount his contributions, especially when it comes to singing, but come on.

While I don't like the album at all, I am one of the few who don't blame Cherone for that debacle. I don't believe for one second that he had any input into those tunes. My guess is that they were mostly already done before Sammy left and they tried to make Cherone sing the songs the way Sammy would have. It is the only thing that makes any sense. If you follow Cherones career he never sounded anything like that or even phrased any of his lines like he did on that album. Sorry but IMHO the debacle that was VH3 is solely on the shoulders of the VH bros.

Thank you sensei. In power sections you will only hear a difference if can get the amp loud anough to clip the power tubes. I run NOS power tubes more for the reliability than the tone, although I have to say that the tone of the NOS 6550s I have in the Elmwood is absolutely stunning. Preamp they can make a very large difference. *Especially* in that in between gritty medium gain tone. Mind you, they wont make a Twin into a Plexi or vice versa so the main factor in the tone of an amp will always come mainly from its design and not the tubes. But different tubes will give you very different flavors. Think of it as the difference between cheap artificial vanilla ice cream and a good pint of home made authentic vanilla bean ice cream. What it won't do is give you chocolate.

The old Seimens and Teslas are still heads and shoulders above the Winged C's. No comparison IMHO. I currently have a small stash of Mullards, telefunken, Amperex, Sylvania, and Tesla 12ax7s. The Teslas are what are in my amp currently. I have an Elmwood Modena 90 and it just seems to me that those Teslas make that amp roar. Not as refined as the Mullard or Teles and that works perfectly in this type of high gain amp. The Sylvanias have such a wicked bottom end and the Elmwood has such a HUGE amount of bottom end that it was just too over the top for me. The early Tesla 12ax7s and EL34s are spectacular tubes that cannot be touched by modern versions. IMHO of course.

Yup...whole different tube.

If you look at that thread I actually defend Jol on several occasions. I don't get the idea of it being an "I hate Jol" thread. I have disagreed with him, true...but that does not mean that I don't wish him well. I don't understand why it has to be one way or the other...love him or hate him. Jol is a complicated guy and it would be foolish to just dismiss him. I have stated publicly on several occasions that he deserves a lot of the accolades he gets for his tenure at Hamer. He also deserves most of the criticism leveled at him. Do I wish him ill? Why the hell would I want to do that? I'll also point out that we haven't seen a JD guitar so we have zero idea what it will be. We assume that it will be a solid body guitar ala Hamer. But remember that it was Jol who gave us the Improv. These could very well be archtops and that will change the ballgame completely when it comes to price point. Is a 16-24K archtop out of the question or priced absurdly? I would answer NO on both accounts. I do think that Jol would be hard pressed to get into that genre of guitar given his past association with solid bodies. But as someone has already pointed out...just look at Ken Parker. IIRC his archtops start at 30K. I still don't get all the vitriol on this thread.

That is me on the right...my wife on the left

Not what happened....read my post. Devnor came into the thread calling people a bunch of offensive names knowing full well that his post would incite people ("flame on" at the end of his post). That is against the rules and I called him foolish for it. That is a far cry from him calling people "pricks". Again, his opinion on this matter was never and will never be the issue, his name calling on an obviously heated thread will always be. Had he agreed with me and posted the same thing, my response would have been the same. That type of behavior is foolish and it can/will be cause for a vacation. Any other questions?
