  1. Hi Poe, What was the price range for a Ceriatone amp? Thanks. CeriaTone Thanks veatch. I was lazy on that one.........oh yeah, google. ha ha.
  2. Hi Poe, What was the price range for a Ceriatone amp? Thanks.
  3. That's an awesome one! Love that unique colour.
  4. The sides and back are mahogany. Yes, the First Born is an 18 watter which means there's not too much headroom. I like my crunchy tone right on the end of breakup so I don't use an overdrive. I imagine an overdrive would sound very good but the amp has two channels so you could set one 'kind of clean' and the other 'mostly cranked' with the use of a channel switcher. GREAT amp. Cool! I didn't realize it had two channels. I thought the 18 watters were one channel amps. Sounds like an "update". Wow...........the GAS continues. I don't believe I've seen them in Canada. Would it be similar to a DR. Z 18 watt? I believe it's called 18 Junior or something.
  5. Most Monaco's w/ F holes are 25.5 scale length and Newport's are 24.75. The Monaco's probably have a less hollow design as well. The closest production Newport to mine would be a Newport Pro w/ a maple top. The production version is a great guitar. What are the back and sides made out of? I also have another question, are you still playing your Blockhead First Born? Do you use overdrive/distortion straight from the amp, or in conjunction with a overdrive pedal? What's the clean headroom on an amp like that? I believe it' s 18 Watts, am I correct? Thanks for the info! rob b.
  6. What are the kinds with the F-holes? Are they similar to a Newport, just single cut as opposed to double-cut? Pirateflynn, what is the name of your type of Newport? I know you had some custom stuff, but what would be the closest commercially available Hamer to yours? Not that I'm copying you. ha ha. Trying to snag down a '79 Sunburst right now. GAS is crazy. I am crazy, but it's fun, i got the cash, I'm not hurtin' anyone, no kids............no problems! haha.
  7. Awesome looking one! How does it sound/play? Man.......those older Sunbursts have something to them, there's no doubt.
  8. My first, and only, Hamer, is a 96, or is 97? Anyways, a flamy-top sunburst style Studio Custom that I purchased from a very patient DavidE, he had to put up with some annoyances from paypal, converting Canadian funds to American. Anyways, it got to me safe and sound, DaveE got his $, and I got an awesome guitar. I will never sell it!!!! Pics when I finally get a photobucket account. Rob in Ottawa ps. Stock pickups. Looking for some nice PAF style, if anyone wants to get rid of something nice......Fralins, or WCR, or WB Gregwinds would be my first choice. Hit me a PM if you have some great PAFs that you have to sell.
  9. Bubs, you got the same taste in guitars as me, except more money!! ha ha.
  10. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Nice! That thing is SWEET Sam, that Newport in your profile is pretty damm nice too! I imagine it sounds awesome.
  11. Pirateflynn, that's a great pic! Gettin' him started early eh? Cute.
  12. Cool! I notice that only the low e-string goes through the body. I've never seen that before, is it a common design for basses?
  13. I think the amps look cooler than a lot of guitars I see for some reason. They look pretty natural. I don't really have strong feelings either way on reliced guitars, but I've seen some that are a little too over the top. I've also seen some I like a lot. There, is that wishy-washy Canadian enough for you?! The topic brings up some pretty strong opinions that's for sure! I'm not sure exactly why it touches such a nerve. We guitarists are too sensitive! ha ha.
  14. There's a Canadian band called Priestess getting a lot of attention. They've opened up for Megadeth and some other high profile gigs. They have two albums, the latest one is supposed to be the heavier one. Really cool guitar riffs, and the vocals are the style you are describing, a little bit of a Hetfield style going on. http://www.priestessband.com/site-f.html
  15. The carbon fiber stringed instruments are improving quickly and gaining acceptance. Notice that the reviews in that link mention the Rainsong graphite guitars a lot as well, some of which are also in the desired price range. There is a widely acclaimed graphite classical stringed instrument maker, Luis & Clark. Co-founder Luis is a cellist with the Atlanta Symphony and his instruments have gained wide acceptance from classical musicians, and it's not easy to gain widespread acceptance of differently shaped instruments based on new technology among classical musicians. Cello soloist Yo Yo Ma has a Luis & Clark and endorses it. Also, check out the sound quality on the demonstration videos. These are beautiful sounding instruments by anyone's standard. My brother is thinking of getting one of their cellos. I really hope he does. As I said before, I'd love these guys to make an archtop guitar and an acoustic bass guitar. Oh, btw as long as we're talking graphite, how about Kaman's own Adamas graphite-topped guitars? Isn't that one of the selling points of the Adamas over the Ovation--there is more volume and less dynamic compression with the graphite top? Call me traditional, or maybe close minded, but I don't really want a graphite guitar at this point. Maybe if I had a couple of nice acoustics, I'd try it for something different. For me, anything over a certain price range, I have to love the sound, but I also have to be into the look. Obviously, it's not the most important thing, but I have to admit, it's a consideration.
  16. Some cool suggestions. I'm going to have to wait about a month or two, getting some money for a work backpay thing. Here's one I've seen online that I like. I might get something like this when I do pull the trigger: http://www.12fret.com/used/Rizsanyi010596.jpg George Rizsanyi dreadnought, $1,500 Canadian, about $1,200 American right now I think.
  17. Looks pretty cool. I've never tried them. I think I may go with a smaller builder. You seem to get a lot of value that way. I don't live in Toronto, but it's close enough to go check out. They have a great store, http://www.12fret.com/ They always seem to have a nice selection of well known and off the beaten path guitars. I think I may end up taking a trip out there to try a whole bunch within the same price range to see what's really for me. The have a couple of vintage strats on their page too! Nice stuff, I'm not sure if those prices are good.....way out of my range. ha ha.
  18. My Martin treats me right. I tried a really amazing 60s Martin once. It was great, but a little too mellow, and I ended up getting my present guitar, which to my ears was a little clearer. Martins are kind of like Gibsons too me, so many variations, and "artist specials" that I don't know which ones are good value and which ones are marketing. I think if I were to get a Martin, it would be a used one. Are there any years to avoid? Any years that are particularly a good buy?
  19. Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting a nice acoustic guitar. My price range is within the $1500-2000 range. I already have a nice parlour type guitar, sounds great for finger-picking, and awesome for light strumming, but if you dig in, it doesn't respond super well. I want a nice guitar that I can really dig in to. I guess probably a dreadnought might be my best choice. I'm really leaning towards a Larrivee, I've tried some in the past and really liked them. Plus, they are available in Ottawa. I know a lot of folks on the forum are big on Breedlove's, but I've never seen them in Canada so far. Any ideas of what to look for? Thanks! rob b. p.s. Has anybody ever tried Sunrise Pickups and pre-amps for acoustic? I've heard they are really amazing. From what I understand, Jeff Tweedy from Wilco uses them on some of his acoustics.
  20. I think the problem that a lot of people had with the Pacer was not the "fishbowl" look that it conjured up in one's mind, but the tendency that they had to explode when tapped on the back bumper. They fell out of favor after that realization. Wasn't that the Pinto?Oh yea, that's right - I remember now. The Pacer was just hideous to the point of being deadly, just not literally deadly. LOL! Wasn't it a Pacer in the Wayne's World movie? The part that they're singing Bohemian Raphsody? Weird looking car, that's for sure.
  21. +1. PRS is making enough guitars that some lemons are gonna get through, but to claim that basically every guitar made has no "mojo", whateverthehellthatmeans, is just showing ignorance. I would expect Hamer guitars to be consistently excellent, given that they really are made one at a time and Hamer isn't shooting for over 1000 guitars to be made in a month. Hamer really should be charging more for what they do now. PRS and Hamer are two different types of operations... Hamer is closer to the PRS Private Stock department. Hamer tried the mass manufacturing thing and decided they didn't like it.. kudos to them! What I find interesting in that pic is that rework percentage of 3.07%.... thats pretty damn low for the volume. "mojo", whateverthehellthatmeans" That comment made me laugh. I totally agree. I see it all the time when people are selling guitars. Mojo? WTF? Does it mean a guitar has to be old and beat up to be good? Forget mojo, if it sounds and feels good to play, it's a good guitar.
  22. Ah man, you said it there. They've never been the same. I'm hoping the new album is good though, did you get it?
  23. You'd figure a guy who could afford a '59 Les Paul and that amp could afford to pay a little more for production values on his video! Well he bought the amp new as a "second" for $850, the '59 he bought used when that's all it was...a used guitar..I think he said he paid like $1700 for that. Anyhow, he has had that gear for years when it wasn't a big deal to buy it. Nah, I was just goofing around, wasn't meant to be a personal knock on him. One thing for sure if I had bought the stuff back in the day, it would be really damm hard to keep on to it at what they are worth now. I'd love to have that kinda gear, but you could literally sell those off and buy a house. Only a guitarist would understand why it would be a tough decision: An "old" guitar made in the 50s vs. a House "Normal" people would think we're insane! (or at least me anyway, most of you cats are probably more fiscally responsable than me) edited to add "cats" WTF, for a moment I turned into a 60s jazz fan for some odd reason.
