JGale Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I like the rounded over ends of the V. Makes it appear friendly, less likely to gnaw your flesh. 2 Quote
BTMN Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 (edited) I think there’s room for both companies to make the disputed guitars. There some misidentification by a beginning player but a majority of players know the difference between the brands. Gibber never really lost sales. If you want a real Flying V you get one. Only my soap box opinion. 😎👍🏁 Edited July 9, 2024 by BTMN 3 Quote

cmatthes Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 Okay…maybe I just have a really good eye after staring at these damned things since I was a kid, but does anything about this picture in the article/screengrab below seem funny to anybody else here? Yes indeed. Thats not a real Gibson headstock - that’s clearly a Chibson! I guess I found it ridiculously lame on UG’s part that they can’t tell the difference in the photo for an article about litigation over Gibson copies. (And no, I don’t think they’re that clever) 😂 2 4 Quote

Biz Prof Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I realize there are good Lesters to be found and all, but I personally don't give two shits about ever owning another Gibson guitar. If it takes $8k+ to guarantee a stellar reissue from GCS, why not just get a custom build from someone like Mike? 9 1 Quote

That was actually really interesting. Dean/Armadillo's counsel was far better prepared and coherent, despite not having argued the matter at the prior level. The Gibson attorney came across as a douche, in my opinion, couldn't answer a direct question coherently, and referred to "Lenny Kravitz playing 'Go Your Own Way' with a Gibson Flying V". I don't think anybody has ever seen nor heard Lenny covering that Fleetwood Mac tune. Also, what's a "Flying Explorer"? The judges seemed unconvinced. 3 3 Quote
DarkHammer Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I am all for intellectual rights, but there should be a time limit on the design monopoly. Flying V was introduced in 1958. After 60+ years it should be in public domain and other makers should not be punished for borrowing elements of it. On the other hand, when was last time Gibson came up with something new and worthy? I recall they tried new models in 1970s and 1980s and have not done anything innovative since. They keep milking designs from 1950s, while other companied innovate. Gibson needs to wake up and offer new ideas instead of chasing others in courts. 2 Quote

My impression is it's about the general shapes of things and there are LOTS of US companies that have made LOTS of similarly shaped guitars, both of US and foreign origin. Quote

Phil McKnight bought a Murphy (I think from MooreGuitars) and there were a couple things wrong with it and he sent it back. I'm with you though, my two Gibsons were enough, and they're long gone. In my opinion, the new leadership really only significantly improved the marketing. 1 Quote
