django49 Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 (edited) Posting for a friend in So Cal. This is a guitar that I bought new through Greg Platzer some time back. I sold it to a guy who is quite serious about high end guitars. (Why did I sell? I got another in korina and another with a BRW neck. You know how that goes.....) My buddy is now in need of a bit of downsizing himself. And someone who has done tons of deals in higher end guitars and has shipped all over the world. But I thought I would mention it here, as I know we have some folks that love these. These are incredible guitars. As someone one said, "The voice of the angels". This model is essentially the same as a Dolphin, but has the redwood top over a semihollow body (no f holes). As much as the Dolphin is my long term go to guitar (more than a decade), the Redwood is just a bit sweeter in tone as well as being lightweight. I will come back and update when I get current pictures and an asking price. FWIW, the cheapest used one on Reverb is currently about $6k, with new ones going as high as $13k, though the latter is much more "tricked out". I am sure his price will be very fair. No vested interest, but I know this guitar and am happy to make an introduction to anyone interested. Here are some original pictures showing the one piece top and giving a taste of the figure in the custom ordered fingerboard and headstock. Come to think of it, I should probably sell one or two other model Hubers myself. But for now, I am only wanting to sell locally. 😉 Edited July 21, 2024 by django49 14 Quote
santellavision Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Everything Don said above is true. Hubers are by far, the best guitars I have every played. Simple amazing in every way. (And, I've owed a few - teehee) I ordered my Redwood from Greg too. If this one comes up for a decent price, someone should grab it! 4 Quote

django49 Posted July 23, 2024 Author Posted July 23, 2024 Okay, a bit of an update. He has a target price at around $5k to include shipping. All things considered, that seems very reasonable. Try to find one for less! Update on specs.....Besides the one piece top, a 1959 Hausell bridge pickup, snakewood custom order for the board, headstock overlay and tuners. Hardwood pickup surrounds. Another of Greg's original pictures..... FWIW, Haig has also posted a Ron Thorn Grantura in korina with hard to get GT-90 pickups on TGP. Now if I was in a buying mood...... At risk of stating the obvious, (I think) everyone should try out a Huber someday if they can swing it. I have had about 2 dozen (If I have not lost count). Still have more than half of them. Sold a good number of them here. All pleased buyers, to best of my knowledge. 2 Quote

JGale Posted July 23, 2024 Posted July 23, 2024 (edited) IMHO that is a good price. I sold mine used to a Dentist in Boston for $3500 plus shipping lo those many years ago. Edited July 23, 2024 by JGale 1 Quote
django49 Posted July 24, 2024 Author Posted July 24, 2024 Yes, I was surprised he mentioned that low a price. In fact, I forwarded that to another friend that has bought several great guitars from me, including one Redwood and a really tricked out Dolphin. He was pondering whether he needed a second one. What can I say? It is an addiction. The lightweight and semi-hollow Redwood is something I did not fully appreciate until I plugged one in. Quote
stedge Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 This huber is cool. I went and looked at the green thorn, though, and that is the bees knees. nice guitars. 1 Quote

stedge Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 (edited) Yeah, I am sure it is exquisite. But I like the green one. And, frankly, a Krautster with a wrap and one P90 (2 would be OK, too, but one is just cool). Pelham Blue or just a little bit more gray. No fake wear. Ebony Board. No inlays. There, I said it. My 2 cents worth. If you like green, P90s and the Krautster, at least take a look at the Hartung Junico on Reverb with TWO P90s. The Junico is virtually the same as the Krautster. I had one (more standard HB bridge,. P90 neck set up ) I actually thought it was a better guitar than the Krautster. But when it came down to having to make a choice, I let the Junico go. The Krautster was just more of a flat out rocker and met my need a bit better. (FWIW, I regretted selling---to a member her--and bought it back from him. After a while I then sold it back to the same guy. Neither of us REALLY wanted to let it go. I do not know if he still had it when he passed). The one on Reverb has a cocobolo board rather than ebony. But check it out.....Cocobolo BACK as well and a rosewood neck. That combo may not be for everyone, but I think it would be great. Def worth a look....Appears it has been for sale for awhile. PS....I have had 5 of Ron Thorn's builds, all predating the Fender days. I did let 2 of them go, but have only good things to say about any of them. (Two of them involved trades between Haig and myself). Quote
django49 Posted August 23, 2024 Author Posted August 23, 2024 Sorta surprised. The initial contacts did not yet find a buyer. Anyway, Haig has now listed on Reverb. Quite sure a bit can be saved if contacted directly. A person would be hard pressed to find a better one at this price. Exactly as per my original order. Hubers are never cheap, but as another Don sang...... (FWIW, I have kept two Redwoods. Why did I sell this one? I liked the one with korina body and neck (and other pickups) a wee bit better. The other, is not nearly as nice looking, but does have the solid Brazilian NECK, which makes for an even "bigger" tone, IMO). https://reverb.com/item/84279140-nik-huber-redwood BTW, that D'Pergo he has listed is very appealing.....IF I was back in a buying mode...... https://reverb.com/item/83801415-d-pergo-fft-signature-limited-2021-moss-green-metallic Quote
django49 Posted September 24, 2024 Author Posted September 24, 2024 I gather Haig has made the sale. Someone will be quite pleased. Since a few folks have weighed in on the maker, here is a recent demo that I think is well done. Not directly commented on therein.....Nik got the infamous cease and desist demand from the folks at Gibson re the Orca 59. So that is no longer sold, at least inside the USA. The result is a DOLPHIN 59 which is (sort of) more based on the Tele shape than Les Paul. with a 24.75" scale instead of 25". Hence the comparison between the 2 models. So, in some respects, the Dolphin 59 is a bit more "authentic" than the Orca 59. I am an unrepentant fan boy, so take that into account. A price nearing 5 figures is not for everyone.....And I am def NOT in the market any more. So not for me either. But, WTH, it is fun to hear someone that can do it justice put it thru it's paces..... FWIW, I tend to default to the original Dolphin (or the related Redwood) with the 25.5" scale. Different strokes and all that. 2 Quote
cynic Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Their Orca model took everything about an LP and dialed the sexy up to ten. The Dolphin looks like something they sucked all the sexy out of. 1 2 Quote
django49 Posted October 3, 2024 Author Posted October 3, 2024 Since at least a few folks appreciate Nik's work, this old review might be interesting. I cannot verify the serial number, but this is the same vintage and looks absolutely identical to mine. I am guessing it is actually the guitar that was used in this review. https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/reviews/nik-huber-rietbergen-standard-electric-guitar-review I have had some great semi-hollows, including some vintage Gibsons, a Thorn Grantura, McKay Sunrise, Vaschenko. Not to mention the custom Hamer that was so close to 335 specs. All of them ended up going away, because the Rietbergen was just better (IMHO). Never had a semi-hollow that sounded as "big". I had hoped that I could get Mike to build a Shishkov with similar specs but a few personal tweaks. I know he was enthusiastic, But I guess my window is not open at this point. Anyway, if anyone is looking for a top of the line semi-hollow, and can live with the cost, these are well worth checking out. Mine: (My Prototype is a seriously upgraded version of the same guitar. I think it is the best guitar I have ever played. Also the one I paid the most to get). BTW, got a pop up from Nik today showing off a new variation, that being a 12ver with a trapeze tailpiece and korina body. Very intriguing, but not on my horizon. Likely to be a custom order with commensurate cost..... Quote
Greg G Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 Just saw today Nik is now offering a 12 string Rietbergen model. Quote
