gorch Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 A friend and I went to see Sweet last night. The audience has been in the mood and the band played the pass. For the first time in 40 years, since the album Level Headed, they played the long version of Love Is Like Oxygen. Andy Scott turned 75 this year. He performed fairly well. Of course had they played the long list of hits and a few new ones. A great sing along show though. 12 Quote
princeofdarkness56 Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 I so wish I had seen these guys back in the 70’s. It just never worked out. 3 1 Quote
diablo175 Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 (edited) One of my fave bands in my formative pre-teen and early teen years! I had ALL their hit 45's. Couldn't afford LPs and it was difficult to get funding for LPs past my folks given their general distrust of all things rock n roll that didn't come from with Elvis. Fun fact: the boys in Sweet had an undeniable hard rock edge and butted heads with label because the management wanted more bubblegum radio hits material and they wanted to rock! Probably explains why I really liked the B-sides of their 45s. Medusa, Burn of the Flame, Restless, etc. Edited September 24, 2024 by diablo175 5 1 Quote
Steve Haynie Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Dig in deep and you will find some heavy music in the Sweet catalog. This is NOT SAFE FOR WORK: The live version is even less safe for work. 2 5 Quote

I discovered them with the US version of Desolation Boulevard years after its release and was blown away. Then I started getting their other albums and was surprised to find out so many songs I knew by other bands were originally recorded by the Sweet: No You Don't, Action, AC/DC (the song), Set Me Free, etc. 2 Quote

I saw them at The Coliseum in Long Island NY way back when love is like oxygen came out. Great show back then. I have Kodachrome slides and my ticket somewhere. 4 Quote
BruceM Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 (edited) Ballroom Blitz has been in rotation in the 4-3-2-1 Club recently. Our drummers like to play it. So does everyone else. I always like this Steve Stevens and the Atomic Playboys cover of Action: And the original was fun, too. Edited to add: I want the drummer's t-shirt; looks like it says "13 Hit Wonder" Edited September 25, 2024 by BruceM additional info 8 Quote
Jakeboy Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 I have always loved the Sweet. A huge influence. Quote
BrianM Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Atomic Playboys kicks serious ass. Some great stuff there! My fave Steve Stevens. 3 Quote

This is one of my fave Sweet tunes & SS/AP do a pretty kick ass version. I'm glad they chose the version they did because there was a widely circulated remix version (above) that omitted the Keys/Synth intro I remember from my 45. My previous & current bands cover the album version where one guitar replicates that synth part with some quick tremolo picked 32nd notes and the other chugs on 8th note D power chord. 2 measures later, the synth part switches to the Bb sliding to a D. When it's done tightly, it sounds awesome live. 5 1 Quote

I have never seen Sweet live but was lucky enough to see The Atomic Playboys live once at Toad's place in New Haven CT. 2 Quote
svl Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 I've played FOX ON THE RUN for the past year in my duo. The Sweet deserve way more kudos for their overall influence on the evolution of rock. 7 Quote

gorch Posted September 30, 2024 Author Posted September 30, 2024 The current line up put a new album out the other day I think, certainly not a hit candidate, has some pretty good songs on it. 2 Quote
Saul Goodman Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 I saw them in the '70s. While all their hits were awesome, on that stage that night, Windy City for the win. I don't remember if it was even a hit but that's the tune I remember to this day like I was there. 1 Quote
gorch Posted October 1, 2024 Author Posted October 1, 2024 I think Windy City had been a live favorite, but never had been singled out. It’s one of my favorites too. 2 Quote
