Feynman Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 (edited) My heart - it hurts. Thanks for listening. Edited October 25, 2024 by Feynman 1 13 Quote
Teh Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 Yikes! Cracked the top too?!? Oh, that sucks! On the good side, it looks like it pulled away cleanly. Should be a fairly straightforward repair - cleat the top crack , and install that moustache bridge you've always dreamed of! 2 2 Quote
Steve Haynie Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 What happened to cause that damage? 1 Quote
Feynman Posted October 25, 2024 Author Posted October 25, 2024 (edited) The bridge decided it had enough. The lovely guitar was just sitting there on its stand, and I heard 'creak....POW!' It's a shame that it decided to take the soundboard along with it on the damages. Edited October 25, 2024 by Feynman 2 Quote
G Man Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 It's that time of year, where the humidity goes low and the acoustics go back in their cases with humidipacks for the winter. Sorry to see your guitar succumbed to the dryness. As others have said though, entirely fixable. 5 Quote
hamerhead Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 Well Mr. Dylan, it looks like you need to go electric. ...but that sucks hard, Mitch. I hope you find somebody to make it whole again. 3 Quote
burningyen Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 Better than yours, apparently. Ouch. I agree a near-invisible fix looks doable. 3 Quote
veatch Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 I have no words. That sucks. : ( I hope you can bring 'er back from the dead. Or check with Spicoli. His dad has an ultimate set of tools.... 1 3 Quote
Feynman Posted October 25, 2024 Author Posted October 25, 2024 It will live. It's just sad and I needed to share among friends. This guitar is a bit of a sentimental/special one, so it hurts a bit more than usual. It'll be fine in the end. There are a couple of tricky parts to this particular repair, but nothing too complicated. The builder has kindly offered to make and send a new bridge to me. Hopefully the soundboard crack doesn't need any splinting, as the top has a bit of UV aging that could be tough to match. If just cleats, it should be able to be repaired near invisibly. I know a guy who knows a guy that will keep its provenance intact. I think the universe was just trying to encourage me to keep this guitar forever by making a huge dent in its resale value. That was my plan anyway, but this helps fight future temptation. G Man, I live in a desert, so we don't ever have good seasons. My guitar lives in a nicely sealed temp/humidity monitored case except when it's out for practice sessions. I'm a Boveda man myself - I suspect D'addario is just rebranding these and marking them up a few bucks, but I could also just be making that up. Thanks for all the helpful support. Today is already better than yesterday. I'll be hearing that sound in my dreams for a while though. 10 Quote
DaveH Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 (edited) Sucks, but keep your hopes up. I had been looking at Martin GC's, and finally found one I really loved and bonded with. Sounded great! I start the purchase process, and the sales guy comes back out about 10 min later with bad news: "I can't sell you this guitar. It has a crack in the side board." I looked, and sure enough it did. I begged them to sell it to me, but no chance on a damaged new Martin. I really didn't care, the guitar was that good, but no dice. I know the top is more critical than the side, but maybe it can be repaired to where you won't notice any bad repercussions. Good luck. Edited October 25, 2024 by DaveH 1 Quote
