Disturber Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 I found this one locally for about 600 U$. No case. I still think the price was very reasonable. Frets are good. Neck is straight and it plays very well. The magnets had come loose from under one of the P-bass pickups, (Slammers - Hamer's version of the Dimarzio Model P?). I fixed that without problems. A saddle screw was also stuck but I fixed that too. So altogether it's a 100% working, problem free bass. I am happy. One issue. Someone played around with a soldering iron in the control cavity. I doubt that it is the way it came wired from the factory? I need to clean this up, (my OCD). DOES ANYONE HAVE AN 80'S CRUISE BASS AND WOULD BE SO HELPFUL TO TAKE A PHOTO OF THE CONTROL CAVITY AND POST IT HERE, so I can see how it is supposed to be? I can only find the schematic for the 2nd generation Cruisebass. Also, the p-bass pickup cavity has the numer 478 in it. Any clue to what that means? 12 Quote
mrjamiam Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 Here's mine. I played with a soldering iron too, but I doubt that years-ago-me made any executive decisions to change the scheme. 3 1 Quote

Is it, and the incoming wire, both connected to the third leg of the pot? Quote

Is it, and the incoming wire, both connected to the third leg of the pot? OK, so cap is on the rearmost pot. Looking down on that pot as we are in the picture, the left terminal is empty. The center terminal connects the blue wire coming from the center pot to the blue wire going to the barrel connector. The capacitor itself is bridging the right terminal to ground on the surface of the pot (together with the black wires connecting to the other potentiometer surfaces and the barrel connector plus the green wire connecting the pot surface to the shielding plate). 1 Quote
velorush Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 Imgur is broken this afternoon, so here's a direct upload of my (formerly) '82. IIRC, untouched wiring, but like yours there was a pickup magnet issue. 2 1 Quote

Was that added on later? Quote

I bought it off eBay and changed out the pickups and pots for new stuff, can't remember why at this point. Pretty sure I didn't put the plate in, though. It's an '86. Quote
HSB0531 Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 Ah ok. Hamer might have added plates in the later years. I was thinking that was closer to an 81 or 82 Cruise Bass Quote
velorush Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 (edited) My '81 Special had the plate: The '82 Crusebass (pics) did not, nor did my '82 Phantom. Maybe they occasionally ran out? If any of the three had been monkeyed with I'd say it was the '81 Special. Note the Alpha pots (replaced with later Hamer pots from @BCR Greg). The Phantom was pristine. crunchee Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 BIG time congrats on the snag! US $600 is the new Tree Fitty, perhaps? 4 Quote

It might just be, due to inflation and all. Now I need to find a decent case and a set of fresh strings. Edited November 17, 2024 by Disturber 2 Quote
