Travis Posted February 8 Posted February 8 So, I went and did a thing…. I’ve always loved the look of Les Pauls and god knows how many rock gods and my personal influences have used them over the years. While I do like the bursts, they’re the classic look and what everyone thinks of when “Les Paul” is mentioned, I’ve always been partial to the elegant simplicity of ebony and cream. Classy. Like a tuxedo. I wasn’t planning on buying new. Wanted to try them out first. But, my guy at sweetwater made a close out deal on their old stock (it’s a 2023) and with their 55-pt inspection and 30 day “no hassle” return policy, I took a chance. Well, I must’ve gotten a good one. Cuz, if this isn’t a good one then I can’t imagine how much better a good one could possibly be. Feels great. Plays great. Sounds great. The burst bucker neck pickup may rival my Talladega DD as favorite neck tone ever. It sustains FOR-EV-ER…. Bridge pickup had some good chunk and does well with some rock rhythm a La Zep, Kiss, and AC/DC (I know, wrong Gibson)…. Not a finish flaw on it. Haven’t pulled the cavities yet to check the insides. Maybe at the first string change… 22 Quote
Hackubus Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Congrats! There's hardly anything more \m/ RAWKNROOOOL \m/ than a black Les Paul standard. 1 Quote
RobB Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Beautiful. Gibsons have been so on-point this past decade. Was it a straight online purchase, or did your dude pick it out for you? 2 Quote

Was it a straight online purchase, or did your dude pick it out for you? He emailed me about some close out discounts. I inquired about an open box with a tiny dent they had on their site. Apparently it sold but the website hadn't been updated yet. He offered a deal on a new one. There were 2 left. One was 10 lbs, the other was 9 lbs 10 oz. I told him if they were otherwise identical I preferred a darker rosewood but whichever one had a better acoustic voice would trump the rest. He suggested the 9 lbs 10 oz one so that’s the one I got… 1 Quote
RobB Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Nice. I’m looking forward to submitting an application to Sweetwater when I get ready to retire in a few years. 4 Quote

If only I didn’t live 4 hours away… Yeah, an 8hr combined commute wouldn’t be my first choice for a new career, either. If I manage to get hired, I’m gonna have to relocate to Ft.Wayne from the west coast. Looking forward to those lovely, plains winters. 4 Quote

I was thinking about getting a camper top for the bed of my truck and I could just sleep in the parking lot. Work four 10’s on site and do the rest remote from my house... 1 Quote

cornjulio Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Been there done that. Got myself a 50s neck cardinal red Standard in December. It is a beautiful guitar and the neck is just excellent and it's not too heavy, 4,2 kg. The finish and the frets are flawless, onyl thing I noticed later the trussrod cover is a wee bit off-center. I liked it too much already and the price was good. It sounds great and it is a joy to play. I did compare it to three others (another red one, a blueberry burst and an Inverness green one) and this one just stood out. My first proper guitar was a 1992 Les Paul Standard in ebony that I bought in....1992. I still have it. I heard they can be awful, too heavy, badly assembled etc. but they can be awesome instruments too. 6 Quote
velorush Posted February 8 Posted February 8 That is my favorite color by far. Congratulations. I have been extremely pleased with my '19 50's and I agree on the pickups - first guitar I've bought that I didn't want to change. The only mods I've made to mine were changing to 50's wiring and, very recently, the Callaham locking tailpiece setup suggested in this thread. 1 Quote
cmatthes Posted February 9 Posted February 9 NIce score, Travis! I may have lucked out too with mine. I took a few things I hadn't touched in years up to a local shop, thinking I'd get maybe $1,200-$1,500 in trade value for them all. The day before, I'd scouted out a killer playing and looking 50s Bourbonburst Standard, and also a Goldtop P-90 50s Standard that was a not-too-distant second. There was a cool Gretsch 6128 there too, but although I would move that into 3rd choice, it didn't trip my trigger like the burst. Went back in the next day with my trades, and they were MORE than generous - I was able to walk out the door with the LP I really wanted for ZERO cash beyond my trades! Love this guitar, and it's one of the best Les Paul's I've ever owned. They're really upping their game these days... 7 Quote

I mean, bourbon… 😉🥃 I had looked at a gold top with p90’s as well. Love me some p90’s but the ebony just spoke to me. Quote
