bamboohead Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Anybody had this done to your guitar? Is it really better than a great tech? Quote
hamerhead Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Murkat is an amazing tech/builder/allpowerfulwizard. He re-fretted my Special FM and it is flawless. He also re-fretted my LP and had it PLEK'ed (mostly because the neck was pretty well wore out and AFU). I can't tell a playable difference between the two. The LP was brought back from the dead and regained its #1 status. The FM is its backup. IMO, if the neck is fine and it just needs frets, you could probably get by without a PLEK job. On the flip side, if you're an over-the-top hyper-technical player, or the neck isn't exactly 100%, PLEKing might be worth looking into. Helpful, right? 3 1 Quote
velorush Posted February 27 Posted February 27 From what I read (I know nothing first-hand), the Plek machine is as good as the operator, which seems exactly the case with a manual refret (or dress, if that's what you had in mind). My 2019 Les Paul Standard was (purportedly) Pleked at the factory and has a really great dress, but I don't hold that to be anything like a true, full, Plek at a specialist shop. I found this informative some time back: 1 2 Quote
Steve Haynie Posted February 27 Posted February 27 I think we had a thread on this where the consensus was that a top notch guitar tech was as good as the PLEK machine. Considering all the people here who love the one piece wrap bridge and tailpiece, perfect intonation is not necessary for someone to love their guitar. 4 1 Quote
bamboohead Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 It's @ 250 for plek. 81 Vector. Not sure if I want a machine to breath on it. Haha. THX for input. Murkat is on list. BCR greg did neck repair years ago. Bless u folks for being friendly. 2 Quote

There was another consensus too, I think... That being, a Plek machine is only as good as the person setting it up. 3 Quote

Who was it in here who proclaimed "intonation is for pu$$ies!"? 🙄 2 Quote

tbonesullivan Posted February 28 Posted February 28 A PLEK machine is a tool, and only as good as the person operating it, which is not as easy as many think. For guitar manufacturers, it can be a great way to inspect and set up products before shipment, but otherwise, I don't think it's any better than a skilled guitar tech. 3 Quote
murkat Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Plek is good. But, a plek can not input your personal taste in your requirements. Only human interaction can for the most part. 6 Quote
