tbonesullivan Posted March 25 Posted March 25 Yes, it's a limited edition, but it definitely shows that the Gibson vs Dimarzio lawsuit is not going to go away. I think Dimarzio filed to dismiss back in 2024, but I don't see that the case was dismissed. Gibson is going after both their double cream and the "PAF" wordmark, which apparently Dimarzio also owns. I just got emails from a few retails saying that the "Double Trouble" guitars were in. Anyway, they do look pretty nice: 1 Quote
cmatthes Posted March 25 Posted March 25 By calling them "Double Trouble", they're just taunting DiMarzio now... 4 1 Quote
hamerhead Posted March 25 Posted March 25 It would only be a little funny if Gibson lost and had to recall the guitars. 2 3 Quote

Yeah, I saw the name before the pictures, so I clicked the Music Zoo email, and then "ohhh. this is definitely a statement". Maybe revenge from not even being able to use double cream on the Jimmie Page Les Paul is still on their minds. Who knows. It's gonna be in the courts for years I would assume. 1 Quote
velorush Posted March 25 Posted March 25 I received an email announcement earlier today: I believe we can answer the question in the affirmative. 1 2 Quote
velorush Posted March 25 Posted March 25 ...and, by the way, those aren't double cream bobbins: Burstbucker Pickups with Double Classic White Bobbins These new models come with a feature rarely offered—Burstbucker pickups with Double Classic White bobbins, handcrafted in the Gibson Pickup Shop. Seriously, guys, they're "Classic White." No cream here. Nope, not at all... 1 3 Quote
kizanski Posted March 25 Posted March 25 I'm so over Gibson and their bullshit. Imagine naming a run of guitars after a set of pickups which will just be replaced anyway, because most cork sniffers hate them. Someone pitched that at a board meeting, and everyone looked around the room and said, "Yes. Approved." 2 Quote
RobB Posted March 25 Posted March 25 (edited) I like the pups in my R0. They are not potted, so it can get a bit sketchy with my Soldano/Marshall/Splawn heads. I’m not touching anything on this’un. It’s perfect, factory-stock. Edited March 25 by RobB 1 Quote
hamerhead Posted March 25 Posted March 25 Why not call them 'vintage white' or 'aged white'? Then put unsoldered covers over them so you can take 'em off yourself. You know, before you swap them out. 1 4 Quote

Of course, I sold it to @The Shark and HE swapped them out for some exclusive, boutique, platinum member, hand wound pickups, but he is not a cork sniffer! He’s just a man of much more refined and discerning tastes. Not a cork sniffer!! 3 Quote
BTMN Posted March 26 Posted March 26 Not Dimarzio. And I don’t care. Double Cream rawks my sensibilities. 😎👍🏁 8 1 Quote

With my experience in intermediate guitar repairing I’m an inveterate tinkerer. I usually think nothing about a harmless pup swap. I’m trying to break myself of this habit. tbonesullivan Posted March 26 Author Posted March 26 I think they come with the Burstbucker 61R / 61T set, which lots of people have "opinions" on, mostly comparing them to '57 Classics. I'm honestly not sure why GIbson has so many dang different "Burstbucker" pickups, though part of me suspects they might just all be the same. My favorite Gibson pickups are still the 490R / 498T set, which was standard in lots of Gibson guitars for many years, including the SG Standard, and is still the pickup set in the "regular" Les Paul Custom. It's a lot more simple for me. The truth is that, aside from a few outliers, I can't hear the difference between one pickup and the next. Some are really shit, so I can hear that. Some sound (to me) perfect for the guitar they happen to be in (ex: the Duncans in the Monaco SuperPro), so I leave them because I could spend $1000 on another set of pickups and not hear any improvement. 4 Quote
Dave Scepter Posted March 26 Posted March 26 I'm a huge JB fan and I guess I'm the minority here because I love all of the Gibson's humbucker pickups from the P.A.F's, T-Tops, Shaws and the 490/498's... in fact I swap other pickups in guitars for the Gibsons... 1 Quote
BoogieMKIIA Posted March 26 Posted March 26 I think differences in many pickups are small, especially PAF types. It is amusing that each new Gibson version is more accurate to the original, same as all the Les Paul reissues. I did find a big improvement with Gravelins in my Studio Custom (were SD 59) and my Les Paul ( sometimes I think about putting the first edition Pearly Gates back in the bridge). Of course, you kinda know what different construction Josh did. I haven't done other swaps due to cost and bother, so maybe I'm missing something. Wouldn't mind trying Carondelet pickups, seems most are not PAF clones and are truly hot rodded. Back in the day, I never tried Super Distortion. 1 Quote

I'm with you. I like all the Gibson pickups I have with the exception of the 59 Tributes I had a 2014 Les Paul Trad. Ironically, those are apparently highly desirable due to a bunch of lore around them being discontinued in production guitars, relabelled, and what goes into the reissue custom shop stuff now. Not sure I believe that or even care to think about it (happy @Steve Haynie?). I know I like the pickups I bought from @Jeff R more. Still have the original 57/57+ combo in one guitar and the BB1/BB2s in another. I really like most Gibby pups that live in that 7k-9k range a lot. I'll tell you what I don't like though - Double Creams in a Clown Burst Lester. I know I'm pissing on some core memories for y'all a decade older than me, but that aesthetic lives in the same drawer in my head as every classic rock song Z106 used to play that made me change the channel as fast as my brain could recognize the song and make my hand move to the radio and tubbed-out, 72 Novas in primer gray and bondo white. It took so much cheap beer on my porch in South Austin back in my 20s just to realize the first Boston album didn't actually suck. "Enough High Life, and these songs kick ass!" Same conversion therapy did not work for Grand Funk, Foghat, or Styx though. And I'm not even getting into the Great-Painted-Face Ones for fear of being banned, or maybe outright hunted down and murdered. 3 Quote

velorush Posted March 26 Posted March 26 The 2019 Lester's Burstbucker 1 & 2s are the first stock pickups I haven't wanted to change. The change to 50's wiring just made them better (more useable/versatile) IME. If you'd asked before I brought that one in, I'd have said categorically I hate AlNiCo 2 pickups. That has now proven to be incorrect. Quote

I'm right there with you. I outgrew both their shtick and music by the time I was 14. Many, many others had a similar experience. Some still see them as great innovators and artists. To each, his own. 5 Quote
