hamerican gigolo Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Members of HFC! Can anyone recommend a overdrive/distortion pedal?I need good note defin-ition,moderate gain, not a fuzz pedal.I do not want to change the overall soundof my guitar and amp.Any help or suggestions? Thanks! P.S.I play mostly blues/classic rock, with a little country/jazz thrown in forgood measure.
burningyen Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 What amp do you use? A pedal can sound awesome with one amp and like $#!+ with another.
hamerican gigolo Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 Hello Ben! My amp is a Burriss 2x10 combo.EL-84 power tubes.18 watt.Imagine a lowerpowered Vibrolux Reverb.Fender chimey clean.Dirtier turned up.
DEMENTED Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Easy..a Fulltone OCD or a Hermida Mosferatu. I have both, the OCD seems better suited for Marshall type amps while the Mosferatu works well with Fender types.

I have both, the OCD seems better suited for Marshall type amps while the Mosferatu works well with Fender types. I'll second the OCD. It works great with my three VERY different amps (Dr Z, Bogner, Mesa Mark).
Celtic_Bill Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I "third" the vote for the OCD, works great with my Marshall/Mesa-Boogie, and Fender......
bobbymack Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 If you can get your hands on a Zendrive, it totally nails what you're looking for through EL84 amps...Or a properly adjusted RAT.
seeker Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 A relatively inexpensive alternative is the Bad Monkey (Digitech). I've got many overdrive/distortion pedals, and it gets more than it's fair share of time.

MTM105 Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 any kudos for BOSS Drive Zone? Digital, but nearly perfect. From Tube Scream, KLON, Rat, Electro Harmonix, etc...... Pick and choose from 22 sounds, you should find at least 3 or 4 that suits your needs. From Heavy Metal to Fuzz to virtually the entire spectrum of sounds.same price as a Fulltone nowadays. there is a Fulltone simulation too on it.look into Rocktron Nitro subtle (to not so subtle) compression boost for around $50 if you are playing through humbuckers.
FunkyE9th Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I like the barber ltd.. .http://www.barberelectronics.com/LTD.htmlCheck out the link and hear audio samples with a Hamer Vanguard.-FunkyE9th
El Kabong Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 The only one one that will *not* change the sound of your guitar or amp is the Xotic BB Preamp. It goes from clean boost, to moderate, to medium gain. The note definition is spectacular. Some guy on here, BCR something or other sells them. I recon you should give the man a call. They are *that* good.
JJ Paul Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 +1 for the OCD.Just got one in today from one of our fellas. This 'lil box is vey responsive to playing dynamics, has a wide range of useable sounds and has 2 modes (on-on switchie) to better couple it to your favourite amp. It's a keeper, for sure.JJ
Brooks Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I do not want to change the overall sound of my guitar and amp.Any help or suggestions? guyatone OD2. very transparent, so much so that it won a guitar player mag editors pick. obviously, i'm impressed w/ a lot of guyatones stuff.
polara Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 hamerican gigolo, I also play through a small EL84 amp and need crunch-to-roar (but not scooped metal) sounds. The Fulltone OCD or Fulltone Fulldrive 2 work great. I suspect nearly anything based on a Tube Screamer kinda circuit's okay.I am now using a Visual Sound Route 66, which is basically a Tube Screamer on one side (with an added switchable bass boost) and a compressor on the other (with added switchable EQ). Mostly 'cos my Fulltone's switch broke and I had to get something else to gig with until I could get a switch!Lotsa good suggestions in the thread. Can you take your amp to a store and try a few?
Brewmaster Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Lots of good suggestions but let me add one for consideration, Tech 21 Double drive. I'm not sure if they are still being made but I saw one on Pedal Geek for $99.00. I got one from Poe for about $70.00 a couple of years ago. You should be able to find one used for cheap. These sound good in front of everything I have had. I really like it with my modded Peavey which is also an el-84 based amp. I have an OCD and love it. If you are looking for a little smoother and fatter OD try a Menatone Blue Collar. I like the Blue Collar so much I may be selling my Keeley Mod TS-9 that I have had for a few years.
jerseydrew Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I didn't like the OCD pedal. I guess that's why there are so much different pedals. I though the OCD was too brash and harsh. The Xotic BB preamp is pretty good, but nothing beats my Fulldrive 2. that's my 2 cents
seeker Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Another, somewhat higher priced alternative, is the Fulltone Fat Boost. It can go from transparent boost to overdrive/distortion. One thing it does do to your signal is make it seem more clear and crisp. One of those hard to describe, you gotta be there things.
hamerican gigolo Posted August 25, 2006 Author Posted August 25, 2006 Thanks to all of you who replied. There are so many od's to choose from, but thank God i live in a country where there are so many choices. Have a great weekend!
newbie builder Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I'm not a big fan of fulltone stuff but that's just me. If you want the fat boost, you can find the layout and schematic at generalguitargadets.com because Fuller ripped the design from a DIY guy. He finally started paying royalties because of all the heat he got but the design is still out there so you could pay some DIY guy to build it for you cheap. I'd suggest the Tim pedal by Paul Cochrane.Paul is a designer for heritage amps and knows his stuff- his pedal is amazing. I has treble and bass cut controls, gain, volume controls, a seperate boost section with gain and tone controls plus a pull pot for clipping, and to top it off an FX loop. Less complicated than it sounds. Very easy to use, gives you more of your amp, extremely transparent sounding. If you like the sound of your amp, I think you'd love the pedal.Lots of reviews/info on thegearpage.netAnd if you have lots of money to burn, check out BJF pedal. Awsome stuff, but pricey and I think you're probably better off with the Tim for this application anyway.Good luck in your OD quest.
guymandude Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I have a keeley modded TS-9 and love for both my Soldano and my Fender. I tried alot of other od but this one kills!

There is a 5 month wait on the Tim and Timmys' right now. Some guys on The Gear Page are selling them at quite a premium. Paul makes everything by hand in his garage so you can imagine how back-ordered he is. A close friend has both as well as a Heritage Colonial amp. Good pedals but I wasn't blown away by either but the amp on the amp on the other hand may be the best I have heard.

The new ones are much better, night and day and much more controllable IMHO.
