I've been on a bit of a spree lately, so much so that I haven't gotten around to listening to all of them yet. But here are my recent additions:

Pat Metheny/Ornette Coleman, "Song X Twentieth Anniversary": I was in college when this came out and had no idea how groundbreaking it was until I saw the live show. Second row center, under the influence. Holy crap, what intensity. Five virtuosos (including Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Denardo Coleman) soloing simultaneously pretty much all night long was mind-blowing. If you're into this sort of thing, the anniversary package starts out with 5 unreleased cuts from the original sessions, then the original album.

Gov't Mule, "High & Mighty": Haven't gotten around to it yet, but I've heard good things. Still, I've been underwhelmed by their stuff since Allen Woody died. He was the engine, the power.

Motorhead, "Another Perfect Day Expanded Edition" and "BBC Sessions": Brian Robertson is my all-time favorite guitarist, so I have a soft spot for his short time in Motorhead, which was weird and off-kilter by anyone's estimation. There are some good songs and performances on APD but the production was horrid; here's hoping this repackaged version has also been remixed and/or remastered. The bonus CD is a live show recorded in England featuring this lineup; much better than another show I have with Robbo recorded at L'Amour's in Brooklyn (they took the "Fast & Loud" motto way too far that night) but nonetheless further proof of why this combination didn't work out. Looking forward to the BBC sessions disc as I've yet to hear a bad one in this series.

Shooter Jennings, "Put The O Back In Country" and "Electric Rodeo": Waylon's son is being marketed as a country artist and he certainly is to some degree (I discovered him on CMT) but as we all know, the line between modern country and classic rock is damn near non-existent these days, so Shooter and his band sound much more like '70s southern rockers to me. Both CDs are excellent with lots of good, tough songs.

The Redwalls - De Nova

Bob Dylan - Modern Times

Tom Petty - Highway Companion

The first two are excellent, the Petty disc is better than his last (The Last DJ) but still not up to his best.

My iTunes collection is over 100G (and yes, it's all legal - mostly ripped from my records and CDs and the rest downloaded from eMusic), and I've spent a bunch of time rating my songs. For the past couple of months I've been playing a randomized smart playlist of my 4 and 5 star rated songs (over 18 days of music), and it's a fun way to listen...Thelonious Monk followed by the Buzzcocks followed by the Beatles followed by Fountains of Wayne followed by Allison Krauss!

Beatallica - A Garage Dayz Night - all the tunes might still be a free download at beatallica.com - killer McTallica/Beatles parody.

Tommy Emmanuel - The Mystery - not his best but there are some killer tunes on it..AND I see him play tomorrow night! Can't Wait!

Wes Montgomery, Sco, Charlie Hunter - 3 mix CDs Brooks gave me a long time ago. Cool chit.

Stephen Bennet - 'Everything Under the Sun'. Great fingerpicker and harp guitarist.

Also his Beatles solo guitar CD is incredible.

Edited to add: Timmons newest 'Resolution'..a totally listenable rawk instrumental disc..wow. Has a raw, live feel. Good'un.

Opeth - all eight albums!

Progressive metal at its best!

wolfmother : retro 70's hard rawk, good but not great.

allan holdsworth - 16 men of tain : dunno why i bought this, i learned long ago that i love his solos but hate his tunes. nothings changed.

chilli peppers - stadium arcadium : again, good but not great.

aerosmith - live bootleg : haven't heard this since my brothers vinyl copy in the early 80's. lotsa vibe, good but not great.

the sword : shitty stoner metal from austin tx (w/ a good PR agent; everything i read about them made them sound like the 2nd coming of sabbath).

counting the days until the new scofield/mmw comes out!

Tell me about it! I downloaded that album a few weeks ago and that was my exact reaction Ah well.

Anyway, The last 2 albums I've obtained (downloaded) were John 5's first album After a couple listens, I think it's technically impressive, but otherwise pretty boring (maybe it'll grow on me?). The other album is the debut by Field Music. XTC-inspired brit-pop, so of course I love it.

I woulda been spinning the CD's Brooks burned me all weekend but left 'em in the car we left at home for the weekend. My Mp3 player stays on shuffle but it seems to have it's own preferences. It for some reason REALLY likes Dane Cook, X, Buck Owens, Lewis Black, and one Brian Setzer tune in particukar. I just loaded it with a Leela James album and the debut from Morningwood, it hasn't played but just a couple of tunes from them so far.

Keep in mind that I'll call just about anything XTC-inspired with only the slightest provocation . Still, I think it's pretty great (as is the first Futureheads album, which has a much greater, early-XTC influence).

I like the Futureheads too. I've downloaded the first Field Music album from eMusic (they have the new one too). I'll check it out tomorrow on my drive to work. The bits I previewed sounded promising!

I've been on a huge King's X binge as of late. After I saw them in concert awhile back I bought their whole catalog except for one so far plus some solo stuff from each of them. Some items were bouhgt right from their own website. I also bought an expensive shirt etc. just to support them a little.

The latest is Ty Tabor's Rock Garden just released last week. More rocking than his previous stuff but still plenty of harmonies, good melody and of course his good playing.

Their drummer, Jerry Gaskill, released a killer solo album which is so much better than I thought it might be. I think it's my favorite album of the year so far, and probably my favorite of their solo albums.

Ty Tabor - Homeschool The Demos Vol 1 = Ty's original demos of many of King's X' songs. A volume 2 will also be released. I like listening to those to see how things have changed when the band gets a hold of it. Same thing with the solo albums; it's neat to see what each individual is about and what they bring to the mix of the band.

bruford, jean luc ponty, and esp tony williams lifetime.
