Guest JackButler Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I don't know who this black guy is playing the white Ibanez superstrat, but he sure is underrated. He pulls of some hellicopter Floyd Rose wang bar chops about 40 secs into the clip. THAT is the incredible Mr. Larry Mitchell! SUPER player and a really nice human being.
polara Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Sonja, check out Marc Ribot with his Cuban band... Marc Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos. Really wild, free, fierce playing, at once melodic and unpredictible, with this great pure tone and lots of emotion
JohnnyB Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Marc Ribot? ...What to listen to, if I want to listen to real guitar playing by him?He does studio work on a retro jazz/blues album, "Dreamland," by Madeleine Peyroux. Made a believer of me.
Sitamoia50 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I always crack up at these underrated threads. People always insist on putting guitar monsters that are actually highly rated in there for some reason. I noticed Brian May, Nuno Bettencourt to name a few. they are held in pretty high esteem if you ask me. Anyways a few guys i think might be in the underrated category and it's only my opinion. I'd say Johnny Marr is pretty under-rated, I have to agree with Pirate Flynn about Todd Rundgren (hugely Under-rated) Todd can shred with the best of 'em and plays with lotsa soul. Paul Kossoff and James Honeyman-Scott are a few others off the top of my head........
Abaco Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Dave MenikettiVolker StrifflerRobben FordSlashJohn SykesI don't know if this is really "of all time", but they certainly come to mind...
Brewmaster Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Lots of good ones named so I'll only mention one more..... Terry Kath is someone who flew totally under the radar. Listen to the first two Chicago albums and you will hear what I mean. Question 67& 68 reveals him as the first shredder, had but had soul to his playing. There is a free form guitar cut that he did at the request of Jimi Hendrix where he experimented with feed back, dive bomb etc. He was the player that Hendrix said "blew him away" . Very much an innovator that history missed probably because the later Chicago albums were pop schlock at best.
polara Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Yyyyyeah. I don't really see Brian May, Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Slash, Robben Ford as under-the-radar guys that are languishing in the dusty cutout bins of history. Rob Fetters...heck yeah. Guy's amazing, wish I'd thought of him.

Very much an innovator that history missed probably because the later Chicago albums were pop schlock at best.I always wondered why Chicago went from being a kick-ass R&B and horn band in the first 2 albums to progressively more inane pop schlock after that. I guess Terry's early demise may have had something to do with that.Trivia question: What music company did Terry Kath start?

By who?
tafkathundernotes Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I've got The Joneses CD from 15 years ago. What else has Billy Loosigian done? Never heard anything else by him, that I am aware of. He lives here in town and owns/manages a bunch of commercial real estate. He's a great guy and I get to jam with him a couple of times a year. He and the drummer in my band have been friends for 30 years. He plays regularly with some good local blues acts, mostly. I don't think he has a lot of time for much more than that. I didn't know he was "famous" outside the area. He's a helluva guitar player. Edit: To add my own unknown/underrated guitar player - it's a guy named Mike Barnes out of Asheville, NC. HHB knows him and will back me up.....right Bill?
El Kabong Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Will Sargeant form Echo and the BunnymenPorl Thompson from the CureRon Sexsmith

JohnnyB Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Brian May? Slash? Robben Ford? Nuno? Once a major guitar company creates your signature model guitar, "underrated" no longer enters into the discussion. Who's the next underrated guitarist, Les Paul?

mathman Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Not sure if this guy rates but Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe. One of my favorite players.
serial Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 James Honeyman-ScottRick WitkowskiJohnny MarrI'd say Elliot Easton, but he's not really underrated or unknown.Dean Deleo-one of the best live players I've ever seen.

Yes... very Paul Rogers like. The Joneses sounded like the ultimate bar band to me. That is not meant with any disrespect at all. I would have liked to have seen them.

hamersandstrats Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Jerry Garcia is the most underrated guitarist of all time. Occaisionally he pops up in one of the guitar mags, but he is rarely thought of as a great guitar player. Which he was. He is often written off as "noodler," but the truth is some of his solos are brilliant, melodic and he can shred when he wants to (in a jazz/country sense of the word). Frank Zappa could also play his arse off when he wanted to, but his personality was never the "guitar hero"

belikerick Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Don't think these guys are "all time" underrated but they are VERY underated in my book. Steve Bartek Davey Johnstone - always liked his playing, especially excellent on "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road" I have to reiterate Kirk Kurtwood, I've seen him live a few times and he's a monster player. ...and James Honeyman Scott uh, Mick Ronson too Oh yeah and Tony Iommi (nah, just kidding )
