Stokesdead Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Has anybody here shipped guitars w/o cases? If so any tips? Is this just asking for a disaster?~Stokesdead
atquinn Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I've had guitars shipped to me in gig bags, but no case at all? I don't think I'd ever do that (or accept a used guitar shipped to me that way).-Austin
serial Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I've had three or four shipped w/no case or bag-they arrived fine (one was a Hamer doubleneck!), but I was sweating their arrival the whole time.
Stokesdead Posted October 17, 2006 Author Posted October 17, 2006 Its brooks' mahogany special. So it already has a neck crack kinda makes me nervous. or I could drive to meet him 3 hours away.~Stokesdead
KH Guitar Freak Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Pack in a box with plenty of foam... and pray hard FEDEX doesn't drive their vans over it...
Submariner85 Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Package it yourself with lots and lots of bubble wrap and don't forget to support the neck. I've shipped quite a few and haven't had any problems.
alpep Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I have done it. wrap the guitar in a ton of bubble wrap. then put additional cardboard in the box to keep it firm. if you have some hard flat foam that could help too. remember thought that if it does get broke, they will probably not pay the claimgood luck.
ArnieZ Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I recently shipped a guitar UPS and they specifically asked me if it were packed in a hard case inside. I was given the impression they might not accept it for shipping or not allow insurance if tit wasn't.ArnieZ
Matt Mattson Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 3 hours, $50 (round trip) in gas, and a meal on Brooks -- I'd just go get it. If it's that close, why take the chance?

If it's that close, why take the chance?I'm thinking the same thing. Chris-- just go on a road trip. See some music stores. Catch a show. On the right weekend I would be willing to drive!I have bought two instruments that were shipped without cases. They arrived unharmed, but one box was not going to last much longer.
Turdus Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I bought a new Fender Strat 12 from Musc123. The guitar came in the original Fender packaging, which consisted of: * no case, or gig bag. Guitar was wrapped in a very thin sheet of foam* one thin triangular shaped box to keep the guitar from shifting* the triangular box was placed in a rectangular box, which had a top and bottom holder to keep the triangular box from moving too much. This was a Japanese Fender, so it made all the way from there, in this packaging, without a scratch. Granted, for the overseas trip they probably put 5 of these in a bigger box, etc.I would also agree that if I reused this packaging, for this guitar, it may not arrive in one piece. And doubtful the carrier would pay a claim.
Craig Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 See if Brooks will meet you halfway, and you treat for lunch. Get to meet a board member and feel better about the guitar arriving safely.
blackfbiv Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I assume Brooks is gonna put it in a box rather than stick a stamp on the headstock. When Brooks packs it you have little to fear. He's world class when it comes to shipping guitars. The import Duotone he sent my way could've withstood a nuke... (thin gig bag in a carton) FWIW, I'd make the effort to pick it up, just to meet Brooks. (I know heady talk from a guy who couldn't even manage to make a phone call when he was in the Cincy area-I apologize again TT) But I have driven 200 miles (1 way) on more than one occasion to pick up guitars in Calgary... Since they're mass-produced, most people won't care if it gets damaged and they have to have another one shipped to them. Also, it's probably cheaper for companies like Fender to just eat shipping damage as opposed to insuring their guitars. -Austin
sw686blue Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Man, I get so nervous shipping guitars and I pack them to survive a war. I would never recommend shipping without a case and would never do it in my right mind.Take a road trip and pick it up.
doody Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I've had 2 acoustics, a T51 and a Diablo shipped to me without cases. All arrived safe and sound. I drove 150 miles to pick up my chap. Ended up coming home with an amp as well on that trip.
jwhitcomb3 Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Double box it, with lots of padding inside the guitar box and even more between the boxes.-Jonathan
bobbymack Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Double box it, with lots of padding inside the guitar box and even more between the boxes.-Jonathan+1, you'll be fine
straightblues Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I am always worried shipping guitars. I had a top seperate on my Ovation last winter. I always double box and use lots of peanuts and bubble wrap. I just bought a cheap SX SJM-62 from Rondo Music. It is a $139 Chinese guitar. It was put in a sinlge box with cheap chinese cardboard and one little piece of styrafoam supporting the neck. The guitar arrived in perfect shape. When you go to some place like Guitar Center and see the boxes that the guitars ship in from the factory, they are all simple single cardboard with a little foam inside. No bubble wrap or double boxing.
hamerhead Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I had a guy ship a Dano 12-string in the original cardboard box from California (I'm in Wizzconsin) with the box taped in 2 spots and the guitar tuned to pitch - and it didn't have a scratch. I'm still in awe over that one.
Bruiser Brody Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Yep..box in a box. I shipped a gigantic Dean ML this way (also the way I originally got it from Dean). It arrived in Canada w/o a scratch.
