polara Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Anyone else noticed that for pretty much anything musical people say "Oh, the older stuff is better." Yeah I can see it with a '62 Strat or whatever but people now are waxing poetic over the Norlin-period Les Pauls that were considered crap in the 80s, and even weird Japanese stuff like Vantage guitars that were considered jokes when I was in high school.Maybe the stuff was good then. But also maybe we're knee-jerking "old" = "vintage" = "best."So what is BETTER now? Or at least as good as it used to be?iPods are better. So are computers.Cars last longer. When I was a kid, 100,000 miles was an OLD car and now I'm just getting it broken in at 100K. Better? Hmm. Well, safer and better mileage.Hamers are as good as they've ever been.I can buy better coffee now. What else?
Nuclear Wessel Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Agreed on Hamers. They're as good or better than ever. Peavey amps? The Penta has really caught my interest. even other models like the XXX and JSX are far cooler than their offerings in years past. Definitely better than their "vintage" 80's amps!Studio technology. Recording your own CD on your computer is finally not just possible, but pretty easy! Studio software is easier to use and more powerful than ever. Audio plugins let you get close to the sound of high end studio gear with software simulations. And as far as hardware, if you've got the cash there are more high end mics, mic preamps, compressors and EQ's on the market now than I've ever seen. My Sweetwater catalogs are full of amazing gear!A friend who's doing remodeling on his home says home materials are getting better. They cost less, but if you get the right stuff, it's more durable because the technology has improved. He pointed out some practices that have improved. Nails used ot be used to hold a floor together. Over time the floor would start to squeak because the board could loosen up around the nail. They apparently use screws now. Simple, but they didn't do it like that in the old days.
Guest pirateflynn Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Amps made by Germino, Blockhead, Bruno, etc are more consistant and reliable but have the same great familar tones.......and beer. The beer is better today.
Scooter Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Well, the Packers were better in "the old days".
pesocaster Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 the thought that 73 strats are considered "vintage" and going for well over the $250 (max) I would ever pay for one.... Hell in the 80's you couldn't give them away.... now I see them in the $2k range.... THAT is funny!! If I take a crap today and save it for 25 years will it have "mojo" ... or will it still be a piece of shit? ..... I'd say even most of todays Mexi strats are made better than 90% of 70's strats...
Punkavenger Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Electronics and cars have definitely gotten better ... My Toyota truck has 112,000 miles on it ... original brakes, one tune up and a battery, tires, is all I've done to it ... AMAZING But "mojo" or "soul" is really hard to find. look at todays music, there are some good things... Govt Mule, Wolfmother, a few others, but nothing in the mainstream, nothing compared to the 60's 70's or even 80's Art! thats certainly taken a backseat to technology ... Can anyone name more than a couple current GOOD artists? Certainly no Picassos or Van Goghs around Beer! YES! lots of good beer, and food! just walking into a Trader Joes puts a big smile on my face EDUCATION ... is horrible, I have some younger friends in their 20's, the only history that was ever taught is founding fathers stuff ... didn't even study WWII or Vietnam! and that was before no child left behind I guess todays society is perfect if you want to drive around a lot in a car that will never break down, listen to crappy music in perfect "stereophonic sound" and drink tasty beer to kill the pain
Steve Haynie Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 I must agree that Hamer is at its best now. Peavey is a company that has been reinventing itself since the beginning, but it really showed in the 1990's.The only reason for me to want an old Ibanez is nostalgia, not a longing for the way they played. Everything is a collectible now, but not necessarily because of greatness. PRS and Jackson were hits right off the bat, so they should be treated as having a value. Aria Pro II Explorer copies... nope!
tafkathundernotes Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Oreos. Friggin' things are tiny compared to years ago. They also took out whatever fat stuff they had in them to make them less unhealthful. That kind of screwed up the taste too.Beer IS much better.
BCR Greg Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Glues have gotten better, cutting tools have gotten better, measuring devices have gotten better(can you tell what I do for a living?).The science of building guitars has gotten better, but the available materials have not.My jokes get better. My appearance, nope.
Celtic_Bill Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Beer has definitely gotten better, cruise ships have gotten better (at least my wife thinks so...). Technology in general I think has brought a lot of positives to our society (My day job as an engineer may bias my technology opinion...) My one gripe, Pub glasses have gone downhill severely! Do you know how many bars I have to go to to swipe enough decent pub glasses to keep my home bar up and running?
David B Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 My 1994 Mustang GT has 221,000 miles on it. Is that considered the old days or new days?
Steve Haynie Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 --> QUOTE(David B @ Nov 10 2006, 12:58 PM) ← My 1994 Mustang GT has 221,000 miles on it. Is that considered the old days or new days? New would be roughly within ten years in my opinion, but your Mustang would count as a newer car. My 1990 Taurus was doing great at 220,000 miles. Then it got totalled.
Steve Haynie Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 LOL.... Fords! When a car can get 300,000 miles on it you have no room to laugh at it!
serial Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Chicks are WAY hotter now than when I was younger. And unfortunately, much younger too. Girls are hitting puberty two to three years earlier, at least in part due to growth hormones added to milk and beef. Maybe that's why most vegan chicks are so flat.

belgian Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 weed is stronger. Yes indeed, the weed we had when I was young, wasn't worth shit... Now : Of course I never inhale...

On the contrary, I'm finding middle-aged women incredibly attractive. The young ones do nothing for me any more; probably because I have a daughter that age. Funny how things change.

Moose Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 iPods are better. Ipods are better than what? Last week's Ipod? They certainly aren't better than a real stereo playing a source that isn't badly compressed. And they aren't better than listening to music moving the air rather than being piped through earbuds. And you can't share your music in the same way as when you're in a room listening with friends. And the whole one-song at a time thing doesn't do much for me. I really like the album format and the music that sticks with me after all the years seems to range from Dark Side of the Moon to Ten to OK Computer where the beginning to end listening experience is much greater than just listening to any one song. And on top of all that, more than a few people have had problems with their iPods, so they aren't really bastions of quality, either. So, I contend that iPods aren't better than a good, old-fashioned stereo system with quality components. Not for sound quality, not for the listening experience, and not for the overall fostering of music appreciation.Today's Hamers are fine instruments. And a LOT of great instruments are being produced with the aid of technology and tools, to the point where electronics choice, wood selection, and finishing are really great equalizers. When the devil is down to those details, something's really going well. There are also many hand-builders making both electric and very find acoustic guitars that are absolutely amazing. We haven't had that selection of quality lutherie in my lifetime.Cars are obvious. I have a Toyota truck. I replaced one part, other than that it has been 6 years of oil changes, tires, and occasionally washing off the dust. I LOVED my 65 mustang, but it took a lot more care.Motorcycles are absolutely amazing. With an exception or two, they've gotten lighter, more powerful, nimbler, and easier to ride at what seems to be to be an amazing pace since the mid 80s when designers introduced the perimiter frames. And everything that goes with that for cars and bikes -- from tires to suspensions -- are light years ahead.
savethematches Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 I'd say that cheap amps are greatly improved. When I started playing in the mid 80s, there wasn't much to choose from if you were on a tight budget, and the ones that were available sounded like crap. Now, the prices have dropped and sound quality has improved. Add to that the better yet cheaper effects, and one can get a pretty damn good tone for very little money.
polara Posted November 11, 2006 Author Posted November 11, 2006 iPods are better today than the were in the past.
