AdmiralB Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Anyone know what happened to them??? They used to advertise in VG all the time. They were in Florida. They sold out to Sam Ash. Elliot Rubenstein, the owner, is or was also the owner of Dean Guitars - he bought the name in the mid-'90s and started up production in Florida.
Guest JackButler Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I may be wrong..but IIRC they sold out to become a Sam Ash franchise.. the guy had Armadillo Music or something to that effect and they actually owned the Dean brand for a little while.
Brewmaster Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Elliot sold out to Sam Ash and currently owns Dean and Armadillo. Many former Thoroughbred employees work for Dean and or Armadillo, including an excellent player named John Puhl. (Monster chops) . Kent Sonnenberg who ran the guitar department at the Hillborough Ave location now owns Legends Guitars in Tampa. He also has several former Thoroughbred employees working for him.Armadillo
Devnor Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I bought my Mesa Mark III combo from them in 1989!
BTMN Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 As Brew said Elliott Rubinson owns Armadillo and has several music lines including Dean guitars, DDrums, and Beringher amps IIRC. Good guy too. Kent is a great guy to deal with. I still have a nice Thouroughbred Tshirt. My '96 Korina Dean Caddy I got last year from a guy in Va. came in a Thoughrobred gigbag.
mathman Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Went to a store in Tampa years and years ago. Think I still have a sticker.....
cmatthes Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I bought my White Gibson EDS 1275 from them. It was stupid cheap too in 1992...
jettster Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Seems like I remember right before they moved into the big store, it was this little place that was just packed with a ridiculous amount of guitars. You could hardly move around in there and I do recall Elliot as well. Seems like that was my first real life exposure to Hamer guitars.I actually still have two t-shirts from there, bought my first and only 4x12 from them guys around 80-81. Used to love that place.
Wally Gator Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Mid 90's Matchless Clubman head - $700... sold it... double rats!!
