belgian Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 There's a Blues Band that plays the Tri State area and hail from Prospect CT.Their name is SMOKING OPEY I use to actually check where they were playing on the weekends to go catch trhe show and party their. How this band didn't make it BIG is beyond me and probly due to it BLUES show. The lead guitarist is EXCEPTIONAL and also is just as good on Slide. He also is the lead singer. They guy is the WHOLE package. The Drummer and Bass player are TIGHT.If your ever in CT New-Haven and go too CUTLERS MUSIC. Which is basically a Record Shop from the 50's which has NOT changed much.Pick up a CD of this band. You will be impressed. I haven't looked on Amazon or anythinglike that. So I'm not sure about their nationl attention. Googled them, but can't find anything.......
Hamer95USA Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Also, MIRV, a San Fran band (I believe) whose album Dancing Naked in a Minefield I am forever promoting. The rest of their recorded material is so-so IMO, but they were a serious trip live. Hey Darc, I used to gig with Penny Piper (bassist/vocalist), Jeff Gomes (drummer) mother, in one of the local cover bands around town. I'm friends with her and bump into Jeff every now and then at their mom's house when he's home from touring. Guitar George
darc Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Cool, sounds like you run in some pretty hip circles.Interestingly, a Google search for Penny Piper turns up everything from a Property Manager, Corporate Trainer to a Barak Obama advocate, to a porn star (Or so I infer... no clicky at work LOL.) I wonder if this bassist/vocalist is also one of the above?
Rhys Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 The Pursuit of Happiness.+1 for whoever said Spocks Beard - awesome band, saw them live a few weeks ago & they were superb.
Brewmaster Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 The Blues Project. Right out of Greenwich Village around 1965-66. They never did much but from the heart of this band came Blood Sweat and tears. They had a reunion concert in Central park ca 1973 that was broadcast on WNEW FM NYC IIRC and released as a double album. (I still have it).I'm late to the party did anybody mention the Archangels?
Pieman Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 This thread is sooooooo looooooong......Did anybody mention "Crack the Sky" which was from around Pittsburgh. Caught them one night around 1978 and they were a lot of fun.
Craig Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Brewie - Arc Angels or Archangels? If memory serves, you are talking about the SRV band that went on after his untimely demise. I've been looking for that CD forever.DavidE - I just saw Randy Jackson at a local restaurant playing solo acoustic, he's still phenomenal.Other great no-name bands:Bad Moon Rising - Doug Aldritch on guitar, missed the 80's but still rocked.Violets Demise - Oni Logan & Rowan Robertson doing some masterful old feeling 70's type rock, weird but soulful.King's X - I'll ever understand why they weren't so much bigger.Dirty Rig & Brand New Sin - great bands full of alcohol fueled rock-n-roll
Stike Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 I'm so sad I never got to see these guys live before they split up. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...fe-cc50930af92b
