I'm pretty sure this is the one that was for sale at Cowtown Guitars. Looks pretty nice.

Thanks Ken. Being that it sat at Cowtown for a year at $1,399, good luck with the BIN price. That's what I call a "tumbleweeds price".

Most things on their Web site are way over-priced. That 'burst seems to be priced right now, though, at $1099 with OHSC.

1977-chunky good

1978-less chunky, but still good

1979-semi chunky to slim

1980-slim to freaking pencil thin

1981-pencil thin

1982-pencil thin to slim

1983-slim (too few made for me to have a really good comparison)

1984-no longer a model, but a few were made, usually slim, but better than 80-82s

1985-same as 84, but even fewer made.

Have you seen this one on Ebay? 1980 model. You folks out there would know this, do the sunbursts of that time usually have skinny or fatter necks?

Check it out (hope the link works).

hmmm..........suddenly that '80 doesn't seem so cool after all!

Oops, didn't mean to bash anyone's guitar. I'm just a fan of thicker necks.

Serial's overview looks pretty good to me... on average. But don't knock em' till you try em'.

I have an '80 with a "D" shape that feels a bit meaty and a '79 that is a little smaller at the nut but warms up as you move down. The '79 by the way is a touch heavier but rings like a bell and is harmonic city... so much for the light weight = tone camp too.

Just gotta try each one, they are all different!

And that's half the fun!

:D

1099 USD is a reasonable price for an all original 1979 Sunburst in good condition incl. OHSC.

Just try to find one today.

Especially in europe it seems to be nearly impossible to get your hands on a decent one. I remember a 1979 Sunburst which was sold for 1300 EUR on Ebay last year.

I remember a Honey-colored 1979 Sunburst which was sold for much less than that amount last year.

I still regret that. Can I buy it back from you for the same price???

I thought you European guys had all the old Hamers? Don't you also get them cheap from us because of our weak dollar? I sold a nice EBMM SS Axis to "Auge"in Austria a while back and that's what he told me.

I think its difficult to pin down the neck profiles to any particular year of manufacture.

Ive had 3 79,s a 1980 and present a 1981 Sunburst and the 79,s all had thinner necks than the 80 and 81.

I noticed the 80 and 81 had a flatter fingerboard radius (12"?) than the tighter 79,s (10"?) also.

The neck on the 1981 is about the same depth as a medium 90,s Hamer and definately much deeper than an early 90,s model.

The only thing of consistency noticed is all the early Hamers have narrow necks 42mm width at nut and 50mm width at 12th fret.

The latter Hamers are 43mm width nut and 51-52mm 12th fret.

This guitar is not a Sunburst-it's a Special.

True that the necks aren't 100% consistent-that's a rule of thumb. I could never get along with Specials because the necks were too skinny until I found my graphic 81. I like that a LOT.

Hi Gabe,

well, i just fell in love with your guitar when i saw it the first time. Soon i learned that it is also one of the best sounding guitars i ever played. I always willingly recall the night when i bought that particular guitar from you at the gas station somewhere in the Netherlands.

Nobody knows what will happen in the future but for now i can say that i will never ever sell this guitar.

Anyway, glad to hear from you, Gabe :-)

In my opinion it's a myth that we have all the old Hamers here in europe. I think here are maybe six or seven people with a decent collection of them.

Please remember that it is pretty expensive to get a guitar to germany for example.

If i buy a Hamer for 1000 USD i will have to pay approx. at least 120 USD for shipping, 200 USD for taxes and the paypal fees. The total price is 1350 USD. It's no bargain anymore.

There are quite a few of the older Hamers in Germany already. Germany was one of Hamer's largest markets. In no small part, as I understand it, to Peter Wolf, who is now with PRS.

Why would he buy it and flip it so quick for no profit? In fact he had to pay shipping to get it to his house and pay ebay fees to sell it? That looks like a nice guitar nevertheless - real classy.

I just bought the Cowtown/Ebay Sunburst from the seller. Got it for the Cowtown price he paid for it. Should have it next week.

He shoots! He scores!

Great deal on that. I'm glad to see that they came down to Earth on their price.
