RichRS6 Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Hi from Cornwall. First post from me but been lurking here for a while searching for a Standard which I have now managed to get hold of. Great thread and thought I'd join in so here's a couple of pics of my '78. Had this for about a year now after searching for a long time. Bought from a music store in London. It still has the original dealers sticker on the back of the headstock, not sure about the Knobs or switch tip and a couple of the pots have been changed, pretty sure the P/Us are original but would rather play it than dissect it. One of these days I may even get round to cleaning it !

BTMN Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Welcome Rich. Nice opening posts here and the other!
RichRS6 Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Thanks Guys. Its the second Burst I've owned. The First was back in the early 80's but for some reason I could never get it to play (or stay) in tune and I sold it on.I never worked out why it had tuning problems, I did everything I could at the time to try and fix it but gave up on it and P/Xed it for a White 1980 Block inlay Gibson V. How I wish i'd managed to hold onto that one.............
Steve Haynie Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 I have heard other people say they had tuning problems with early Hamers. Not all of them, just some of them.
bubs_42 Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 I've never had a problem with the 7 that I have owned.

Loved it - I have SN 8 0253 - looks pretty much the same. Enjoy. Cheers, Tom.

Hi Tom, yes its the same guitar. Spotted on ebay and as there seemed to be no interest I rang and haggled it down to a reasonable price. One of these days I may even get round to cleaning it ! Andrew Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 That sunburst - nice!8 0263 - BIG DOTS!From the region 8 0200-0300 they have bigger 7mm dots rather than the 5mm in all others.I don't know why, except Hamer outsourced some of their woodworking at the time - different workshop?Andrew.http://www.buddlejagarden.co.uk/hamer/001welco.htm
RichRS6 Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Thanks for the info Andrew and everyone else for all the comments.Andrews website is well worth a visit. From what you say that means Toms Burst (8 0253) must be big dots too.Probably both guitars were from the same batch sent to the U.K.I'm really loving SVL's Red 79 Burst which is looking for a new home but think I'd have a hard job justifying it to the other half at the moment.......
stevemec Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 OOPS! Sorry people... I tried to post a pic of my '78 Sunburst w/ Dan Armstrong headstock but.....No Go!!Finally!!Still got it,still for sale

FWIW - Mine always had black speed knobs. Cheers, T.

FWIW - Mine always had black speed knobs. Cheers, T.Black speed knobs are correct for the first few hundred Sunbursts. I've always suspected that these big dot Sunbursts were part of a completely separate run as they have cream rather than ivoroid binding (look closely - no grain) and usually a short off-white tip for the switch.Andrew.http://www.buddlejagarden.co.uk/hamer/guitar.htm
bondedbybrick Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I love the information Andrew provides regarding the bigger dots, creme binding, and speed knobs. A question I've always had is when did Hamer transition to the shorter headstock? The reason I ask is because my "supposed" 1978 Sunburst has no serial#(probably due to a repaint) and all the characteristics of a 78 model but has the shorter headstock....
