Taylor Player Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 If you haven't seen the sonic trainwreck that was "Jump" at the VH show in Greensboro, check this link out. If you have seen it, the link also has a great "roundtable" with a variety of musicians/techs, including Lonnie Totman, Ed's former guitar tech, dissecting the problem...although they don't agree on the cause....worth the watch/read."Fair warning", this ain't pretty:Jump Meltdown and Analysis
BCR Greg Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I'll have the truth tomorrow. I'm supposed to talk to Eddie's guy Matt Bruck tomorrow. I'll ask him.
edgar_allan_poe Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Well...how could it be the backing track when Ed's guitar is the only instrument out of tune? The Bass is right with the track, and it seems obvious that Dave was singing to the track. This one falls on Ed or his tech IMHO.
RacerX Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I saw that a few days ago. I was thinking Ed had the wrong guitar, but then he should have been able to work around being a 1/2 step off, but he didn't so who knows? If it was a "pre-recorded" playback issue, it should be noted that the bass lines were in perfect tune with the keyboard.....is Wolfy really playing? Yikes! Having said all that, some of the other clips I've seen looked pretty smokin', wish I could have gone when they hit Chicago.Mark.
atquinn Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Ugh! Well, it happens. Dave sounded pretty damn good!-Austin
unfun 75 Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 The keyboard part sounds really high to me. As soon as it started, before the guitar part, I thought it sounded wrong. I'm with RacerX on the Wolfie issue, I doubt he's really playing.
fractal Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 It actually sounded better than when I saw VH about 10 years ago. Alex was missing beats right and left, and everyone else sounded drunk....Sorry, but true. Maybe I saw a bad show?
frank_c Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 i saw some of the rehearsal pics...there's a keyboard just offstage. supposedly the guy is playing live, not triggering samples.i don't think it's a 48/44.1 hz playback issue...i think it was human error.
Dumo Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 No way. Ed. Spiteful? Vindictive? Self-destructive? Impossible! It must have been Valerie's fault.
jisham Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Jeez, who cares...shit happens. I'll let everyone know if it repeats tonight in DC!
Brentrocks Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 kinda funny...everybody has a bad day once-in-a-whileJeez, who cares...shit happens. I'll let everyone know if it repeats tonight in DC!AWESOME!!! GIVE US A REPORT!!!
Turdus Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I thought the keyboards sounded tuned up, then I saw this:"First, the original song is in the key of C. But live, they play it in C sharp, up a semitone (bands will often change the key of a song to make it easier to sing every night)"Don't most old guys, myself include, tune down to make it easier to sing?
Steve Haynie Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 It would be easy for Wolfgang to to move the bass parts off by one fret. They are not that complicated. He may have caught the synth track being off key and compensated quickly.
Guest pirateflynn Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I hope they work it out before L.A. !
zorrow Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Well, once I suddenly got my guitar out of tune AND my reference started to wobble at the same time, like if it was going through a flanger or something. In addition, it was my turn to solo and stage lights started to flash. I stupidly decided to go on --both blindly and deafly. So, after a couple of unsuccessful tries to embark on the groove, I ended playing a couple of stock licks which sounded off key too --and thus that night became one of those embarrassing stage moments you remember forever!

Kind of like being the best looking member of Twisted Sister, but none the less, it's good to know.
BillW Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 listening to it ...the guitar is messed up. If it was off by a half tone, he could have transposed ... but it was totally off, not even in tune with itself (although that could have been his attempt to tune it manually at the beginning that caused that, I suppose). Why he didn't switch to another guitar is beyond me....
frank_c Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 seen this on some VH boards..."Ed beat the shit out of his guitar, banging the neck on the stage floor during his solo. Knocked the thing clean out of tune. He didn't change guitars afterward and was shit for the last couple songs."who knows?

darc Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Dave sounded pretty damn good!Yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw the video. I was really impressed with some of the little melodies he came up with trying to chase that trainwreck around. I never realized what a good singer he is."Jump" is such a dippy tune to begin with, this is probably the most interesting version ever recorded. I'd honestly rather hear this than the studio cut - at least there are some interesting accidents.
ecnal Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 All I know is, Dm is the saddest of all keys.Nice!
