BadgerDave Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Billy Joel = Suckage. If that's true, then: John Mayer = suckage light
guitfiddler Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I have yet to see someone mention the horrors that Billy Joels parents, grandparents and other relatives experienced during the holocaust. I took my 75 yr. old mother to the Wachovia Center in Phila. several years ago to see him in concert with Elton John. It was great. I think he is as credible a musician as anyone else, more-so in fact than many others, and am asking that someone please instead, devote a thread to how pathetic and sloppy my guitar playing is, how fat and ugly I am and how badly I suck as a human being. But please put it in the Outer Circle where it belongs. Thankyou.
Craig Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 guitfiddler - I fail to see how Mr. Joels relatives horiffic experiences impact on how people view his music. We can take it to the OC, I'm game. I don't hate his music with the exception of "We didn't start the fire" bullshit. BD - that was too funny!

I have no issue with Billy Joel or his music, and most of you probably know how I feel about Elton John. I'll be in the third row in Richmond on Tuesday night, losing my voice.
BCR Greg Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Badger, you owe me a cup of coffee, I dropped mine when I read that.Elton John ROCKS. His Unplugged show was almost as cool as the Aerosmith one.Billy Joel's grandparents are not the issue here, except that they should have raised sterile children. You may be right...I may be crazy.......THWACK!!!!!!!! (sound of baseball bat hitting floor)
Stike Posted March 4, 2005 Author Posted March 4, 2005 someone please instead, devote a thread to how pathetic and sloppy my guitar playing is, how fat and ugly I am and how badly I suck as a human being. But please put it in the Outer Circle where it belongs. Thankyou. Well I could stand to lose several pounds and practice a lot more, hows that? Doesn't change the fact last weekend while out drinking with my wife and some friends in a rather empty bar that when some random preppy couple that was there started off their five bucks worth of selections with "Piano Man" I launched into an obcenity laced tirade that would make someone with severe tourets look comatose. At least it was amusing to my wife and friends. Anyway by the time "Bottle of Red" came on for the SECOND time I hadda go. Promptly walked up the street to a bar that was playing The Cult's Electric album, normalcy resumed. Why don't we rename this thread the share your Billy Joel stories?Elton John aint so bad as long as it's not being sung 20 margarita fueled chicks from the local bank branch.
Craig Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 My buddy Kevin is a professional musician, plays keyboards, piano and sings. He was doing his usual Saturday night when we were in college, and he hated having to sing Billy Joel songs. Patrons would tip him well, so he would do it. One night he looked at me and said, I finally got through a night with no Bill Joel songs. I put a 10 spot in the jar and requested piano man. He told me to fuck off. I put another 10 spot in and drunkenly said PIANO MAN!!!!! He sung it. Wouldn't talk to me for three hours afterwards, and still shakes his head to this day whenever that story comes up. (It was 12 years ago)

Dude, you're describing one of my acoustic gigs on a good night. There's NOTHING wrong with drunk chicks singing anything, especially when they dance onstage and rub up against you. We call 'em "fluffers".
elduave Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 OK, quasi Billy Joel story. I was at a Ben Folds Five show on their first tour. There where about 15 people in the crowd. Towards the end of the show I yelled for some Elton John. Ben Folds looked down and wagged his finger at me or somethin'. After the show I was like, "what's up with that?" He said that he thought I said Billy Joel Piano Man and that he always calls for security to remove anyone who yells out Piano Man. He said Elton John was cool. He actually covered Tiny Dancer recently. Hey CM, I'm thinking with carlos on keys, we should do Love Lies Bleeding...

Hamerica Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Stike, I agree I wouldn't want to hear the same Billy Joel song five times in a row, but am I the only one that likes Billy Joel? "We Didn't Start the Fire" is actually one of my favorites of his Pop songs, "Emimen Lite." I used it to get my youngest son to work on a history project that required timelines. It worked, he got an A. Elton doesn't do it for me anymore. I'm Still Standing was about the last of his work I really paid attention too. I rather listen to Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck on Infatuation. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Honky Cheatu (sp) = greatness. To me, he seems to be stuck somewhere between the death of Diana and The Lion King. Saw him the other night on Leno and I changed the channel before he was through.
