Ranger Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Lately I really enjoy rocking out with cool DVDs of great shows. The best recent was Jake's Leg's 30th Anny show in St. Louis. (Jake's is a Dead+ cover band in my home town of St. Louis; I saw them 4-6x/month for years in the 80's, my early Dead days.) Other really fun shows I've picked up are REM Perfect Square; Los Lonley Boys in Austin; Sheryl Crow, C'mon America; and Neville Bros, Tell It Like It Is. (YES, In The Round kinda sucks, but I saw them both times they came thru St. Louis that year.) My next buy will likely be a '79 ELP show that's out there now, I also saw them in '79 and they were simply amazing. But, what would you recommend and why? I'm open minded, my "top shelf" CD's range from Benny Goodman to Cash to U2 to LOTS of WSPanic and a whole shelf of just Dead. So, what would you suggest I add to my collection? Why?THANKS!!!!
Willie G. Moseley Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 One good key to a DVD concert is how it sounds if you dub the audio to a CD or cassette; does it still impress you without visuals?Such a notion might rule out Pink Floyd's P.U.L.S.E. video because even though it is visually stunning, the song selections and music's not particularly distinguished from MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON, but P.U.L.S.E. has slightly better fidelity, IMO. Also check out:'SYMPHONIC YES'DIRE STRAITS: ON THE NIGHTTHE STEVE MORRIS BAND: LIVE IN BADEN-BADEN 1990JUDAS PRIEST: 'PRIEST LIVE' (has "Green Manalishi", which ain't on the album)STYX LIVE W/ THE CONTEMPORARY YOUTH ORCHESTRA OF CLEVELAND: 'ONE WITH EVERYTHING'KING CRIMSON: 'NEAL AND JACK AND ME' (live in Japan '84 and Frejus '82)MOTORHEAD: 25 & ALIVE/BONESHAKERRUSH: R30IAN HUNTER: STRINGS ATTACHEDWISHBONE ASH: ALMIGHTY BLUES/LIVE AND BEYONDA lot of the LIVE AT MONTREAUX series is worth checking out (Dixie Dregs, Rory Gallagher, etc.)As to 'why', they're all professional performed w/ great audio; the Yes, Styx and Ian Hunter efforts are with orchestras, therefore unique. The Steve Morris effort has Dave Larue on bass, IIRC. King Crimson's early '80s incarnation was innovative, and in recent times it was back to the same foursome (the Japan '84 concert was on MTV back then).
kenjones Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 If you liked REM's "Perfect Square" you need to check out "Tourfilm". It is hands down my favorite concert DVD.
belgian Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I do have a lot of concert DVD's in my shop and Los Lobos : Live at the Fillmore, (2004) is my all time favourite.
MCChris Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Rage Against the Machine, Live at the Grand Olympic Ballroom. Staged during the 2000 Democratic National Convention, so Zach was especially salty that night. It was also their last show, I believe. Band is on fire, crowd is jacked up beyond belief. You can literally feel the energy through your TV. They do a cover of MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" and also a tune with Cypress Hill. Highly recommended.
belgian Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Another one I find amazing is the Gov't mule DVD in the Deepest end package. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deepest_E...Live_In_Concert
Jones Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I have always had a fondness for U2's "Rattle and Hum. Sure it has it's cheesy parts (Graceland), but there is nothing like seeing a great band at the top of their game.I also enjoy Green Day's "Bullet In A Bible", although it suffers from MTV type editing.
GusS Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 The Up in Smoke Tourhttp://www.amazon.com/Up-Smoke-Tour-Kaarin...d/dp/B0000524DX
Dumo Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Bob Mould Band-"Circle of Friends"-Husker Du, Sugar and Solo material from all eras, insanely good sound mix and quality multi camera work. Best live concert I've ever seen him do in 25 years. His band has Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty on skins too. Can't wait to see them in a couple months. It's on Netflix for rental too. Rock on...
Navigator Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I really enjoy Paul McCartney's "Back in the US" DVD. I'm just a huge Beatles and McCartney fan. His current band is excellent and fun on stage. Plus his lead guitarist Rusty Anderson is great, just ripping through his Divided by 13 amps (good way to hear those). In general, McCartney plays a ton of great Beatles tunes and some of his best solo stuff, and the band really rocks them up. McCartney's voice is also in surprisingly good form (given his age). There's also his "The Space Within US" DVD which is a bit more recent. It's of similar quality and is worth having in that there are enough differences in song listings (I dig the versions of "Drive My Car" and "I've Got a Feeling" on "The Space..." in particular) between the two.I can also recommend the Derek Trucks Band's "Songlines Live" ("Songlines" itself is a great album). Also Gov't Mule "A Tail of 2 Cities." I haven't made it through the 5 hours of this one just yet, but what I've seen looks and sounds great.

alantigold Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Another vote for SRV at El Mocambo, and Rush's R30.I'll go w/Queen On Fire At The Bowl w/the caveat that I have not yet watched the Montreal DVD I got for Christmas, but the Montreal includes their Live Aid performance (I already have the Live Aid DVDs), and Queen OWNED Live Aid.I'll add these in no particular order:The Bears - Live At Club CafeKing Crimson - Eyes Wide OpenDevo - Live In The Land Of The Rising Son (awesome)Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (awesome again)Concert For George (the full concert disc, minus the Indian music)Damn Yankees - Uprising (would be better if it was the straight concert w/the interview stuff outside the show)Kissology Vol. 1 - especially if you can see the Largo show bonus discFlaming Lips - UFOs At The ZooQueensryche - LivecrimeJill Sobule - Live In Pittsburghand especiallyFrank Zappa - Does Humor Belong In Music?Frank Zappa - Baby SnakesI wish Dire Straits' "Live Alchemy" would see a DVD release, though.Alan

lesterpaul Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 yes.... Govt Mule dvd is fantastic...also check out anything by NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS-can't recall the exact title, but it is a concert in Maine, I believe-Luther and company are jam meisters-and , just for the hell of it, order Paul Gilbert's dvd instructional vid"Get Out of My Yard"-jaw dropping technique showered with incredible enthusiasm and humor-you just want to hang out with the freak o' nature-I love the last credit that rolls at the end- "learn chords, too!"
DavidE Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 I just pickred this one up today:James Taylor One Man Band. True musical brilliance. He kicks with a band, but this is even better.
Ethan Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 bouncing souls-do you remember?it's really a documentary dvd with a bonus disc of just about every song they'd recorded up to that point played live, but its a great package. I know there might not be many fans on this board of this band, but the bouncing souls changed my life!
elduave Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Seeing as you like the Dead and WSP, I'd reccomend Black Crowes Into The Fog Freak N Roll, and Chris & Rich Robinson Brothers Of A Feather. Not really "great" DVD's per se, but I think you'll dig the music.
Matt Mattson Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Another vote for SRV at El Mocambo, and Rush's R30.I'll go w/Queen On Fire At The Bowl w/the caveat that I have not yet watched the Montreal DVD I got for Christmas, but the Montreal includes their Live Aid performance (I already have the Live Aid DVDs), and Queen OWNED Live Aid.I'll add these in no particular order:The Bears - Live At Club CafeKing Crimson - Eyes Wide OpenDevo - Live In The Land Of The Rising Son (awesome)Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (awesome again)Concert For George (the full concert disc, minus the Indian music)Damn Yankees - Uprising (would be better if it was the straight concert w/the interview stuff outside the show)Kissology Vol. 1 - especially if you can see the Largo show bonus discFlaming Lips - UFOs At The ZooQueensryche - LivecrimeJill Sobule - Live In Pittsburghand especiallyFrank Zappa - Does Humor Belong In Music?Frank Zappa - Baby SnakesI wish Dire Straits' "Live Alchemy" would see a DVD release, though.AlanLive at Wembley Stadium smokes Montreal (for Queen).I forgot to mention "Crossroads" (Clapton guitar festival) -- for seeing and playing along in all different styles this two disc set is great.
Zipper Neck Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Am I too late?Incubus - Alive at the Red RocksFoo Fighters - Skin and BonesGorillaz - Live at the Manchester Opera House (my very favorite concert DVD)Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live at Slane Castle
NeilZ Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Thomas Blug Band - Live in Raalte, NLJack Johnson and Friends - A Week At The Greek Rush - In RioHow's that for eclectic?
seeker Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 I know it's not geeky and pretty mainstream, but the Led Zeppelin DVD set is just an awesome chronicle.
Travis Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 A few of my favorites include:Dream Theater: Live Scenes From a Memory, Live at Budokan, Score, and When Day and Dream Reunite. I thought the DVD release of Live at the Marquee and 5 Years in a Live Time was a little weak. Enjoyable, but I thought the sound mix wasn't as good as their later releases.G3: Live in Denver and Live in Tokyo. These two floored me more so than the first G3 with Satch, Vai and Eric Johnson. Even though I was at the concert they recorded for 99% of the cd in 1996, the later two just got me.Steve Vai: Live at the Astoria. Some of the camera work is a little goofy, and Vai gets a little dorky with his stories and the fan blowing his hair. But the concert itself is jaw dropping with a great sound mix.
