Stokesdead Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 OK so Im going to have my special refretted. What is Hamer using currently? What would have been original? I think I am going to go with what Hamer uses currently which I believe is Dunlop 6100. Is this correct and if so what would be the equivalent if ordering through StewMac or AllParts. What is the consensus among the Hamer FANatics? Thanks,Chris Stokes
silentman Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 Hamer does not put 6100 wire on their stuff unless to custom order it. Hamers standard wire is nowhere near as tall or wide as 6100. Go with what you like.
Stokesdead Posted March 12, 2008 Author Posted March 12, 2008 I don't really know what I like though lol. I liked the frets on my 2001 studio really well. What were they? anyone know?

Stokesdead Posted March 12, 2008 Author Posted March 12, 2008 thank you pirate. Search function is a wonderful thing.....duh
Wizard333 Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 They use a .050 by .100, there are a number of wires close to this and you wouldnt feel a few thousandths since 1) fretwire is not consistent anyway, it varies by a few thousandths along its length 2) It loses some height in the crowning/leveling process. My first reaction to your question is "whatever wire you like most" since there is little collector's value there, use what you like and call it a day. If you wan't to keep it close for whatever reason, Stew Mac sells a wire exactly that size, but what I'd really recommend is going with a stainless wire in a close size. I had my '93 FM Special refretted with .047x.098 stainless and its great, plus I'll never have to do anything to the frets again (assuming the neck itself doesnt develop problems) because stainless will never wear much unless you insist on playing rusty strings.
