Jimbilly Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I've been working late quite a bit, pandora.com and headphones is a good motivator, I've been listening to Lordi (Finland, Iceland?), which is mostly really pretty cool (especially tracks like Monsterman and Deadlite Girls), as is a lot of the other stuff that comes up on 'lordi radio', but the two I just can't stomach are Dragonforce, and Alestorm. DragonForce just gets way-way too fast and tight, 32nd notes just pounding and pounding, like a woodpecker stabbing at my head. Alestorm was intersting for about 2 minutes, 'pirate rock' is just not meant to be IMO.
BubbaVO Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 After a point, all that "intensity" becomes an exercise in comedy.
Hardrockracer Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 The most irritating (extreme death) metal band is Braindrill. A friend played that to me and I couldn't believe it. That stuff sounds like you are watching NHRA on ESPN and the Top Fuel Dragsters roll to the start line but at 150 db. Tooo much for me ole 70/80s Hardrocker.HRR
Jones Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I bought the Bullet For My Valentine album after hearing the single "Hearts Burst Into Fire". Damn good song, and great playing on the album, but I ain't a Cookie Monster guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_GJyUK0GUI
anotherfreak Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 any of them that have a singer, I am all for instrumental/prog stuff and the like. When they start singing I usually start giggling, sometimes it's the content sometimes it's the voice, but it it so hard to take a lot of it seriously.then again I'm still stuck on grant green
generic Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Cradle of Filth. Or any black metal, for that matter. I like dark metal, but black is waaaay too screechy for me.
Willie G. Moseley Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Just about any group in the so-called grindcore/death metal sub-genre (I do not know what "black metal" is). The "singer" for Morbid Asshole...er, Morbid Angel fits the "Cookie Monster vocals" based on what I heard some 15 years ago (one song, and that was enough). Opeth did a live DVD which was split into two types of music, and the second part was more Cookie Monster schlock. Some of the Valkyrie-style vocals are irritating as well. King Diamond comes to mind. All too many metal bands, regardless of sub-genre, seem to end up parodying themselves, y'know? And any self-parody is indeed as irritating as the band's original intent...except the self-parody is validation and all too obvious.

kevinT Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I can't believe nobody's said Grim Reaper. ... They were cool back in the day.

rooster69f Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Any of them with cookie monster vocals.Actually, my 14 year old has taught me that the correct term for this is "screamo", and that about says it. I've taken her to a few shows and always have mixed feelings. For one thing, most of these bands have amazing drummers. These guys can pound forever. Most bands would kill for someone like these guys. And occasionally you will find some damn good axe players too. But the vocals just wear you out. I've come to understand it, though. It is just a part of being young and rowdy. They can't drink any more (for the most part), so they blow off steam this way.SO.... here I am, driving her home from one of these shows, kidding her about the vocals and telling her it won't last.... BUT ... on the radio is "Won't Get Fooled Again." And as Roger Daltry screams "Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!" at the end over Pete's windmill chords, she just kinda looks at me and says "Yeah, right."Hope I die before I get old....
jettster Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I can't believe nobody's said Grim Reaper. I was just listening to the "Rock you to hell" CD the other day, thinking that guy has some pretty ripping vocals. (F'd up looking though)
tommy p Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 I can't believe nobody's said Grim Reaper.See you in Hell, my friendSee you in Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllll!!!!!!!!!!!(Em meedly meedly meedly)
Jimbilly Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 I do sound occasionally for some metal and screamo bands, these are high school kids, and several of the bands are quite good. Screamo is tough though, thank God for compressors, in this one band the kid tries to sing (with whats left of his voice) then goes to screamo, back and forth, -I try to get the singing up loud enough to be heard, then 'WHOAH' -bring the slider way down for the screamo. I also bring headphones so it looks like I'm really concentrating, but it's just so I can give my ears a break. I really do my best to get them to sound good, but the guitar players with the 5150 half stacks can't seem to understand that they can overpower the whole (relatively small) PA, as can the drummer (it's usually the bass player that has the small PV combo with a 15). Then their fan who stands up front square between the mains complains that she can't hear the vocals -I could go on and on...
zorrow Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 +1 on Dragonforce Trivium too. Yeah, +1 on those... Visibly modern metal is making its job of irritating older generations.
