How does Hamer compare to PRS, your opinion

Mine isn't snooty - late '90s, no 10 top, no birds. Its a great utility guitar - much more versatile than a twin humbucker Hamer, and it stays in tune when I whammy. I like my old Phantoms better (talk about apples and oranges), but the PRS works better for the stuff we play than any of the Studios I have owned.

I played with some friends a few weeks ago, and took a Phantom and the PRS. I played the Phantom for the first set. I met a guitarist on the break, and the first thing he said to me was " Wow- you must really love that Hamer, if you are leaving that PRS on its stand." Yep, I do..

I think the "heel from hell" bashing is much ado about nothing. I will give PRS this: they did something right, there wasn't a single dead spot on the neck of my old CU24. They are beautiful guitars, with the best trems I have ever tried, and they take a beating. But once I tried a 25th Ann., with a price tag of $850, and then came home to play my $1600 PRS, I knew I had to sell the PRS. the Hamer just had more personality and soul. Diff'rent strokes.

I personally dont care too much for the PRS line. I dont find anything special about them and the neck heel is ridiculous when compared to Hamer construction. Any oppinions here?

I love my PRS guitars as much as my Hamers. I have 3 Custom 24's, one "pre heel" and the other two "heels." The "heels" are much nicer guitars.

The entire "heel" issue has been done to death here...sorry, it makes aboslutely no difference. Well, I shouldn't say that. Ed Roman will charge you upwards of $1000 more for a smaller heel. You know, it's "more collectable."

It never ceases to amaze me how many people rip on Ed Roman, yet take every bit of sales hype he posts on his site as gospel.

I have 1 prs Cu24. It's nice but I can't seem to bond with it.

I have been looking at Swamp ash specials lately though.

Unless I can get Hamer to do a ash bodied studio with a h/s/h config and a maple set neck. ;)

HOLY SH*T!!!!! A CU42!! How the hell do you play that thing? Can you get your fingers on those tiny frets? I played a Virt with 36 frets...but 42??!! I'll bet that kicks ass.... :D;);):D;):D

I guess the heel stuff is news to me since I never dwelt on it. I have played the guitars and it I find it a clumsy feature and it kind of looks cheap to my eyes. Mind you I have not spent a lot of time with them but again they might be great guitars but I cant say they float my boat.

I also dont care to much for the neck. I remember when Jackson was "It". I loved the construction but that wide flat neck didnt work for me but they were great guitars. Same with the old Deans. They made a great guitar in the 80s, that damn "V" back thing was not my gig either.

I really loved the old US made BC Richs....but I couldnt afford one when they were "affordable", now they are out there.

It all comes down to personal preference. Hamers and PRSi are both wonderful guitars! I personally bond more with a PRS because the neck and fretboard radius works with me better than the Hamer but I still love Hamers.

sounds like an Ibanez Artist Professional. 2617 or Bob Weir would fit that, but no middle SC.

I've been playing PRSi since 93 when I discovered them accidentally (trying out a wah). Anyway, I've owned a lot of different models/years, and I think that lately, their production guitars have no individuallity or character. They have mastered mass producing a superior quality guitar, but they just don't have that mojo in them anymore. In contrast, I found that older Hamers didn't have as much character as the recent ones. The newer ones all seem to have a lot of individuality, and liveliness.

I love Hamers: the build quality, the feel, the tone, and the vibe.

I've fallen in love with PRS for the same reason.

Both companies are the only I've encountered where every instrument I've taken off the store wall and played was a winner!

I recently went shopping for something that could stand toe to with my 25th Anniversary Edition.

I bought a PRS McCarty Standard. It just had a vibe!

Iteresting about the older Hamers not having character. I had a '96 Studio that I didn't really like much.....I want to try some new Hamers.

Now, I do have a few PRS guitars all post 2000 and love em to death. My favorite PRS is about 5 years old.

Your thoughts give me hope on a new Hamer Monaco Elite! Out with the old - in with the new.

If it hasn't been mentioned already...

Guitar Player just put out a special issue

on PRS featuring, the early days, rare factory

pics, interviews etc.

Even if you aren't a fan it's really good

read. Barnes and Noble for one has them...

The one thing that elevates PRS in my eyes is the scale length. I LOVE the 25" scale! Yes, I can feel the difference, and I "think" I can hear it.

Anyway, my custom build (which isn't near completion yet) will have a 25" scale.

While I don't own one, I have to tip my hat to Carvin for the same reason.

They just approved a swamp-ass body for me so I am certain they will do it.

I look forward to blabbing about another neck wood Hamer just approved after years of axeing. I wanna see it typed out first so I dont jinx it for everyone. steve
