zorrow Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 I got a set of those Planet Waves cables which have one of the ends shielded. My main rig is as follows:Guitar --> BBE Freq Booster --> Pignose Piggy-in-a-Box (preamp mode) --> Tech 21 Power Engine 60All the "-->" above are now Planet Waves cables --by the way, it's a HUGE improvement in overall sound quality and of course, in TONE.My question is: should the shielded end go at the pointy side of the arrows above (right now I have them like that: connected to the IN holes), or at the other side?Does it actually matter?TIA!
Uncle Thor's Hamer Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Yes, it matters. The idea is to prevent ground loops and to reduce hum/interference. But I can't remember for sure which end goes to the amp and which to the guitar. I think it is the amp but don't take my word for it.
Feynman Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Do you want the shielding mojo to flow into or out from your guitar? I'd prefer to channel all voodoo toward the amp.If you want that Peter Green pignose sound, though, reverse the wire between the BBE and the Piggy-in-a-Box.
DavidE Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Isn't there an indication on the plug jacket? I have a PW cable with a picture of a guitar on one end and picture of a speaker on the other to let you know which way it goes.
zorrow Posted April 6, 2009 Author Posted April 6, 2009 The shielded end should go into the amp...I guessed so, because it's the amp which is actually grounded --as well as the pedals, of course.BTW, I have to say it again: the noise is almost 100% gone (even with the Piggy-in-a-box on!) and my tone is richer than ever. I just LOVE the way my rig sounds now with these Planet Waves cables. Thanks!
HSB0531 Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Read this:http://rane.com/note151.htmlThe best RF shielding for an unbalanced guitar to amp connection would be to use a 1-pair shielded cable with the following wiring to both 1/4" plugs:Tip: white (or red) wire.Sleeve: Black wire and Shield.
