Cruise Basses - Pickups and stuff

Which pickups came supplied as standard on the 2 tek Cruise 95/96 models? I have recently got one (thats why i joined the HFC). The seller said he had removed the stock PuPs and replaced them with Fender Custom Shop PuPs.

If you have changed your pickups which ones have you chosen and why?

btw - the bass is amazing! Cruises are really difficult to get in the UK and i was fortunate to find it.

Mine came with Seymour Duncan Passive. I think the 5 strings and fretless models were active. I'll have to look up the SD # for you. I'm thinking about trying Nordstrands if I swap mine out. Nothing wrong with the stock Duncans, though.

I've had three 4-strings and a 5-string one, all with 2TEK bridges and they all had stock passive pickups. They did also come with optional active electronics but I prefer the passive ones. GREAT basses....real work horses.

Thanks guys. I am unsure which way to go. My story is that i had a pretty crappy head (Hartke HA3500) which i didn't like as i couldn't get the sound that i hear in my head. So i bought a Little Mark II and Ampeg cab but at the same time replaced the PuPs in the bass for some SD Quarter Pounders. I now have a sound a lot closer to that one in my head - quite agressive in a vintage way but punchy and fat. But now i am starting to think "hmm, i wonder what it would be like with the Fender Custom Shop PuPs...

What about these Sadowsky. I have heard about them and TB players seem to rave about them a lot. What makes them so good?

I think the stock Duncans were (or were close to) the 'Vintage Jazz.' The actives were either Basslines (same as Duncan) or EMG, though usually Duncan, I think.

The stock pickups sounded good in both era Cruises. I went to some Active Duncans (with the little switches,) that they haven't made for probably 10 years now, just for pickiness' sake, rather than a true necessity.

Great basses.

Pics?

It COULD be your Hartke. A lot of the Hartke bass amps had internal filters that ROLL OFF/CUT THE LOW END FREQUENCIES because those shit aluminum speakers they used to use could not handle the low freauencies and would blow. I always loved that design concept....rolling off the low frequencies on a bass amp, rather than change the speaker design

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Wow, you guys are quick.

The Hartke was just the head and not those suspicious looking aluminium speaker thingys. I used my Ampeg Classic cab with it but it was such a lifeless amp. Really dull. The Little Mark II is incredible and i can't imagine using anything else now.

I'll try and post some pics a bit later but gotta rush off to a gig! We are in the semi-final of some competition that started with 110 bands and is now down to the last 10.

Wish us luck.

I found a good deal on some Lollars so I stuck those in my Cruise (2TEC,'96, four string) ... it's a toss up really, The stock SD's sounded more musical ... the Lollars sound more focused with a lot less single coil noise. I need to get a better amp also. Soooo opinions could change in the future

Happy Easter.

Lollars? Do you have a URL for those?

Thanks for the URL.

Interestingly on the Seymour Duncan site they have a little section for each product that describes the genre of music that each pickup is suited to. There was no mention of funk, it was all Nu-Metal, Rock etc. I know this is subjective - i am using Quarter Pounders (recommended for Metal) and yet get a lot of great comments about my bass sound. The problem with them is that they aren't very percussive which makes it hard work to slap the buggers. I don't slap all the time but when i need to it would be good to have some PuPs that were a bit more percussive.

I'd try finding a set of the original Seymour Duncans ... they sound really good. Maybe you can find some cheap from a Cruise bass owner that changed pickups ... put up a shout out in the for sale section. Sorry, I'm keeping mine.

My '96 2-TEK has the stock Duncan Vintage set in it and it sounds fabulous. I think 2nd generation CruiseBasses are the best deal in the used bass market.

What's wrong with the first generation? I have one with the Gotoh bridge and I like it alot. Most of the 2 tek versions I've seen weigh too much for me.

Nice bass you have there:

The 2-tek Cruisebasses are noticeably heavy (I had a 5 string that was abou 11lbs) but it had the most awesome tone of any bass I've ever had.
