Sam Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 For those in the know, when did the transition from thin veneer to thicker maple cap take place?
harryjmic Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 My 97 is awesome. I'll be using it again this weekend, the best neck pu tone I have ever had, clear, never muddy and just sings, sings and sings some more, what a great guitar!
cmatthes Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 For those in the know, when did the transition from thin veneer to thicker maple cap take place?I believe it was sometime around 1999 - it was after the move to New Hartford if I recall correctly. The original 4-digit run stopped by '85, and there were a small handful of custom orders done after that and before the "reissue" in 1995. I ordered one that arrived in '91 with a veneer top, but it was a slightly thicker veneer than on other 4-digit Standards I've owned. I also bought one of the first '95s off the line, and the top was the same as on my '91.In '99, Jol mentioned that the tops on Standards were being done differently - an actual 1/4" maple top was glued on to the mahogany back and then milled down to spec. I've been playing my '08 Standard a lot lately, so it's out on a stand - I'll check that out tonight and see if I can get a better idea of the final thickness on the current ones.
BlueRedWhite Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 That's a head turning-mouth watering- incredible- out of this world- my kind of top-drooling for- guitar......i like the fact that is like looking into a pond of water..that is an amazing guitar....even if it is an explorer...but even that shape makes it shine better...hot damn...beautiful i remember some time ago that BCR got some NAMM models, i believe they were Studios...the top were similar, so beautiful, different tones of the "sea top" as i call it...it looks just incredible on this explorer Their best work is happening right now. I mean, seriously....

I left in July 2000 and the change had been in place for awhile. I believe the top thickness spec is .100" (slightly under 1/8 inch).
ScubaMarket Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 ...Please keep your dealings to the emporium or PM/emails.
BCR Greg Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Speaking of great Standards, we got this little gem made in honor of a soldier... I honestly believe that Hamer is at the top of their game.
cornjulio Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Speaking of great Standards, we got this little gem made in honor of a soldier... I honestly believe that Hamer is at the top of their game. WOW! How come this has a sustain block? I wish a had a standard with sustain block. That's gotta be a perfect guitar!!!
BCR Greg Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 - Answering the question: which do you prefer, sustainblock or tunamatic bridges? - It depends on the guitar.
sonic1974 Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 It depends on the guitar.Yeah.......I guess that's the only real way to answer an open ended question like that. You gotta try a bunch before you find your favourite one.

cmatthes Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I don't think so, Geoff - they seem to be the same to me.
BCR Greg Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 My earlier post was deleted(!), but it basically showed a newer guitar with a scarier top that any 4 digit. All of the early guitars had consistently flamed tops, whereas newer ones have an incredible variety of figures. I like scary, hate typical.
