GaryT Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 This cut happened to come on the Radio on my way to work today. And it got me thinking about this band. They may be the best "new" band of the last decade. I'm not even positive when they came out. But I somehow remember them becoming very popular around 2002-2003? The cut I remember with them is "How You Remind Me". Though this song I really like though..............http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1yQsrNiYSw "Saving Me"But I also find that after one or two ballads I loose interest in them? How about you guys? I can name a Half-Dozen ballads by them I think are very good. But yet I just loose interest in them too fast. I'm not understanding myself when it comes to them [Nickleback]. So I thought I'd.........SEE WHAT YOU THINK?
sonic1974 Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I can hardly stand to get through one Nickleback song, can't even imagine listening to a full album. The funny thing about them, is they sell so many records, but I don't think ever met anyone who listens to them. They are very "generic" sounding. I think this might appeal to people that don't really pay that much attention to music, they don't really notice how mediocre they are. Also, sadly, they are Canadian, but please don't take them as an example of our musical talents, there are plenty way better bands up here! ha ha
murkat Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 " Nickleback?, Whats do you all think of Nickleback? "I try not too.
lord nelson Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Nickleback is rock meant for people who don't like rock.
Stike Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Also, sadly, they are Canadian, but please don't take them as an example of our musical talents, there are plenty way better bands up here! ha haI can't believe NB had the stones to let Danko Jones open for them one tour. I can only imagine the ass kicking NB got every night.I don't like Nickleback and most other post grunge Creed-ish bands.
polara Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Not my thing... sonically and lyrically they seem to be designed to deliver standard-issue radio rock that touches all the normal buttons. Might be nice guys and they play their instruments perfectly well. Gotta say that there have been an awful lot of bands in the last ten years that have either rocked harder, been more innovative, or written more interesting songs... I do think they may be "best" rock band n terms of moving CDs though.
JGale Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I'm as dissapointed as Joe Namath's Dad. All that money invested and he only only a quarterback!
Thundernotes Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I'm with Polara - not really my thing, but OK in a homogenized pop rock formula sort of way. Here's the L/R split of two very similar songshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2pXfAK8r1k&NR=1
backinit Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Although I do want to cover "Rockstar", I can only handle a song or 2 from this band.
GaryT Posted December 29, 2009 Author Posted December 29, 2009 Yea, so I guess that feeling is pretty much the same for most of us then.
lesterpaul Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 agree with Polara-its like rock with the Nashville polish..the "Big and Rich" of the radio modern rock world??give me some Clutch any day
Hamer Time Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 They're not the best band ever but I don't understand all the hate for them, it's like they're the band everyone loves to hate. There is a lot worse out there that sell lots of records, any hair band from the eighties for example. Worse band ever? KISS. Yet they're worshiped like they invented rawk'n'roll. And they looked like crap, cartoons. How can anyone take them seriously?
MCChris Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 They're not the best band ever but I don't understand all the hate for them, it's like they're the band everyone loves to hate.I'll contend that a lot of it boils down to a jealousy thing ("why are THEY making all that cash when my band/this other band is just as good if not better?") and a disdain for their fan base ("only a douchebag would be really into Nickelback."). I'll plead guilty on both counts. Chad Kroeger also has a habit of coming off as extremely creepy when he's trying to be sexy (for example, the lyrics to "Animals," "Figured You Out" and "Something In Your Mouth").I will say that I enjoy the song "Someday" and Kroeger has by far the coolest crib I've ever seen on "Cribs."
elduave Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 My theory is that dude's original hair-do blew it for them.
polara Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Not jealousy. Resentment. We all get pissed off when the masses ignore Hamer in favor of more mainstream brands. Not really different from being resentful that Nickelback, a solid but really mass-marketed "all things to all people" band sells millions while {insert your favorite band here} is unappreciated.

Why should you be pissed?Just saying....

I'm not a large KISS fan either though I do think they are a very talanted band. Make-Up,.... never was into it. I'm just commenting. Your certainly welcome to throw my opinion right out the window. It, and a dollar won't get you coffee in the morning. Definatly don't let it upset your emotions. I listen and play Blues and Blues-Rock, and I often go back to the Delta Blues and Jazz like John Coltrane. Lot of guys here think I should give that a F88King break already? But it doesn't stop me from playing or listening to it. Its what speaks to me? Thats all their is to it. If Nickleback speaks to you and you feel that passionatly about them? By all means continue to listen to them. I get them, I hear that tricky little lyrical thing they seem to have going on here and there. I could tell you this. Whoever is writting the lyrics is good at it. He sems to continue to come up with a winning formula. But MUSICALLY? I'd rather listen to KISS!
jisham Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I've seen NB live several times and always thought they were a great band and I enjoyed seeing them. All these shows were also totally sold out so other than a bunch of guitarists on internet forums who seem to bitch non stop about them, they're doing something right. They sell a shit load of CDs and I'm sure they make serious cash touring so I say good for them as I wish it was me.

I haven't seen them live, but I rented all their CDs here in Japan (one year after a CD is released, it's rentable here) and ripped 'em to my Mac. As others have said, they have a sort of formula and they're very good at what they do. Although I'm mostly in Jaye's camp on this one, I also have a little of McChris's voice speaking to me. YMMV. One more thing I just realized...I like Nickelback AND John Mayer . (note to self: avoid HFC gatherings or I will get beat up).
