Turdus Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I'm a huge fan of early Doobies.Came across this cool video. You've heard the song a million times. But pay attention for the last 3 seconds of the video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuGWehnNAsEThe dry ice is cool too. Be cooler if the vid ran a few extra seconds.
cmatthes Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 "But Rerun - I thought you guys were our friends ... how could you do this to us?"I saw them on their first "Farewell Tour" in '82. There were no flashpots, but there sure was a LOT of smoke in the Spectrum.
GaryT Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 Big around 73-74. Listen to the Music, The Captain and Me, Black Water. Oh ya they were right there with the Southern Rock movement.Sounded very good live as did most of the Southern Rock Bands. But the Doobies and Marshall Tucker may have been as close to the recordings as I've ever heard.
santellavision Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 We do that song live and it always gets 'em going.

And just when you thought it could not get any worse, Skunk Baxter shows up.

Turdus Posted February 21, 2010 Author Posted February 21, 2010 And then Michael McDonald came along and tore the rock n roll heart out of the band. And just when you thought it could not get any worse, Skunk Baxter shows up. Exactly.. but I think Skunk showed up first. In my opinion, they needed him probably about as much as the Eagles needed Joe Walsh. If you've got another 8 minutes to waste, this is another good one. Raw. I had no idea that the bass player sang the lead on Road Angel. When this video was shot, they already had several big hits, yet they act (and sound) like a hyped up, on fire, garage band. That's meant as a compliment. They're rockin' for sure.
Mitch Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 ...this is another good one. Hi Turdus - I couldn't help notice the obvious... that Skunk was standing during that video from '75. By the time I saw the Doobies in '76 or '77, he was already seated. At the time, that didn't strike me as exactly guitar heroic.Did he develop a physical condition that put him on that stool or was it his "idiom"?
Citrus Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Love the BC Rich Seagull in that last video - my favorite guitar - EVAH !!!
DavidE Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Anybody here familiar with campus evangelist Jed Smock and his story of Jed Smock vs. The Doobie Brothers?http://www.gospeltruth.net/whowillriseup.htm

GaryT Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Steely Dan......I hear you!BTW I caught Brother Jed, not in person but on TV preaching Live at Arizona State. He's at ASU often, must be a LOT of Gods work to be done their?Hes good but I also thought he was seriously provoking.

This definitely brought a smile to my face, remembering the fire and brimstone condemnations of the fornicators. Thanks for the link David. And thanks for all the cool Doobies links.

I was at the U of I at Urbana during the mid 80s and we had a guy on the quad doing the same thing. Wonder if it was the same guy. I'm surprised the fire and brimstone approach ever worked. But then again, the stick never works with me. I'm much more of a carrot kind of guy.
Willie G. Moseley Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 At one point back then, Baxter was hobbled up; I recall the Doobies made an appearance on "What's Happenin'" and Baxter had a cane. 'Splains why he was sitting down. Dunno what the injury/condition was.One of the coolest duets I've ever heard was Skunk and Johnny A. doing "Apache" in the opening set of the first James Burton concert. There's an interview w/ A. coming out in Vintage Guitar soon; he's got a new live CD/DVD coming out in March that is very impressive.
cmatthes Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 I think that cane was so's he could administer a whoopin' to Al Dunbar and his brother Bruno who coerced Rerun, Raj and Dwayne (Hay Hey Hay!) into bootlegging that show. Boy, did those kids fix those bad dudes' wagon when all you could hear on the tape was Rerun eating popcorn... Somehow, they got led out of the Soda Shoppe in cuffs anyway.
