viking death metal?

I like the song in the first video better. The music is great, but the Cookie Monster vocals throw it off for me. However, the two songs are good. I may have to make an exception for this band's singer.

thats what i was thinking to

Music was pretty catchy, but the vocals are pretty horrible. I'm not a fan of the cookie monster thing, but the fact that the lyrics are so understandable makes it even worse :) Also, the head banging made me think of:

Watched the first one: how many packs (cartons?) of Camel No-Filters do you have to smoke to be able to sing like that?! OTOH, thought the synchronized hair spinning was spot on! Confused about the dude on the throne squeezing that dark substance between the fingers in his fist (poo?). :)

Music was cool though.

I actually love stuff like this from a rhythm standpoint - this style of metal drumming is killer.

And I'm amazed at how clear his diction is, given the cookie monster thing.

If these guys had a Maynard James Keenan/ or even a Bruce Dickinson-type singer I'd like them a whole lot.

Actually, singing like that is a skill that can be mastered by anyone that puts in the time. From what I understand the actual volume they're singing at is very low (like Brian Johnson in AC/DC).

Heh, Amon Amarth is one of my favorite metal acts - they are equally as tight and, umm, barbaric live. I am a pretty big fan of European metal, not many American acts - there is a larger movement of bands in this style, which is usually tagged "Pagan Metal". There are folk based metal acts like Eluveitie and Finntroll for those who are kind of put off by this level of Cookie Monster.

The vocal technique is not easy, and smoking is a detriment (though countless metal singers do so). It's certainly an acquired taste, but I can actually pick out most words when I listen...

They are from Stockholm Sweden. I'm not into this kind of music, but it's cool that the have fans around the globe. The real vikings were som tough bastards, so I guess music that takes influences from them must be hard. May the true Gods of Valhalla be with them!

Thanks! --I confess I like them. :) A guilty pleasure, I guess. :P

If you like that then listen to the drumming on this - the bass drum work is insane:

that bass is exactly the same as my 85 G&L :)

I thought everyone from Sweden loved melodic death metal :)

I knew they were from Sweden, I wasn't aware it was Stockholm (though if I HAD to guess, I suppose it would be close to the top). They tour A LOT, which is true of many metal acts overseas - and Hel knows that some of our best make their cash in Europe (Iced Earth, I'm looking at you).

Sweden produces a lot of fine metal, Norway produces a lot of creepy musicians (Varg alone takes the cake), and Finland somehow conjures up shredders and metal squeeze boxers... What's going on over there in the northlands, is it something in the water? If so, can I have some?

The singer's Sweedish accent throws it off for me....reminds me of Abba :)

But seriously, the music is OK and melodic but I'd prefer more of a singer wihout the Cookie Monster vox, or at least one who switched between that and real vox.

Some shampoo company REALLY needs to tap into the four guys twirling their hair in unison thing. I think it could be a funny TV commercial for the biker/metal market.

I like this a lot better.

Sounds like Queens of the Stone Age doing

"School's Out" by Alice Cooper.....

I guess it all comes down to the fact that white men simply don't dance.

The music is secondary, it's the actual video that you need to watch.

I'm a big fan of Amon Amarth.

I agree regarding the drumming--I've seen them and the skill and stamina on the kick is unreal.

Check out their touring schedule sometime and look at how few nights off they have on a tour--absolutely viking!

If you want to get into the viking thing you need to get HAMMERHEART by BATHORY.

Quorthon (RIP) was the real deal. Invented Black Metal and Viking Metal in the 80s!

So, you are a big fan, right? Ok, now please recommend me their best two albums. I dig their melodic death metal side. I'm heavily into Arch Enemy and Carcass, and like a lot Dark Tranquility and In Flames, so... :)

Well, you didn't ask me... but I can't resist:

I'm very fond of "Once Sent From the Golden Hall", it does reek of that Bathory battle-viking vibe (which I think is quite enjoyable)... The second is harder, "Versus The World" perhaps?
