bubs_42 Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 One SD i've never tried and would like too. Is it really like a bigger badder 59?
atquinn Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Eh. I prefer the Custom Custom, Custom, and Custom 8 honestly. The Custom 5 was fine, but it just didn't have the "personality" of the other Customs for me (at least in the guitar I tried it in). -Austin
formula73 Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 So far, my fave has been the Custom. The jury is still out on the 8, but I'm getting it dialed in.
bubs_42 Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 The Custom is a pickup that I have kept coming back too in the past. I have had some older ones that sound great in certain guitars but that pickup to me only sounds good on 10. I believe that when I sold my Lightburst 79 I had a Duncan Custom in the bridge and a Pearly Gates in the neck. Raunchy tone that was, very, Get out of my way I'm coming through!I love the 59 and the JB but I am looking for a bridge pup somewhere in the middle.
Armitage Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I really like Gibson's 498T, and when pulling out a set of Burst Bucker Pros, I wanted something similar to the 498T, but not exactly the same as I had a couple guitars already with them... so I got a Custom 5... the two are Alnico 5 mags with 14.4 winds... and I can't tell them apart in a pair of Les Pauls (of course I'm not saying others can't). Plenty of "aunch."The Custom 5 sounds closer to a JB (though not as peaky) then to a '59 to me... while the original Custom is much more like a hotter '59.It's funny, I never find Duncan's "EQ B/M/T" settings very helpful, but their "Resonant Peak" tells me a lot. I guess it's like comparing which has more effect on your tone; your wah or slight changes of your amp's bass/treble controls.
shredmeister Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I have a Custom 5 - actually a TB-5 which stands for Trembucker cause it is F spaced for a Floyd. It is a fine pick up. Good growl. Good harmonics. Not too hot. All in all I think it is one of the best in it's price range. The best feature IMO is that you can turn the volume down a bit - between 7 - 9 and the pick up cleans up and becomes more dynamic. A cool feature if you know how to take advantage of it.
crunchee Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I have a Custom 5 - actually a TB-5 which stands for Trembucker cause it is F spaced for a Floyd.I thought 'F spaced' meant string/pole spacing for a Fender-width bridge HB pickup. From what I've seen, a 'normal' spaced HB does fine in the neck position (many a Tele has this as a mod), but they're a little too narrow for a Fender bridge--the poles don't quite line up with the strings at the bridge. Correct me if I'm wrong, I've never needed to get a 'F spaced' HB.

The Custom 5 is a TB-14 (at least according to the duncan website anyway). I like the Custom (and CC) pickup, undecided on the Custom 5's.
shredmeister Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Yeah you are correct on the TB5. I was told by the pick up guy I purchased from that it was the F spaced version of the Custom 5.It is hotter than the Custom 5 according to the website.A great pick up in their line IMO (TB-5 that is). Also those old original Dimebuckers - some of those old ones are killer pick ups. The new ones don't sound as good. The old ones had more dynamics. With regards to the F spacing - a regular sized pup will work with a Floyd with no loss of sound. But the pole pieces don't line up perfectly with the spacing at the bridge. They still work fine though.
LordOfTheThighs Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 I hung a Custom 5 in the LOTT - Feynman - gwayne - Feynman - etc etc Standard Custom.I liked it. I think I also hung one in my old Mockingbird, although I never really liked the way the guitar sounded.Probably not the pickups fault. I think it was the tone sucking Floyd Rose. LOL
livewire Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 I have a custom5 tb-14 in this NOS parts guitar I just built. I like it, but do have the a8 mag sitting here to try out. Mahogany body, ebony board and maple neck. Pole pieces line up great with an OFR. Dark pic, it was late..
