gi_zuk Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Van Halen's cover of You're No Good.I think Linda Ronstadt owns that one!
Willie G. Moseley Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 RE: "You're No Good"---to me, the definitive cover version was done by Potliquor.
Scottcrud Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Forgot about Jacob Moons cover of Rush's Subdivisions... and
woodpile Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Cream's Crossroads SNL's / Don't Fear the Reaper .
serial Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Kiss' version of 2000 Man was the first one that came to mind. Others:Ace Frehley's "New York Groove"Cheap Trick's "California Man"Van Halen on "Pretty Woman", "Where Have All the Good Times Gone", etc.Agreed with Patty Smith on "Because The Night"There are tons more.
The Shark Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Van Halen's cover of You're No Good.I think Linda Ronstadt owns that one!I'll vote for VH.

alantig Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 "I've Done Everything For You" - Rick Springfield cover, Sammy Hagar original +1 on Zappa's take on "Stairway", and I'll toss in the unreleased "I Am The Walrus" and Jimmy Swaggart/Beatles medley - Texas Motel (Norwegian Wood)/Louisiana Hooker With Herpes (Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds)/Texas Motel (Strawberry Fields Forever). Walrus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVF66GVj8zU Medley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y59k7AX9AKM "Staying Alive" - Dweezil Zappa w/Ozzy (officially released with Donny Osmond". Michael Hedges' unreleased cover of the Stones' "No Expectations". Alan
Ted Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Gotta go with Cheap Trick's "Aint that a Shame"Also, a band called Gunn did a KILLER remake of "Word Up".Maybe not better than the original, but I've always enjoyed The Lemonheads version of "Mrs. Robinson"...+1 to The Lemonheads.
Ted Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 I wouldn't say that Silverchair's version of "Kick out The Jams" is better than the MC5s, I just really like it:
humfree Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Forgot about Jeff Beck's version of the Beatles' 'A Day in the Life'!
psc3251 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 +1 on the cover of "Word Up" by Scottish band Gun OH- yeh......heavy !!! Love VH's covers- "Pretty Woman" etc- all great..... OR Just because it's Gary Moore and he was a god- Friday on my Mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJl2crJ5ULU OR Rough Cutt- Piece of My Heart...Paul Shortino has a brilliant voice. Feynman Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Hurra Torpedo's "Total Eclipse Of The Heart". WHOA!
LefThanDed Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Quincy Jones, Ray Charles & Chaka Khan - I'll Be Good To You(cover of Brothers Johnson original)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-Lh67nPMVQ&NR=1
Turdus Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Moog Cookbook's "Hotel California" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmQQN9lrezk I believe that is the keyboard player from Jellyfish. The Romantics cover of Midnight to Six Man gave the song the power pop edge it deserved. Couple of wacky drummers also: Pretty Things: Romantics:
cynic Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Hurra Torpedo's "Total Eclipse Of The Heart". If they were to cover Nirvana, I wonder if there would be a discernible difference.
Bass Guy Dave Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 another big fan of Preist's "Green Manalishi" cover... I did find a video of Rob Halford and Paul Gilbert doing a pretty cool cover of "I Don't Need no Doctor" at some guitar clinic--may not reach the "way better" level...but Halford is an amazing talent to watch in such a no BS environment. (Paul Gilbert is, of course, his usual excellently sick self.) Aretha Franklin's "Respect" easily topped Otis Redding's. * I also think this cover is WAY better than the original (which isn't saying that much...)
Willie G. Moseley Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Speaking of the Romantics, their version of "Little Latin Lupe Lu" just about tops Mitch Ryder's original on accounta it's in a segue from "What I Like About You" (MTV concert)
spanky Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Nobody has mentioned Bob Dylan covers. He has written many great songs and sometimes I understand the words when he sings them, but generally they sound better by someone else. Like Hendrix's versions of "All along the Watchtower" and "Like a Rolling Stone " (live version). Also GnR's version of Knockin on Heaven's Door .......lots to pick from with Dylan.
Armitage Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Celine Dion rocked the f**k out of You Shook Me All Night Long.I really liked her version of Roy Orbison's "I drove all Night." Cindy Lauper did a great job too.
