That's actually a band I'd never heard of...but just saw this other cover by them of an old Small Faces song.

BUT...this bands reminds me of another discussion we had on the HFC once about "Canadian Bands" sounding "Canadian." THIS band is a perfect example on these two songs. It immediately SOUNDS Canadian. I still cannot put into words exactly what that is...it just does. It has nothing to do with genre, there is just some element that makes it different from American, British, Australian, German, etc.

Sort of like picking out Dan Akroyd, John Candy, Eugee Levy, Jim Carrey or Michael J. Fox as Canadian....maybe it's in the beer? Maybe it's too polite? Even the most nasty Canadians still don't seem like they'd shoot or stab you. I think you might need that "edge" in certain music or acting roles, no?

Like R.E.M.....great band...but THEY could almost be Canadian.

Gotta go with Cheap Trick's "Aint that a Shame"

Also, a band called Gunn did a KILLER remake of "Word Up".

Maybe not better than the original, but I've always enjoyed The Lemonheads version of "Mrs. Robinson"...

Celine Dion rocked the f**k out of You Shook Me All Night Long.

Turn in your man card. Immediately.

Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams and Right Round

Megadeth's These Boots

Iron Maiden's Cross Eyed Mary

Nirvana's The Man Who Sold The World

Talking Heads were one of my favorite bands in the 80's but this remake by Living Colour is great.

The original by the Talking Heads.

I'm a huge T Heads fan and prefer the original version but really like what Living Colour did with their cover.

Two of my favorite covers of all time do NOT surpass the originals (which I think would be impossible :( ) but the bands really do make it their own, which is the way it should be.

Satisfaction - DEVO

(stick around for the noise-fest at the end, awesomely WOV)

OK, back to the original point of the thread - covers I think ARE better than the original ...

and I know I'll probably get ripped for this one but - Working Class Hero

I've always liked when a band can rock a cover that wasn't so heavy rock before. Not always easy to do.

The Ghost of Tom Joad by RATM, original by Bruce Springsteen.

The RATM version just has so much more palpable anger than the more melancholic rendition by Bruce. The original seems more fitting for the times and the sadness, but RATM is an anger-inspired call-to-action and just works better for me and seems to fit the mood of Tom from the book.

I also like the NIN version of Dead Souls better than the original from Joy Division.

Could be that was part of the impetus for CanCon way back in the early 70's.

People could 'tell' that it was Canadian material and simply spun the radio dial?

I agree tho, there is a certain sound from up here (not always, but often enough).

And I agree that Streetheart would fit the bill.

Still like this cover better than the original...

I'd have to second April Wine's 21th Century Schizoid Man.

I know this will tick off the Peter Green fans, but I have to say Judas Priest's version of Green Manalishi.

I always enjoyed Frank Zappa's live version of Stairway to Heaven, Youtube it, trust me.

I found the audio, have not gotten around to seeing the video footage, but Zappa doing Stairway is just wild. Thanks for the heads up!

I immediately thought of "Blinded by the light" but Poe beat me to it.

How about "Little Suzi" by Tesla. Yep, that's a cover.

And Ace Frehley's "New York Groove".

You gotta see the video, Zappa lights up a cigarette and pours himself a cup of coffee during the guitar solo!

Several years ago, there was a Australian compilation album of nothing but Stairway To Heaven covers. This was my favorite from the bunch:

I wish somebody would actually do THIS in this style, too: :(

Once your ears get used to it, it actually fits together!

Speaking of Springsteen covers:

Because the Night - Patti Smith's version.

Richard Thompson does a great version of ther Brittany Spears throwaway "Oops, I Did It Again" demonstrating that it is actually a very well crafted song.

I like Billy Idol's version of "Mony Mony".

That makes me think of another - actually two that I like better than the original

I'm dying here on that Teen Spirit cover  - If I had a band going I'd add it to the set list.

By the way, here's MY favorite Stairway cover:
