gorch Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Currently, I have a set of live songs on my mobile of which I run the full song list at random. This morning Teenage Rampage came to my ears and I was propelled back into youth times. Information at your fingertips, it was quickly revealed what the band is doing today since singer Brian Connolly and drummer Mick Tucker have passed live years ago. It looks like it is still an actively touring band with a quality line-up only having guitarist Andy Scott in the band.My favorite longplayer always have been Give Us A Wink. Off The Record was a favorite too at the time, but lost much of its pace to me today.I know Sweet have a different history in the US than in Europe. What was your SWEET though?
Steve Haynie Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Two versions of the band exist, or claim the name. Steve Priest lives in Los Angeles and does shows as The Sweet. It all depends on where you live as to which band you will see using the name. I have a live album with all the cool songs. They could be heavy when they wanted to be heavy.
DaveH Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I always loved 'Action', and 'Ballroom Blitz'. I have to admit though, I liked Krokus's remake of BB better.
diablo175 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Oh hell YEAH! The Sweet was one of my all-time fave bands as a kid. The potent combination of pop and edginess to fuel a young kid's musical appetites and drive home the importance of melody and the almighty song "hook". To this day Action and Ballroom Blitz still stand as top 10 faves. Still, I really got hooked on the B sides to their 45 singles- tunes like Medusa, Burn on the Flame, & Restless. IMO, the singles version of Action was MUCH preferred over the LP version. Wicked cool intro and break in the middle. I didn't care so much for Krokus' cover of Ballroom Blitz but kinda liked Steve Steven's version of Action. Def Leppard also did a cover of Action in '93 that's not too bad. ACTION
princeofdarkness56 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 One of my all time favorite bands. Glam at it's best. Loved Give Us a Wink and Desolation Boulevard. The management team of Chin / Chapman tried so hard to make them a pure pop band but when those guys plugged in, they just could not tone it down and out came this wonderful noise.
gorch Posted March 25, 2011 Author Posted March 25, 2011 Very nice Bigsby action somewhere in the middle. No electronics needed for spacy sounds though.
Brooks Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 i only know them from the radio when i was a kid, and a best of cd i got a few years ago (lil willie, fox on the run, BB, love is like oxygen). 80's dallas band sweet savage used to do fox on the run.
price33 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 One of my favorite song of Sweet is called "Air On 'A' Tape Loop" from Level-Headed which also has a really cool album cover.
Samurai Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I've always loved "Love is Like Oxygen". Sort of a mini opus. I love the slow acoustic crescendo in the middle. Musically, I always thought it sounded like the result of collision between ELO's and Kansas' tour bus.
Turdus Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 This is the best version of "Action" right here... and you have to spend the full 5:50 watching it, as around 2:30 it becomes pretty darned funny:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=982DrNtCGek
edgar_allan_poe Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Love 'em. BTW, my band just finished recording our demo and we did Ballroom Blitz. That's me on vocals and guitar. We were also going to do Fox on the Run but ran out of time.Spincycle Ballroom Blitz
tommy p Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I love those guys. I'll be playing Ballroom Blitz at a gig tonight!
Samurai Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I love those guys. I'll be playing Ballroom Blitz at a gig tonight! Ignore the Girl in the corner. She's with me.
BruceM Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 This is the best version of "Action" right here... and you have to spend the full 5:50 watching it, as around 2:30 it becomes pretty darned funny:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=982DrNtCGekSimply amazing!I would pay to see Poe's band do this version of the song.ROTFLMAO!!!
psc3251 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Always loved The Sweet- remember my father having an old reel-to-reel tape machine with 'Blockbuster' and I played it to death !! Here's a rare one- Teenage Rampage- BUT they're actually playing live in the tv studio!! They were tight! Cheers Dave
LefThanDed Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 ... from Level-Headed which also has a really cool album cover.Sweet guitar artwork inside the sleeve as well.
gorch Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 I loved this at the time. Should be still sit in the record sleeve.Love Is Like Oxygen has been in the radio the other day. Thought, it still is a modern song though.

gorch Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 Always loved The Sweet- remember my father having an old reel-to-reel tape machine with 'Blockbuster' and I played it to death !!Here's a rare one- Teenage Rampage- BUT they're actually playing live in the tv studio!! They were tight! Cheers Dave Great video! One of my favorites: The Six Teens. It has various sections, acoustic slow up to rocking fast, that make this song stand out from the other hits.
gi_zuk Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Yep, the Six Teens was another good song. They had a lot of them. Highly underated band stateside.
Steve Haynie Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Here is a Sweet song that goes astray from the pop image. If You Don't Go Down On Me ...Someone Else Will The live version of the lyrics was "If you don't fuck you then someone else will." There is a video on youtube with this track, but all the images are of the 9/11 attack instead of The Sweet. Listen if you will. The imagery is all wrong.
price33 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 ... from Level-Headed which also has a really cool album cover.Sweet guitar artwork inside the sleeve as well. Love that cover.
