Hello Y'All,

What are your preferred Locking Tuners--Planet Waves, Grover, Gototh, Fender, etc.,?

Pros and Cons welcome!

Thanks, Ted U.

Depends on what guitar they're going on, but I definitely prefer one's with thumbwheels in the back. Sperzel, Schaller and Grover all make good ones. Planet Waves work fine but I don't like that they cut the strings as it complicates pickup swaps.

Can the Sperzels be directly replaced on a Fender Strat MIM, or would I have to enlarge the hole?

You might have to drill an additional hole in the middle. On my USAs the stock tuners had two mounting pegs on the edges, while the Sperzels have a single peg in the middle.

One thing to keep in mind about Sperzels is the tuning ratio. It's not as precise as other tuners.

Only familiar with Sperzels and Schaller ...have a 1/2 dozen or so guitars with each... they both work fine but to me the Schallers are a LOT smoother.

Currently have sperzels on my EMS-series Pedulla bass on had them on my old Carvin LB-75 Bass...They worked great, even with a low B on my Carvin!!

I've had good luck with Grovers and Sperzels. What I like about the Grovers is that they are exact retrofits into the old holes. for some reason schaller locking tuners use different mounting holes than the standard schaller tuners, which is annoying as heck.

One question I've always had is how much extra string should there be. Do you want it to at least wrap halfway around the post, or does it not matter?

The Schaller locking tuners are good too...

And I believe they offer a staggered set as well which I have read work well with Strat style guitars.

I was shown to set the post holes at a 45º angle from the nut, pull the string through till taught, and lock down the post. Should about half a string winding when tuned to pitch.

Sperzel have staggered set for Strats also, came standard on Daytonas.

MC,

The Sperzels have a Gear Ratio of 12:1. I'm used to 16-18:1 ratios.

How do you "Fine" Tune with the Sperzesl?

With Fingerspitzengefuehl! :)

I have no probs getting in perfect tune, never even thought about the ratio really. Using a Peterson StroboSoft to tune with no problems.

Looks like I'll be going with the Sperzels! Carvin uses them which also helps the decision.

Grover. Cheaper than Sperzels and WAY more precise. The 18:1 ratio makes a huge difference with lower pitches. Of course, this is even more noticeable when you downtune.

Z,

Can you get Grovers which are staggered for 6 in Line Guits like Sperzel offers?

Ah! No, I don't think so. All my guitars are 3x3.

Went on Grover's sight and liked what I saw and the positive Reviews on them compared to Sperzels.

Thanks for the heads up Z.
