murkat Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Great stuff in the lil' shop. The Blitz being prep'd for His new set of clothes A 67 sg jr. getting a facelift, tummy tuck, nail polished, a full salon treatment A bow tie in for some TLC as well. Bumps and slopes radiused out of the board to a nice 12", replacing a couple of inlays, Shall be Excalibur! Great stuff in the shop! Thanks again to all
serial Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 A vintage SG spcl showed up. It is beat. really beat. A down and dirty facelift on it, that is it, that is all I have been instructed to do. Fill and re route P90 cavities, shoot it flat, then alpine white, top coat, age it to match the rest of. It's do able. Jay is bringin' sexy back. Damn.
kizanski Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Gotta love those hammer and wood chisel hum bucker retro-fit jobs!
bubs_42 Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I'm going to end up going on an SG Bender one day and it will be uglier than any of my Sunburst Benders.
gtone Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I'm going to end up going on an SG Bender one day and it will be uglier than any of my Sunburst Benders. If you do, don't hesitate to put one in Jay's able hands - you won't regret it. The setup he did on my SG Jr is scary good - sounds way better than a guitar like that should! I asked if he could make a Maestro Vibrola "work" and he delivered in spades - very stable and sounds incredible to boot. He did all kinds of cool detail work without being asked - lots of small tricks he's picked up from years of experience working on Gibbies, Hamers, etc. in the sole pursuit of making 'em sound/play great. Still can't figure out how he made a P90 Jr sound as quiet as my 'bucker-equipped guits (he won't tell...), but I'm playin' the shit outta it now I tell you! And yah - he's not too shabby in the refinishing dept. either.
murkat Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 Client wanted the SG special to be polaris / alpine white. But due to who knows what has been going on with the guitar in past time without some kind of finish on it, etc. going to be a crap shoot. Turns out that in the past someone tried to fill cracks, splits, wood checks with some kind of stuff. It had bled through the white leaving streaks of pink and browns all over the body. Client had a choice, and chose cardinal red over the Alpine white and then some aging when all said and done.
murkat Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 The red SG is gonna be smoking hot. Love it.Yes it is, client was hesitant, wanted the white, after I sent him pics... He is digging it.
svl Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Red for the fuckin' win! That is gonna be EPIC!
murkat Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 It's all in the sauce.... Year 2006 came a new process, V.O.S. ing at the custom shop. It was done in a limited amount, and was done right. Not like what it has become in recent past years. I was a part of the VOS program. So I have a little background it doing so. So, the special cured enough for me to mess with aging it while still kinda soft but not hardened. Turned out way above my expectations. Very pleased with the results.
svl Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Just stellar. But of course, I expect nothing less from the master!
Lockbody Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 That is a great color on that guitar!Agreed. That SG is SMOKING hot! Great job!
serial Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 My VOS goldtop is a 2006. Aging is really nice and subtle. Got it new and it came that way.
gtone Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Liz Hurley would most assuredly approve of that SG...
cmatthes Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 I wouldn't disapprove of ol' Liz either...
