I like it. It sounds more like DLR's solo stuff than classic VH. But that doesn't really surprise me. It doesn't floor me the way the older stuff does but I'm curious to hear some more.

im not totally impressed

Me either, although the more I listen, the more I like it. But, to me, it's certainly not what I'd consider the classic VH. Then again, classic VH was late 70s I suppose. The chorus is what REALLY throws me.

Lyrically/melodically the pre-chorus/chorus are a letdown, but otherwise OK. I give it a 6.

I was hoping for a lot better than that. Very generic. I'll still get the album though - I can't help myself.

I agree.

But I was expecting worse.

It might grow on me. It's a solid song, has some wit in the lyrics, and I kinda like that they're not trying to replicate an earlier VH iteration (no fake Mikey harmonies.) Questions:

  1. Isn't this a really old song revisited?
  2. Is it just me or would this have been better played at a faster tempo? Not thrash, but less plodding.

Yeah, not doing it for me. One thing I noticed in particular, unlike other VH songs where the solo sounds like an integral part of the song, this one sounds like it's from a totally different song. This kind of midtempo song needs more of a Jimmy Page-type solo. The swells at the very end of the song were pretty cool, though.

Very weak, lame and the video is pretty sad. David Lee Roth looks like someone who is trying too hard to be funny. Either that or he's the kid showing off magic tricks while everyone groans and he doesn't get that people hate magic tricks.

And I'm a HUGE VH fan (until they died in 1985).

This one is not one of the early songs revisited, but She's The Woman is. It's the 2nd track on the new album and was played at the Cafe Wha show. Also, the track listing includes a song called Bullethead and that was the title of a real scorcher from back in the old days. I liked that old stuff and of course it's possible that other old riffs and songs have been resurrected and retitled. Like I said, the Tattoo single does nothing for me but I'll definitely be getting the album.

I've seen them on every tour since Fair Warning including a Cherone show and the Roth reunion, but I'll have to see some set lists and reviews before I decide whether I'm going this time. So far they don't have any dates close enough to me that I would just go and hope for the best, and if ticket prices are ridiculous that won't help.

I had zero expectations on this one, was more expecting a turd than a "turn it up" song. I say - Hell Yeah! This actually has, even if it's just a tad of, freshness over it.

I give it a "thumbs up!"

I had high expectations on the new ZZ top material with Rick Rubin, and that song was a genuine turd. So I say keep your exepectations low and you might get surprised.

I gotta hear this one again actually, now, wheres that play button?!(diamond dave'ish low voice).

Not too bad. Better than the Cherone era and better than what passes for rock on the radio today. Glad they are making the effort.

That's what I thought - Kind of reminiscent of "The Dogtown Shuffle", for example (That's not necessarily a bad thing - I liked a lot of the solo DLR stuff more than I liked Van Hagar). Not like the first time I heard Van Halen, but not bad (better than 90% of the crap they play on the radio these days). I'm excited to hear more.

I think their window of opportunity closed many years ago... the sound of them trying to kick their way through the glass just proves the point...

And what's wrong with Eddies sound? It sounds like a Big Muff plugged in direct!

Posted

It wouldn't be bad as a filler song - but as their first release from the album?

I'm concerned if that's as good as it gets...

It actually is a older song revisited. Musically it was originally "Down In Flames", with new lyrics. "Bullethead" is also the old "Bullethead".

It took a couple listens, but I dig it. Dave sounds great, like the lyrics ("mousewife to momshell" is going into rotation in convos for sure) and as a whole it has a good bit of the "vibe". Still more psyched for "She's The Woman" and "Bullethead", but it was a good start.

Getting my tix for both shows in just under a half hour. :)

That's not what I would have picked for an opening single/release.

I listened to it last night, and wasn't impressed. It may be a decent song coming from some other band, but I had higher expectations for VH.

Sounds like a bunch of noise thrown together with a few lyrics that border on idiotic.

I'll still see the show, but hope they put out something better next.

Quite a radio mainstream song I would suggest.

Bowie is first thing that came to mind hearing the first 5 seconds.

don't know why.

They need some help.
