jisham Posted January 10, 2012 Author Posted January 10, 2012 Got tickets for the DC show about hour or so ago when the Amex presale started. I opted for Section 101 vs. floor seating as I'm too old to wrestle with idiots on the floor these days.
FrankieIII Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 THE GOOD = Intro, drum set, EVH Wolfgang bass, Dave's pants, lyrics, Eddie's solo.THE BAD = Bass player looks like the drawing/giveaway winner to be in a VH video.THE UGLY = Eddie and Mini Me's attire.
Frank Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 The solo starts out sounding like he's playing the old Guess Who song - "No Time left For You".
Mitch Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Musically it was originally "Down In Flames", with new lyrics.Yah. The old Down in Flames was darker, heavier, and... better. To my knowledge, the only recording of Down in Flames is on the bootleg from the famous Sunday afternoon gig opening for Sabbath in Nashville.http://www.vhboots.c...vember1978.htmlMe thinks that since the new album has three tracks essentially written before they were signed speaks to what Sammy has said about EVH -- lotsa riffs in the can, but no songs.Either that, or it's a conscious decision to try to get some of their old vibe back, which would be nice. It'll be interesting to hear what they do to Bullethead, which used to be just two minutes long.Bottom line, if these tracks were that good to begin with, they would've been on the first album, or at least recycled (like Voodoo Queen & Where Were You Last Night) long before thirty years had passed.Like I said before, I'm A-OK with releasing old songs, if only they'd chosen the best ones! "She's the Woman", IMHO, wasn't one of them.
BubbaVO Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Not what I expected as a first single, but I liked it well enough. It won't make me forget "Everybody Wants Some." But we're talking an AARP aged VH after all. So a bit of a mid-tempo number isn't so bad. The guys behind the glass deserve a Grammy - they make Dave's vocals sound like the good old Diamond Dave, when the clips of She's the Woman reveal a DLR gasping after every phrase.

"She's the Woman", IMHO, wasn't one of them.I have a version of "DIF" from a New Years Eve show in '77. Great tune, definitely darker than "Tattoo".VH has said that they wanted to get back to the beginning and the original vibe, hence the reworking of old material, which is what the hardcore old school VH fan wants (I'm one of 'em). As to how good the tracks were to begin with, that's a personal opinion thing. I think there was a lot of the material on the old demos that was better than what they picked for the first three albums, but hey, I ain't the guy making the decisions. I love "She's The Woman", so there's that difference of opinion thing rearin' it's ugly head.As to Sammy- again an opinion thing- fuck him and his ballyhoo. Like any argument, there are three sides to this one and no matter the brothers dickheadedness he's just as guilty of being a dickhead. The bottom line is VH has a new album coming that's gonna please a lot of people (including me) and make dough, a money making massive tour (got my advance VIP tix this morning, and those suckers sold out fast here in Chicago and the aftermarket tix are going for big bucks) and the guys seem a lot happier and healthier than they have in a long time. Which IMO merits a big "Good for them!" cheer, I wish 'em all the best and will support all their endeavors in 2012 and beyond.
crunchee Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Nice beat, easy to dance to; I'd give it a 65, Mr. Clark. Big +1 on what Bubs said...Dave sounds like the Dave of old, but not like Old Gaspy Dave. This song doesn't make me want to play air guitar or start head bangin', but it ain't terrible, either. Glad that there's only a thin layer of synths on it.
MCChris Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 One thing the song and video make clear is that this is the Dave show. I for one love that, but Eddie's not demonstrated an ability to be cool with that for a prolonged length of time since 1984, if not earlier. So it'll be interesting to see how long they can hold it together.
princeofdarkness56 Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Actually heard the song on the radio in the car and sounds even better than the video.
sonic1974 Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I'm behind on the VH news. So are they going to record a new album, or is it just a tour?
tommy p Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 It might grow on me. It's a solid song, has some wit in the lyrics, and I kinda like that they're not trying to replicate an earlier VH iteration (no fake Mikey harmonies.) Questions: Isn't this a really old song revisited? Is it just me or would this have been better played at a faster tempo? Not thrash, but less plodding. This one is not one of the early songs revisited, but She's The Woman is. It's the 2nd track on the new album and was played at the Cafe Wha show. Also, the track listing includes a song called Bullethead and that was the title of a real scorcher from back in the old days. I liked that old stuff and of course it's possible that other old riffs and songs have been resurrected and retitled. Like I said, the Tattoo single does nothing for me but I'll definitely be getting the album. It actually is a older song revisited. Musically it was originally "Down In Flames", with new lyrics. "Bullethead" is also the old "Bullethead". It took a couple listens, but I dig it. Dave sounds great, like the lyrics ("mousewife to momshell" is going into rotation in convos for sure) and as a whole it has a good bit of the "vibe". Still more psyched for "She's The Woman" and "Bullethead", but it was a good start. Getting my tix for both shows in just under a half hour. Hmmmm... I know I have Down In Flames. I'll have to dig that out and give it a listen.
Jack C Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Liked it better the second listen than the first time. It seems like one of those catchy songs that you could burn out on pretty quickly - but it is catchy. Not a bad choice for a first single.
earachemyeye Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 It's ear candy but I like it for several reasons. I like the sound he's got going. It reminds me of the old stuff. I like the lyrical content in that they're having fun with pop culture and they look like it. It's got some dynamics which is nice to hear in any rock song these days.Daves moves are damn good for an old geezer. I like the way they're coming across in the vid. Like the party band they used to be but in a more mature way. It's an encouraging step forward (to me) for something that was hard to be optimistic about for a long time. I'm looking forward to more.
bubs_42 Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Great Band, they just need a new singer with better lyrics. Sorry Fella's, I love Old VH and I really LOVE Dave Solo but the rest is just well the above song.
SteveB Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 It's not a bad song, it just sounds like a recycling of old VH, but in more boring fashion. While thats good from a nostalgia standpoint, I'd hope they'd do something to try to push their boundaries a bit and not make something that sounds like they are just trying to grab money from old fans. Maybe the rest of the album will show something different.
pesocaster Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 I actually liked the song.... HOWEVER.... I think the video killed the vibe 1000%..... so listen to it and do NOT watch the video....
mathman Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 It's pretty good. Good enough to want to hear more.
tommy p Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Like it or not, we're all talking about it and my FB friends are too. They're getting back on everyone's mind and that's a good thing. After listening to it a few more times, it's grown on me some and I really do have high hopes for the new album even if it's just to check out what they've done to their old songs She's The Woman and Bullethead and to see if they used any other old riffs for the new ones.
kizanski Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Decent tune, but nothing that's going to make we want to buy the new release, that's for sure.It looks like they spent a good 10 or 15 minutes making the video, though.
gregc Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 I think it's OK. It is what it is, fellas, nothing more, nothing less. Certainnly nothing to be embarassed about.
jisham Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 Decent tune, but nothing that's going to make we want to buy the new release, that's for sure.It looks like they spent a good 10 or 15 minutes making the video, though.Whoever edited that video should be fired IMO...the mismatch of what's actually being played vs. what we see in the video is beyond amateur. But yeah, 20 minutes tops!
