specialk Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Old song. Old video. I'm no expert, but I don't remember ever seeing Carlos with a Telecaster before:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od9FkRvvnrg
atquinn Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 For some reason, I always thought that was a strat? I loved that song when I was a kid and only found out it was Santana after that album with "Smooth" came out. Still can't reconcile Winning with the Black Magic Woman/Smooth Santana sounds. There were all sorts of Gib-oid guys that went Fender in the 80's.-Austin
Feynman Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Man, I've never liked that tune, or much of Santana's work, but Teles still rule.
veatch Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 "Winning" was written by Russ Ballard. Same dude that wrote "You Can Do Magic" (lame) and this (which i *did* like, but the video butched all of the good bits out of the song..)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NiZxwdNvAI
django49 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 A natural pairing......Both made in Mexico, no?
T-51Fred Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I'd love to hear more of Santana on teles doing what he does best.
kizanski Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I'd love to hear more of Santana on teles doing what he does best. You mean playing the same solo in every song for the past 40 years?

crunchee Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I remember this song from years ago...typical late 70's/early 80's soft rock, got lots of airplay. It didn't inspire me to pick up a guitar.
sirDaniel Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 he lost cred with me when he backedup Bieber on NY eve. I said BACKED UP...
crunchee Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 A natural pairing......Both made in Mexico, no?When this song was originally first recorded and released by Santana, no. The assumption/comparison ('natural pairing'?) is politically incorrect to say the least, too.
serial Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Santana was THE most painfully boring act I've ever seen live. Kiz nails it-sure he has a distinctive sound, but it's like a "nails on a blackboard" horribly annoying sound (ok, more like a mosquito buzzing in your ear).Men at Work were better live and .38 Special, although they might have been worse than Santana, at least had a decent song or two (but they were AWFUL live).

That can't be. I'm guessing you've been to a Cars concert. The one time I saw Santana live was on the Freedom tour. Maybe it was because Buddy Miles was in the band, but they were blazin'.
velorush Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Men at Work were better live and .38 Special, although they might have been worse than Santana, at least had a decent song or two (but they were AWFUL live). .38 Special recently or back in their heyday? I ran spot for them a couple of times back in the mid Eighties and thought they put on a good show... maybe I was just distracted trying to make sure I was shooting the right position with the right gel... but my memory is favorable.

You talking about spotlights or your '80s hair-styling ritual? Serial just despises Donnie Van Zandt. He'd hate a Cheap Trick concert if DVZ were onstage.

You talking about spotlights or your '80s hair-styling ritual? Serial just despises Donnie Van Zandt. He'd hate a Cheap Trick concert if DVZ were onstage. Remember, I'm in the very rural south. Hair gel didn't catch on until it'd moved on everywhere else. I was stocking shelves at Fred's back around '85 and one woman pointed out hair mousse to another: 'see there, that's mousse... put it in yer hair and yer hair looks wet all day!' She responded: 'why would you want that?' There was a shrug... Back then running spot was pretty tricky for a southern boy. The guys calling the shots for national acts always seemed to have thick, unintelligible English accents and always seemed to be torqued before the shows ever started.
mathman Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I saw Santana in 1977. Thought it was a great show.
Mitch Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I saw Santana in 1977. Thought it was a great show.Bingo.There are lotsa bands that if ya didn't see 'em in the '70s, ya didn't see 'em. Heart, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, VH, Ted, Kiss, Eagles, the list goes on.
