Lots of good suggestions. I'll add Larry Young. In addition to his own records as a leader, he played with the likes of John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana. He died of untreated pneumonia at age 38 in 1978.

I was fortunate enough to catch Jimmy Smith when I was living in London in 96, one of the best jazz (?) shows I have ever witnessed, and he was already an old man by that time.

Had a beer with Billy Powell (Lynyrd Skynyrd) in the Nashville airport about a year before he died. I always thought his piano parts were tasteful compliments to their songs, and he was a great guy to talk to to boot. He was getting loaded before he had to get on that plane...
