Ting Ho Dung Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Well, you only turn 18 once. Went all out. I got the 7 string off e-bay a while back and was disappointed in it. I didn't want to give my son a "White Elephant" for his 18th so I put it in the closet and felt bad that I bought it. So a few weeks later BrentRocks put up his '81 silver burst and I knew it was the guitar for my son. Brandon is a huge Tool fan (must have got it from me) and he has always loved Adam Jones' guitar. So I pulled out the plastic and got it from Brent. Brandon was away for a day and I decided to take another look at the Jackson. The pickups were supposedly upgraded to Dimarzios but they were mounted crooked and were also about a half inch below the strings. The guitar sounded like crap. The volume pot also didn't work. I pulled the strings and took out the pickups. Who ever rigged them must have thrown something away that would allow the height to be adjusted and make them level and secure. I cut a piece of acoustic foam to fit and screwed the pickups back in. I replaced the pot, shined the thing up and it turned out to be a really nice playing and sounding guitar. I only paid $300 for it on e-bay so decided to give it to him too. We then went to see Batman at the IMAX. I asked him last night if he had a happy birthday. He said yes and he said he would have had a happy birthday even if I didn't get him anything. So I don't think I spoiled him but I do think he will remember his 18th birthday.

django49 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 IIRC, when I graduated from high school (age 17) I got a suitcase as a graduation present. Gee, I wonder if they were trying to send a message?Man, I would have DIED for something like either one of those guitars! For ANY occasion! (I DID get $10 toward a Harmony hollow body bass for one birthday).Enjoy them together!
gorch Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Too cool! Same event 2 weeks ahead here. We're in preparation.
Ting Ho Dung Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 Thanks guys. I forwarded the B-day wishes along to Brandon and spread the love with him and the wife as well. All to often I forget to mention her. She's in this too.
