Morris Davis Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 update: I canceled the sam ash order. Why? I ordered it from musicians friend. They did the price match to $800 PLUS they gave me a $250 gift card as part of their price match guarantee. The net price is $550 !!!!! -- For $800 you get this gibson midtown. I wasn't even on the market but this deal was too good for me to pass up.
hamerhead Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Nice grab! I played one and fell in love with it. I don't need another guitar..... I don't need another guitar....... I don't need another guitar.......... That's a stupid good price.$600 for a Firebird ain't too bad, either.Sam's got some pretty good deals:http://www.samash.co...ck-friday-deals
DaveL Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 These sam ash deals are crazy. just picked up a traditional mahogany les paulfor $1150 delivered. I also got 5% cashback with using a mr rebates link, soit came to$1093. I had bought the custom classic, but am returning it, I just thought that whilemore blingy, it seemed kind of cheap in terms of build quality fretboard, cheapinlays etc... it came across as a $1500 les paul copy. liked the woody feelof the mahogany better a couple tips If you have a DISCOVER card, check with them first, one of their planshas a special promotion this month for 5% cashback, not all cards qualifymine didn't, they could have switched me, but it would have taken a coupleweeks... worth a 5 minute phone call.mr rebates referral link, it's like a bing cashback thing, basically youregister and then click on them before going to sam ash, also havecashback deals with GC, musicians friend, music 123 etc... most ofthe rebates are around 5%, the only exception I saw with sam wasapple products...http://www.mrrebates.com?refid=459517
crunchee Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Pics and quality/tone report, or it didn't happen. But seriously, pics and quality/tone report, please! Hearing about sales like this makes me start wondering, does somebody out there know something that the rest of us (as consumers) don't? I'm keeping in mind the latest bad/not so good news regarding Fender's IPO, Gibson's apparent stockroom blowout, and GC's rumored imminent demise, among other economic things. Sometimes there's not much difference between 'scary good' deals, and just plain scary.
DaveL Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 yeah a little disconcerting... just bought a GC string club card I joked thatthe last time I bought one (Daddy's) it didn't work out that well... and theguy was like "oh were fine". I would be careful with layways and wouldnot consign a guitar with a retailer right now. I'm sure Gibson had a heavy inventory, and even tho they're blowing stuffout at cost or below...it's probably good for them from an inventory end ofyear standpoint. anyone selling a used LP for $1800 on craigslist getsscrewed, but hey honestly, for a good couple years, there's been peopleasking retail on craigslist, and I'm not sure it's realistic, I think you needto be really careful and make sure you get good deals on purchases.
kizanski Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 $600 for a Firebird ain't too bad, either.Sam's got some pretty good deals:http://www.samash.co...ck-friday-dealsWow! That's almost too good to pass up, but I'm going to do my best to resist.Even had one in my shopping cart, just seconds from hitting the button to commit, then I remembered the stack of unused guitars that are mercilessly mocking me as I type this.I'm going to point to the Slim Taper neck as the reason that I pass on one, but it'll probably bother me for a couple of hours until I forget about it.

Sometimes there's not much difference between 'scary good' deals, and just plain scary. It would seem Gibson has finally caught on that it's not 2008 any longer and is pricing everything to move. Then, once all the old stock is gone, new, lower-price models take their place. Just like now, when the economy started to suck wind in the 70's, they started to release all these lower-end, no-frills guitars to keep people in Gibsons guitars. Cant' swing that Les Paul? How about a The Paul or a Sonex or maybe a S-1? I think Gibson sees the writing on the wall for the foreseeable future.

Well well well....look what showed up on my doorstep a couple of days ago. Mike, there's no way I'd call the neck on this one a "slim taper" -- more like nice and beefy IMO. Anyway, I too couldn't pass up the price on these Firebird Tributes and other than the finish being pretty cheesy, it sounds and plays fantastic. The mini-hums have a lot of chime and seem to sit right between a single coil and a humbucker. Great great tone. I'm glad I got it.
MCChris Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 That worn brown LP Traditional is tempting. If only I hadn't just bought back my SuperPro.
Willie G. Moseley Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 I just signed up for a Midtown P-90 in cherry sunburst, based on this thread. That is indeed a no-brainer price, and it's a configuration I've always wanted to try (although I've had a couple of Robin Savoys w/ chambered mahogany bodies, those had an alternate wood for a cap). Plus there's the bound neck and larger (therefore more visible) fret markers. If I don't like it I ought to be able to flip it for what I put into it, and I'd imagine I'd actually interpolate the "Did you miss the Sam Ash Black Friday special on the Midtown P-90? Well here it is again!" or something like that.Plus, Sam Ash is a reliable advertiser for the magazine for which I write, and their reps and I have done vintage business in the past. Nevertheless, this is the first time I've jumped on something like this via the 'net. But I find myself hoping I'll keep it.

Hbom Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 Such a deal! It was tuff to resist those midtowns, what a steal! So I drank a lot of egg nog and buried myself in my Newport. Looks like I survived the 1st day of Black Friday. Today I guess I'll play the Studio. Just to get me by, ya know. Congrats to all who got such nice guitars at good prices.

Morris Davis Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 update: I canceled the sam ash order. Why? I ordered it from musicians friend. They did the price match to $800 PLUS they gave me a $250 gift card as part of their price match guarantee. The net price is $550 !!!!!

They tried to fight me on the $250 gift card. They are capping the offer at $100 now. But originally the offer was called the "holiday price match." It was for an additional gift card for 50% of the price match. It took over half an hour on the phone to finagle the full $250.

I just did the same thing for a vintage burst Midtown, although MF has definitely capped the refund at $100. Still...was the incentive I needed to take the plunge.
