Saw Candlebox last night. Ugly Ass PA system. Someone Know What It Is

Free concert in down town Clearwater last night with fire works. Nice evening about 62 degrees and clear. Took Brandon. He had never heard of Candlebox. I showed him "You" live on utube. He liked it and wanted to go. Great show but they had an unusual PA. It was loud and small. It sounded good at certain distances and angles and not so good at others. We crashed the VIP section toward the end because they always do "You" as an encore. The singer's voice is high and sounded like shit that close to the PA. Here are some bad shots but maybe someone knows about the PA.

And here's "You" in case you guys missed it 20 years ago

The band looked a bit board last night. There was no crowd surfing or mosh pits breaking out. Just a bunch of old fuckers. But it was fun anyway.

I was just listening to some Candlebox yesterday. Their Guitar Player was doing a solo acoustic semi-private gig in Peoria a couple months ago. I head it rocked. He was on the radio promoting it and they released 120 tickets two hours before the show and they sold them out.

He's a great guitarist. I love his solos and on "You" he bends each note flat which raises the tension I feel in the song. I had a great time with Brandon last night. I haven't been to an outdoor concert with him in a long time. It's always fun going to downtown St. Pete or Clearwater. But, the question still remains. What the hell is that Fugly PA system?

No idea on the pa but sad I couldn't catch that show. Did you see the opener? The drummer is a friend of mine.

No, we had a tough time getting out of town. We got there about a half hour into Candlebox.

Just a bunch of old fuckers.

Always a problem with a live audience. Let's be real, if I were to mosh pit it, I'd be out of work with injury for a few weeks or more.

Moshing to Candlebox would be an exercise in idiocy. Not that it would stop anyone from doing it, especially in Florida.

Now, making the beast with two backs to Candlebox (their first album at least): that I've done, and I highly recommend it.

Agreed. But it's fun to watch. I haven't moshed since I was in my thirties. Although I did mosh at a deftones concert a few years ago hoping to get hurt or hurt someone. But I came out unscathed and only lasted one song. Their encore.

You must not have seen the video I posted with all the crowd surfing going on. Not sure if it was filmed in Florida though.

Like I said, just because it's totally inappropriate doesn't mean fools won't do it. Some guys would mosh at a Yanni concert if they felt inspired to express their latent desire for other men.

Between that crap and pointing camera phones at the stage, I'd say about 20% of the crowd at any given concert could care less that actual musicians are performing.

Just a guess, but it may be "stage art". The silver cylindrical cabinets may be non-functional covers designed to look cool. Possibly a run-of-the-mill rented system behind the fascia.

Thanks Badger. I'll check it out. The other thing that I thought odd was the small square holes cut in the cabinets. Like ports. Also if you notice the upper cab is hanging precariously off the lower one.

To find out about this or any PA, from speakers on sticks to stadium-sized rigs, ProSoundWeb is the place to go.

You might even get a response from the rig-in-question's manufacturer and provider.

Great forum.

You could also try over at gearslutz http://www.gearslutz.com/board/

I'll send a pic to my buddy who is a pro FOH engineer. Just from the looks, I'm guessing it is some kind of modular array, though I don't know the brand.

Try asking on the bands facefuck page.

I doubt they'd know. It was probably something Downtown Clearwater rented. The stage is the same thing Lakeland uses for its outdoor events.

His response was that they are "Bullshit Nexos."

Here is your link:

Yep, that's it. Thanks for the link. I suppose they may have their place in the scheme of things but not as the main sound system. The big boxes to the left with the square ports aren't in their brochure though. Maybe some sort of subwoofer.

The boxes to the left are side fill monitors. They come from an era before monitor wedges, but a lot of band still use them. Often they are used to shoot a more complete mix across stage.

Modular arrays are actually great for mains and have been very popular for years and are common to a lot of top touring shows. They can make a whole lot of noise in a little space. These just happen to suck.

LOL

Thanks for the info on the boxes.

Thanks Mitch. I'll check out those links as well. Thorn is my real name BTW. :P

I'm looking at PAs for the outdoor concert I'm putting on in a few months. Maybe the Nexos would sound better at lower volumes. I don't think Down Town Lakeland will let me crank to the levels Candlebox played.
