Bennyboy-UK Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Anyone know a diminutive rocker with a taste for fucking boots?
jisham Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 It was a dick move, but are we sure it wasn't just a publicity stunt? I noticed in the latest Sweetwater catalog that Epiphone just re-issued this same guitar...I totally agree.
rj2858 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 WTF is causing all of this hostility? So Prince launches a guitar BFD. You reach that level of status and you CAN do this because you can pay for it. Prince has been dropping guitars for a while now. Not the first time I've seen this. Considering the appearance and his recent grammy show sighting is promoting a new release you might expect something to add word of mouth hype. Prince playing live on broadcast is fairly rare. The man is a f'n genius with virtuoso chops and melodic dexterity. Regardless of rock or R&B via New Power Generation lately his performance is always inspired and over the top. ...and his music blows, and it always has. What's that saying about opinions? - Austin Well there had to be something to balance out all the "he's a genius" ass-kissing that goes on every time this douche's name comes up. I was expecting something like this. Seems so typical around here. Agree with the masses, or long established members, or be silent, and all is good, but don't dare disagree. Never say anything negative about KISS, Prince, and a few others, because you saw through the hype, or just plain hate the music, or be fed to the lions. Yet you can't say anything positive about other acts, if it's one of the performers that "everyone" here agrees is only appropriate rip on. You can say you don't like Clapton, Jeff Beck or Hendrix, that's OK, (and I have no problem with that, if you don't like them, fine. I may not understand what you're not hearing, but that's up to you. Likewise, if you like someone, OK, I don't have to agree), but suggest that Prince was a product of media hype, and not a "genius"? Sacrilege! It's like the post a few months back, when someone posted a video of Prince playing 'While my guitar gently weeps' at some fundraiser, and everyone was gushing over it as genius. I don't get it. That's "genius", but the "Beano" album sucked. OK, tells me all I need to know.
Turdus Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 It was a dick move, but are we sure it wasn't just a publicity stunt? I noticed in the latest Sweetwater catalog that Epiphone just re-issued this same guitar... Now we're onto something. Not for nothing, but that Roots dude is a fairly high profile Gibson endorser. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if that was a stunt. We're hoping, but the crazing on this headstock and the chipping of the gold figure in the middle looks more like vintage aging to me. I s'pose it could have gotten surface cracks that way from the fall. The smashed white one looks very vintage. The white one posted earlier in the thread was a Gibson CS release from a few years ago. It has P90's. The 50th, just released, has mini hums with vibrato, and appears to only be available in cherry. the white one, in the Sweetwater catalog, is a different model.

You can either agree or disagree, and nobody else is any more or less right than you are. If you don't like having your opinions discussed, criticized, agreed with, or debated, why are you posting on the Internet in the first place? That's not how it works.

Crimsontider Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Dudes a musical genius but his youtube revolt cost him a lot of good sentiment with many that haven't a clue who he is.http://www.alltimeclubbing.com/video/214297/prince-the-beautiful-ones
zorrow Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Well, I'm more into metal than into anything else, but I particularly like funk. Prince to me is a monster musician and I don't care if he got Satch-like chops or not. He's still an awesome guitarist. Perhaps a true a**hole (if all this wasn't actually pre-arranged) but musically the guy absolutely rules.
cloakerz Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 OK, you can send him the purple hamer AFTER you send it up north to canada for a little play-time here...

Even if this was pre-arranged, Prince has done enough crap over the years to prove that his assholity is at the same level as his musical genius. And just slightly below the level of his ego. - Austin

FrettyMcgee Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 My Prince awareness timeline: Purple Rain.... Nothing for years..... Name to a squiggly line.... Nothing for years..... Giving away album with concert tix to count as sales..... Dave Chappelle skit.... Weird and funny Kevin Smith story. Solid guitar player, and fantastic pop writer, and 80s icon, but "genius" never crossed my mind. Guess I wasn't really paying attention. If a genius trashes someone's vintage guitar in a forest and I'm not paying attention, does it still make a sound like Manic Monday? Let's Go Crazy was cool.

Purple Rain in the rain. I think he's a great player, which makes episodes like this all the more disappointing.
kizanski Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Wait...There is a Kevin Smith story I missed?!?!?Yes. Hysterical!

Let's Go Crazy was cool. 25 albums between 1978 and 2010, plus 6 film soundtracks. Plus a bit of talent discovery, producing, and a little bit of touring. His 1999 song and album had enough legs to get him on the Dec. 1999 covers of Guitar Player, Bass Player, and Keyboard simultaneously.
FrankieIII Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Kirk's broken Epi is a 1962, not 1961. It will go nicely next to his main Gibson Les Paul that was burned in a Heineken beer commercial.
Caddie Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 This all could have been avoided if the guy from the Roots simply said "no" to the Purple One in the first place. What we have here is the unfortunate consequence of still being starstruck despite having carved out a perfectly successful career for yourself. Then came the ultimate insult, where he remained starstruck by asking Mr. Unpronounceable Symbol to autograph the remains and received a "no" in return. Amen Brother. Plus everyone seems to believe that Prince had these deep thoughts, plots, subplots for heaving someone else's guitar into the air. Its much simpler than that. Plain old disrespect of other people. Its kinda like the ass in the mall parking lot who lets his car door swing open and put a nice scrape n doink into the door of your Porshe. Other people are invisible to these types of people . I'm no psychologist but isn't that refered to as a sociopath? Not a psychopath like Ted Bundy. A sociopath like Bernie Madoff. Screw everyone else, its all about ME. The Me generation.caddie

I hear the train a comin', its rollin' 'round the bend......Nobody has slammed Johnny Cash lately. Come on y'all, join in!
Cary Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Let's cut to the chase: It doesn't matter how many guitars he's smashed, or how tall he is, or whether or not he's a sociopath, or whether he has flawless technique, or anything else; He's done both Appolonia AND Carmen Electra... Soooo... Tip of the hat to you, you magnificent bastard.

cmatthes Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Unless you were there early on in her career, you're tracking around whatever pollution Dennis Rodman left for the rest of your life. I think that would officially be classified as a Superfund site.Yikes.
rj2858 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I'm sorry you feel that way, but I think you're way off base. You don't need to look any further than my posts to see that there is often a difference of opinion about almost everything, and no one is afraid to express theirs. I appreciate the reply, and from cmatthes as well. Did I overreact to a reasonable and tame response from Austin? Yeah, I did. That comes from 2 things. The first goes back about 8-9 months, when I disagreed with a much longer tenured member than myself, about something that I experienced, yet I was being shouted down with opinion being presented as fact. It seemed like others were piling on, more in defense of the member who was taking me on, and not on the merits of the disagreement, or my contention that you can believe whatever you want, but this is what I've seen. Now once is one thing, but it happened again a short time later, and knowing that I'm the last guy to walk away from an argument or a fight, I thought it was better for me to stay away from the HFC for a while. When I came back, I purposely avoided disagreeing with points that many others were on the same side of, figuring it was better than starting an argument. I've said a number of times, anyone can like whatever they want, it doesn't affect my income, but I'd expect that in return as well. In this particular case, I read all of the posts prior to mine, (most after I posted), and see that there were in fact quite a few people who seem to feel similarly to me about Prince, and they weren't being shouted down. OK, thats' fair, and I should have noticed that first. The second thing is that I'm really touchy about people doling out superlatives and since I just can't stand Prince, and don't understand where the 'genius" crap comes from, I just lost it. Sorry boys, dock me a days pay.
