Hamersaur Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Another I thought of worth mentiong is Natalie Merchant.
Disturber Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 As always when posting a list, something will pop up in my head that should have been on it, as soon as I hit the "post it" button. But here it goes, these are the names that come to my mind as of right now:RnB / pop:Aretha FranklinBetty DavisRosie GainesNona HendryxBettye LavetteBrenda RussellEtta JamesBeyonceWhitney HoustonChristina AguileraGwen StefaniAlicia KeysLisa Lopez, Rozanda Thomas, Tionne Watkins aka TLCRock / Country:Chrissie HyndeKate PiersonCindy WillsonSusanna HoffsStevie NicksDeby HarryJoni MitchellLinda RonstadtHeather NovaPJ HarveySheryl CrowNatalie MainesLucinda WilliamsDolly PartonLoretta Lynn
zorrow Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I really like and listen to regularly: Lady Gaga Joan Jett (mostly with The Blackhearts) Imogen Heap Martirio (Spanish singer) Amy Winehouse I like and listen to occasionally : Adele Kerry Ellis (I have her album Anthems, with Brian May) Sheryl Crow (specially like Real Gone from the Cars soundtrack. Driving!) Shania Twain Beyonce Pink Madonna (the old stuff, of course) Tina Turner ... There should be more, but anyway... Finally, I give a special mention to a female metaller who, in spite of not being exactly a preferred female singer of mine, still fronts one of my preferred metal bands: Angela Gossow (the growler in Arch Enemy)
mudshark Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Jolie Holland Rosie Flores Billie Holiday Rosemary Clooney Patsy Cline Ma Rainey Lucille Bogan Billie Holiday Sister Rosetta Tharpe Janis Joplin Iris Demint
jwhitcomb3 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 No one has mentioned her, so I will: Shawn Colvin. I think she is terrific. Someone else already has, but I will again: Aimee Mann. She's smart, and has stood the test of a few decades. Neko Case. Awesome. Joan Armitrading. Fantastic.Emmy Lou Harris. Wonderful. Joni Mitchell. A part of many of our lives. Catherine Maclellan. Unsung heroine. Suzanne Vega, too. Someone already mentioned the amazing Alison Krauss. She's something else!So many others, who I can't think of at the moment. It is kind of funny: Until I was about 30 I didn't have more than a couple albums featuring a female vocalist (had a small collection, too, and limited income). Since then, I run about 50/50. Wow...got to reply #26 before a mention of Joni Mitchell appeared.
Crimsontider Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 It's interesting that many listed Aimee Mann being that she's kind of under the radar. Her falceto is the best in Rock imo,The musical IQ of this board is very strong. The people listed have been broad both in style and date.I forgot to mention Prince, just kidding.
ib2010 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Not a "fan", but every now and then Lean Rimes nails some velvet/trumpet like tones that are other worldly.
ZR Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Have to add a few more!Gwen Stefaniold MadonnaStevie NicksKate PiersonCindy WilsonAdeleLisa Loeb...man just too many out there!
velorush Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 In no particular order:More well known:Ann Wilson (Heart, certainly, but absolutely the best Zep covers ever!)Billie HolidayGwen Stefani Ella FitzgeraldChristina Aguilera (it is a shame someone with a voice like that stoops to the pop culture shenanigans of Spears, et. al.)Chaka Kahn (especially the Rufus catalog!)Perhaps a bit more obscure:Esperanza Spalding (contemporary jazz and an amazing bassist)Sarah Vaughn (a favorite, classic jazz)Renée Fleming (opera and pop: without reservation, the most powerful voice on the list)Kim Walker Smith (contemporary Christian with Joplinesque delivery)Dale Bozzio (would there be a Lady Gaga without her?)Leigh Nash (another CC singer with a very unique voice/delivery)
unfun75 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 So basically this thread contains the name of every female who's ever gotten a record deal.
killerteddybear Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 k.d. langLisa Dalbello (she sang a tune on Alex Lifeson's solo album)

The people listed have been broad both in style and date.I forgot to mention Prince, just kidding.Well, it's Aimee Mann... Just puts forth solid album after solid album every three to four years. Kinda like Knopfler.Been a fan since Voices Carry.I've got her live DVD, though I haven't watched it in a while, but the I recall the guitarist swinging a Hamer. My guess is a Newport. I'll have to take a look this weekend.
Ting Ho Dung Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Janis Joplin is the only female singer I've ever listened to I think. I can't think of another off the top of my head.
Crwth145 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Fun topic... Martha Davis / The Motels... I've always thought Sade Adu had a sexy voice (sour notes & all)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYh5pC6ETII

I'll have to take a look this weekend. I was was just out of boot camp and in advanced training when a friend gave me his Voices Carry CD in 85. It was kind of a depressing period and it, along with Queensryche's The Warning helped tremendously.I instantly liked Til Tuesday's new wave style and her voice. I did not abandon her when she moved on and changed directions. She is too melancholy or drab for some, but the quality of her voice is unquestionable. I have always been more about tone than vocal acrobatics. I later discovered my 2 favorite female pop singers are both contralto's in Aimme and Shirley Manson.Great to see others appreciate her too. I think she was listed multiple times before Madonna came up, whom I dislike as a personality but respect her voice.
